New Expansion Speculation Thread

If the lady is Eleanor, what charecters her life had that could point to possible Unique Ability or maybe expansion theme?

Austria: I might get some eyerolls over adding Austria as an EU rep, but to me their importance to European history is just too large to overlook. Charles V, Maria Theresa, or Joseph II would all be solid reps. Give them their Hapsburg marriages, and honestly, bringing back the Coffee House might not be a bad idea.

I really hope they won't use Carlos I as an Austrian leader, first because there is nothing called Austria during his reign, he was Emperor of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. And Second he was much more than that: first of all he was the heir of the Catholic Kings.

If the ship is for a berber coast civ, and not ottomans... wouldnt that make ottomans less likely?
Pssst don't say it too loud. Angry Turks around. ;)

But seriously. I am afraid Berber origin of the ship doesn't exclude Ottomans. Northern Africa was a part of the Ottoman Empire and Barbary corsairs also known as Ottoman corsairs were a part of Turkish naval power in the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most notable Ottoman admiral was Heyreddin Barbarossa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayreddin_Barbarossa He was a governor of North Africa.
Look at the Barbarossa galley model:

So we'll see a desert focused Algeria civ (more gold income when trade routes cross desert, desert tiles yield +1 food and +1 production) led by Boumédiène with the ULA to massively reduce loyalty in neighboring cities and a naval UU that has a one-time-per-ship ability to steal 1 population from an enemy coastal city and add it to your nearest city. The combination of naval/desert/neighbors abilities will be hard to bring to fullest potential, but worth it.

She could get a culture bonus of some kind given her influence on the courtly love tradition. That's about all I can think of. It's tricky because while she is awesome, she wasn't really a political leader like most of the other figureheads in the game.

Austria was an Archduchy, and he was Archduke. Welcome to the wonderful world of early-modern composite monarchies... But I agree, he would not be my choice for a specifically Austrian ruler.

Who would?
The Habsburgs ruled a multi-national empire and were also seen as the natural leaders of Germany until Bismark managed to displace them. Austria was just one of their territories.

Courtly love tradition … Valentine's Day release … maybe Firaxis re-balances the next expansion to make love as powerful as war?

I think a ruler from after the separation of the Spanish and Austrian Habsburg lines would be best. Rudolf V/II would be entertaining for the C16th - politically disastrous, but a major patron of Renaissance scholarship, including the occult (Dr Dee was at his court for a time). For C17th Leopold I gives you the anti-Ottoman angle. But probably better to go for C18th. We've already had Maria Theresa, but why not Joseph II, along with Catherine of Russia and Frederick II of Prussia, one of the archetypes of 'enlightened despotism'? The C19th has Franz Joseph I, but beyond living a long time, he is not himself terribly interesting. C20th Austria is not overly-blessed with distinguished leaders. The best known Austrian-born C20th leader is not an attractive option for either Austria or Germany.

I don't think the xebec points to the Ottomans, I think it points to a Barbary coast civ. Ottomans will likely have a land UU as in past games-- and they've got plenty to pick from.

I really don't see them substituting the iconic Janissary (which already has an in-game model) with a ship that every Mediterranean civ used. I mean it's possible the Ottos will have two UUs, but even then I'd go with a cavalry unit over a ship-- and the Ottomans were hardly the most famous users of xebecs, anyways.

Besides, that ship looks rather unrefined, with the black sails and everything, for the majesty of the Ottoman Empire. Methinks we'll see Sayyida al Hurra swashbuckling her way into this expansion, as that's a pirate ship if I've ever seen one.
Why couldn't it be representative of a beefed up/more sophisticated barbarian presence? People say they want more reason to use navy . . .

It may not even be a UU. Maybe it's a new, earlier generic unit in the Naval Raider class.

Or even a barbarian-specific unit. Remember the axe-thrower from Civ V that was introduced in BNW?

I always assumed the axe-thrower was going to be the Pueblo unique unit and when they had to swerve they just added it as it was already made

I personally would be surprised if both the Ottomans & Byzantines will appear in the same pack. While the Ottomans were a glaring omission from the beginning, the Roman city list has no Byzantine cities listed. If we're only getting 8 civs - it's less likely 2 of them will cover the same core area. And they surely want to create new civs. Half the civs were new last time - so if we follow that pattern we might have only 4 returning civs.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the Byzantines were instead represented by an Alt Leader for Rome. At the end of the day - the Byzantines saw themselves as legit Romans. The whole concept of 'Byzantine' didn't exist in their world view. To be honest, maybe they should've gone this route in the beginning instead of splitting up Greece.

The lack of Byzantine cities could be explained by Fireaxis not having made a decision at the time - and the city list for Rome could be altered.

I'd be happy with that.

Picture of the mystery lady was more zoomed in oh the original leak post, so this one is just zoomed out, but if it's real it's clearly some placeholder.

If that ship is a berber xebec, someone on Reddit suggested Queen Kahina as berber leader, it would give an interesting female leader plus a civ to a place that yet has no representation (north africa)

Sayyida Al-Hurrah :)

Berbers have amazing female leaders (in fact, it's reallly difficult to find an Africa based civ which doesn't have at least one good female option, Zulu notwithstanding)
