pre-release info New First Look: Catherine the Great

Also, Catherine doesn't have an alternative persona... I wonder if that means Himiko has one.
surely we don’t know enough about himeko (historically) for her to have a meaningful persona…

in terms of Catherine, we all knew this was coming, so in that sense not too much of a surprise. Despite my concerns about the euro biased leader cast, i’d be lying if catherine wasn’t one of my personal favorite historical figures.

Like others here, a was assuming Catherine would get a persona. I could certainly see Old Fritz with a military persona, with his iconic tricorn, and a "first servant of the state" persona to pair. When Freddy was first leaked, I had even thought a "Anti-Machiavel" persona would be interesting/funny, if not a bit on-the-nose.
Yeah, that's my vision for Friedrich as well. A militaristic (combined with scientific?) commander with a rather stiff honorable moral code on one side, and an enlightened despot focused on public education and learning on the other end.

Wouldn't be too surprised if Prussia or Germany came with a Gymnasium or Military Academy UB to underline this.

Yeah, it's the same for me. I had forgotten how much I loved Catherine in Civ until the First Look tonight. "Obsessed" doesn't quite cover it. The only other leaders I've had this positive of a feeling towards upon reveal were Harriet Tubman and Charlemagne. (and I was unaware to either of them).

I'm already anticipating Frederick's FL because my feelings on him are very similar to the ones I have towards Catherine.

More like Trade Agreement "Meme" persona, and insert "actual historical Elizabeth" persona.
religious war Elizabeth and trade and expansion Elizabeth would be cool to me??

Maybe she will get in one of DLC.

Yeah the part " Increased Resource Capacity in Cities. Increased Gold per Age for each Resource assigned to Cities. Increased Combat Strength for all Units on Plains and Desert tiles." is Aminas ability. Must be a mistake.
oh.....all of a sudden she doesn't look as rounded up anymore...too much tundra 7/10 (I'm joking) that said, maybe when we get more civs with tundra bonuses she will have more homes than just Russia?

My predictions for the final two leaders, in that case, are Frederick and one of the following options:

Akbar the Great
Tokugawa Ieyesu
Mehmed II
Ismail I
Lili’uokalani

I am slightly torn on this one

On one hand I was complaining how Russia once again gets Catherine and is still permanently stuck between Peter and Catherine, within the confines of the 18th century, instead of getting like... anybody else at this point (especially of the middle ages).

On the other hand, I have always liked Catherine the Great - and those are mighty words coming from a Polish country which was annexed primarily because of her actions :D - and for some reason she was my favourite AI leader of civ5 to deal with, so it is nice to see her back, especially as she looks great and has great bonuses... Sigh, okay Firaxis, you win with this particular "cliche" leader, fine, once again I am going to embrace Catherine.

Random fun and somewhat heartwarming historical fact: when Catherine was 14 year old girl she (along with her horrible narcisstic mother) visited the court of Frederic the Great. Frederic immediately felt a) contempt towards her mother and b) respect for her gentle, intelligent and well educated daughter, certainly seeing there his own relationship with his abusive father. Hence he sent her mother to some tertiary table during the feast, whereas he sat teenage Catherine on the most honorable seat next to himself, and spent the feast talking with her about philosophy, art and science. That's also when he got the idea to recommend her for the marriage with the certain equally young crown prince of Russia...

It would be great if some leaders who met each other, or at least lived in the similar times, or had similar themes, had some unique lines for each other. So when Catherine meets Frederick they respect each other both in war and in friendship and refer to the older days...

Well, with leaders decoupled from countries we could see some other Russian leaders in Civ7 later.

So we got our civ/leader that interacts with the Great Works mechanics. And it makes sense for Catherine given her involvement in the Russian Enlightenment and the resulting great works of writing/art/music….

Except there are no great works of writing/art/music in the base game, and we ended up with Catherine the Archeologist :crazyeye:
This is part of what me think Great Works will expand to include art and music. First "works" isn't a terribly good word for relics and artefacts. (Relics and artefacts were at one time works, of course, but once you're naming them with that other word, the focus is on their having survived at all, not on their artistic value). And then there's this. Russia isn't particularly known for archeologists, but Russia is known for great works of art.

I'd love to see Ivan the Terrible or Alexander Nevsky, with a preference for Nevsky.

Trying to light some positivity into it, Russia being so 18th century (with a splash of soviet) on Modern could mean Muscovy on exploration with someone like Ivan the Terrible.

Imperial Russia was always going to be Modern Age. That doesn't mean there won't be an earlier version. Kievan Rus, Muscovy, Novgorod all come to mind.

Especially since the Hermitage is more well known as an art museum, and not for archaeological discoveries.

mine would be alexander ii, freer of serfs.
