New video from Destructoid (May, 14th)

I know a CS uses it's gifted units, but what do they do with your bribes? Do they use it too?

Spoiler :
Definitely a Stele.

Which tops us out at 13 buildings and 9 wonders.

Bring on the Cataphract!

Wait we know all the other new buildings?
If yes then Byzantium has a second UU..YOHOOOO!!!

It's not totally sure yet IMO
If national wonders (currently the only known for sure is the national espionage agency) count into the 13 buildings, than we know all of them
If not, there is one more building left
Having said that, I would take my bets on Byzantium getting a second UU

I wonder if you gift a GP to a CS, will they use it or will it be expended.

If they actually use it, that opens up interesting strategies. Gives a GG or 2 to help them fend off an agressive civ. Give them a GA in the hope they culture bomb a nearby civs resource (actually giving it to you!!). This is good because GG and GA are often the ones you don't know what to do with at some point.

This is not a bad ability all, after burning a few GP on Golden Ages it just isn't worth it so much anymore, a CS ally can be way more valuable then.

And they can use gifted Great Merchants to ally with other city-states! (OK, maybe not, but that would be awesome)

So we have another counter for Greece and Siam, as much as Austria is an anti-Mongolia when it comes to annexing.

And I feel ahte is correct. Just grab Patronage as Sweden, ally with a few city states via quests/Great Merchants, get free GPs in return, gift the GP back or go ally with another CS... It looks powerful on paper, we'll see about it's effectiveness in-game. But it looks that Sweden will be balanced between domination (presumably good UUs) and diplomatic victory, but because of this benefit to allying city states via Great People, it might be great for cultural or science victories (going-tall-wise and food-wise) as well. I like that Sweden's situational UA is countered by its UUs which are almost always useful.

I can imagine a peacefull strategy focussed on GP and CS, but then when you're UU come around you horribly betray your friends and take them down by suprise :satan:

The problem is that before gunpowder you don't have that many GP to shower city states with them, save for a Great Merchant here or there, which is designed to travel to CS's. I think that this UA will really shine in late game of Freedom-based, specialist cities playstyle when you are flooded with Great Artists or the like. Just in time to prepare your ground for a Diplo victory. The UUs are there to help set the base and expand the empire and acquire some puppets and capture luxuries, so you have a bit of gold just in case :crazyeye:

It is good for gameplay and realism that gifting GP comes into play after Dynamite. ;)

It seems everyone is overlooking the +10% gp modifier. Thats huge! Ive had as many as 4 DoFs in a game before! The Swedes will be pushing out GPs as fast as babylon with a good diplomatic player!
You could do early GP farms and then a big push once you tech up to an appropriate unit/unique unit.
Really looking forward to trying them out.:)

Are we so sure that there is no more than 13 Buildings or 27 Units or 9 Wonders? Dennis Shirk did say in the Pax video that there were over 27 new Units. This discrepancy may just be talk, but I've found that whenever something has advertised "over X of something" there is a round number involved, one or two points higher than that mentioned. It just doesn't seem to me that there are very many new buildings being added (not counting Uniques).

Quick question, the celts get a +1 faith for unimproved forest tiles... so can u not build a camp on deer? as it would then be improved??

Well, Sweden wants to be everyone's friend. Unfortunately, civ friends have a tendency to bleed you dry. Sure, you get +10% GP generation for each one, but each one wants a luxury or half your treasury.

Declarations of Friendship aren't available in multiplayer, unfortunately. Does this mean that part of Sweden's UA is useless, or are they changing multiplayer to allow declarations of friendships/denouncements?

Fingers crossed for the latter. I always liked being able to tell my rivals what I thought of them, whether I thought they were trustworthy or to send a warning to everyone else.

Besides, 5 turns is long enough to figure out what general terrain type you're going to be in.

~R~

On a tiny map maybe, but in no way do you have an idea of what the next couple city locations are going to be after a mere 5 turns on a standard of large map. Let's say you pick Goddess of the Hunt because you have a single deer resource near your capital, only to find out after 6 turns that there is a great spot nearby with 4 sources of stone and that there aren't anymore deer around. They need to be able to get a second one, or be allowed to change pantheon every X number of turns.

So... back to the video, did you guys catch how they implied only smart or ugly people, and people who are even nerdier than normal gamers, understand this game?

Hooray for smart & ugly super-nerds!

(Saying this as one of you!)

Nothing is ever 100% certain, but it would be marketing madness to announce 27 units and 13 buildings if there were actually more. If National Intelligence Agency doesn't count as a Wonder, then it's certainly going to be counted as a Building. Dennis did say "over 27 new units," but then he also said "over 9 new civilizations," referring most likely to the fact that Spain was included, even though it's not a new civilization. Similarly, he's probably referring to the fact that there are examples such as Infantry which have been split into two units: you can really only count one of those two as "new." Similarly, you can't count units from the scenarios. If there really were more than 27 new units, then they would surely use the correct number and not keep saying 27.

And yet the nerd in the game was actually the most articulate and least annoying, why doesn't that guy host those shows?
Yes, the two hosts were a useless gay haircuit and a useless pair of boobs... not only do they seem proud of not knowing anything about games that aren't released by Rockstar, but they seem like genuinely annoying, unpleasant people.

The crass clothing product pitch in the middle of the video didn't help.
