New civ linked to new resource

I'd never heard of "batik" before now.

I would wager that you've seen batik, or at least a product that is heavily influenced by batik, without knowing.

Many forms of American tie-dye were influenced due to batik

In Africa, pretty significant art & style movements resulted due to the introduction of batik

South Asians, well, we all know about it there

If you live somewhere else, I don't have enough knowledge to know if batik made its influence there

(By the way, I was never the one to bring up batik as the new resource - just explaining why I think others might find it suitable. Rice was the resource I brought up originally)

It's not entirely unique to Indonesia actually, the other southeast asian nations have them as well. Although it is VERY STRONGLY associated with Indonesia.

UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009. As part of the acknowledgment, UNESCO insisted that Indonesia preserve their heritage.

As for it being too specific, I don't see it as being a problem if it were specific to the civ.

It originated in Java as an art form inspired from cultural and spiritual expressions, which is why people tend to associate it with Indonesia.

But yes, that should be made clear: Other regions in Southeast Asia have their own forms of batik that are distinctly their own and unique

it was me, but i don't know anything about Indonesian culture. Saw an exhibit at an art museum

Of course there's nothing stopping them from making it that specific, but it'd just feel weird. It'd feel weird to me that you'd have every resource be somewhat generic and then have this one super specific thing.

I dunno. It's not like I think it's impossible, but something about it just makes me think it's highly improbable.

It wouldn't be the first unique aspect of a civ. Mongolia is the only one with a unique person. Maya only one with a unit you build immediately. But yeah I still see what you mean, it is just a little too different

It's true in that sense that there would be precedent.

But still... something about it would just feel too unique.

That's not to mention that I would think that a "unique" resource would be one that's played an important role in its history and history outside of Indonesia itself. While Batik does have its history, it's not like coffee, which has influenced the political and cultural development of entire regions or played an important role in Brazil's economy at the turn of the 20th century, for instance, or even rice, which is the staple crop of much of the world, and the introduction of Vietnamese strains of rice into China in the medieval era helped one of China's greatest pre-modern population booms. Heck, even Bison played a role in several native American groups besides the Sioux, and it was also something that's part of the US' culture. But perhaps that's my ignorance about Batik, maybe it does have its world history importance I'm unaware of.

New Resource: Clay, can be improved by quarry.
Indonesia will be able to (in some way) produce pottery (per quarry) once Clay is improved, can be traded.
Just tossing out an idea.

I'm pretty sure that's the whole point, though, a "unique" luxury. Something as tied to a specific civilization as a unique unit would be.

I guess the question in my mind is whether a Batik was a traded commodity to sufficiently justify it as a luxury resource.

I've already stated why I think batik is far-fetched. (Not impossible, mind you. Just far-fetched.) It's just some vaguely cool, but unnecessary, cultural thing, not an iconic and defining element of Indonesian civilization. They may well be setting a precedent by adding a vaguely cool, but unnecessary, cultural thing. But I don't think that seems likely.

And for the record, I was highly dubious about tulips as well. Giving a civ a unique resource based on a silly fad didn't seem that reasonable to me. I was actually glad when that turned out not to be true.

Does anybody else think the Indonesian luxury resource is going to be a spice of some kind? I know "Spices" is already in as a generic resource, and it would be kind of odd to have a generic "Spices" alongside a specific "Nutmeg" or something. But we know now that the resource is Indonesian, and that you have to found cities across the water to get them. Seems like "Spice Islands" would be a good name for that UA.

Sounds likely.

Good point. It's very likely the different continents aspect of the UA ties to the name of the UA and if it's something like Spice Islands then a spice like nutmeg makes a lot of sense
