He's not wearing a metal breastplate but instead a padded shirt. No armor on this guy, and they tended to wear outlandish clothing and hats.
 
They often wore iron caps under the hat ;-)

The "Bidenhänder-cuts-pike" issue seems to have a true background but it is questionable if it was a common tactics. It seems like there is some glorification and misinterpretation like the image some people have of knights. There were no "shiny armor guys" before the very late middle ages (chain mail instead) but let a kid draw a knight on paper... bingo!

Ah, I see. Very interesting, the comparison to the full-plate issue is helpful too. We had a fair bit of trouble in the Lord of the Mods regarding plate armour...! :D
