Congratulations to Plastic Ducks, One Short Straw and XTeam – winners of the laurels. Commiserations to Phoenix Rising and T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't, the new holders of the wooden spoons.

Two teams won wooden spoons after the discovery of an ambiguity in the Holy Scriptures regarding who they should be awarded to. Besides, we probably all need more teams we can laugh at, so lowest score and slowest finishing date both got spoons.

Some of the victory dates were amazing: 930AD for Plastic Ducks and 1030AD for One Short Straw – Eldine felt compelled to double check those, so unbelievable did it seem that any team could build the UN so early in the game.

And overall, Eldine is very happy with what happened in this game, and has as a result decided she will definitely remain on Earth with her followers (though doubtless many be disappointed to learn that she will be fully clothed, since every team was able to secure all the raw ingredients for her costume).

Indeed, if we ignore the miserable Smurkz who apparently gave up (Eldine thinks you guys should take those smirks off your faces), every team succeeded in meeting every condition. Indeed, much to Eldine’s delight, some teams even exceeded the conditions: You were required to confine your perverted warlike instincts by declaring war on no more than two AIs, but One Short Straw, Gypsy Kings and Unusual Suspects didn’t declare war on anyone. Eldine is truly proud of you.

Then there’s the matter of the four warriors and four great people on the fur. Eldine was especially happy with T’drblurgh (sorry, Eldine still can’t pronounce your name) because every great person they provided was a prophet! A truly fitting tribute for such a noble God! But as for One Short Straw: Which corrupt version of the scriptures were you reading that lead you to supply 4 warriors, 4 maces, 4 great people AND 4 workers, leaving the neighbouring city of Zhou undefended in the process? Has it not occurred to you that Eldine, being a Goddess of peace, does not wish her entry to the world to be polluted by such a vast excess of military might? Oh, and Barley Demons: Personalizing Eldine’s welcome by naming your warriors would have been a nice touch. Would have been if you’d chosen suitably appropriate dignified names for the ceremony. Winston, Billy, Jimbob and Josh do not, by any stretch of the imagination, constitute a dignified set of names. ChokoMisfits was a bit better (Ozbenno, McArine, MightyDwarf (promising) and Jericho Hill). And as for Unusual Suspects: Two things. Firstly, Eldine feels that don’t fear I’ll protect U would be a most excellent and fitting name for a warrior IF YOU SPELT IT PROPERLY. And secondly, what happened to the other warriors? Did they not deserve names? Or did your puny little imaginations give up after you’d come up with one name?

Well done everyone for playing so well! Except Smurkz.

If anyone is interested, here’s the list of victims for the war declarations:

  • Plastic Ducks: Mehmed, Zara Yacob
  • One Short Straw:
  • Xteam:Tokugawa
  • Barley Demons:Justinian
  • Gypsy Kings:
  • Unusual Suspects:
  • Fifth Element: Mehmed
  • ChokoMisfits: Isabella, Mehmed
  • Who Dat?: Mehmed
  • Phoenix Rising: Tokugawa, Saladin
  • T'dr'whatever: Tokugawa
  • Maple Sporks: Isabella, Mehmed

And just a note to say thanks to Eldine's first disciples, Erkon for much advice that helped to inspire the scenario for this GOTM, and to AlanH as usual for all his work organizing everything.

:goodjob: and thanks for putting together this scenario DS! Also love the write-up! And of course congratulations to all the winners and to the ducks for a very impressive finish date :king:

Congratulations to all, both high and low! Smurkz (both of us) are suitably ashamed at our miserable performance and seek to wrest both Wooden Spoons from our nobler comrades, who persevered to victory. With such a diminished company, we felt unworthy to receive Eldine, who deserved nothing less than a multitude to greet her!

Thanks to DS (and Erkon) for the interesting scenario, and to AlanH for his organizational efforts (and patience).

Congratulations to the laurel winners -- some really amazing finishes, I am still trying to absorb everything in their threads.

And thanks to my fellow ChokoMisfits for a fun team experience. As usually happens with the SGOTM, I learned some new things about CIV even after years of playing. The team experience makes these games well worth all the time spent.

Congrats to Plastic Ducks on their excellent date! :worship:

Well played game for OSS as well.

We'll get you next time... :)

Congrats to all the teams who finished and met these strange conditions. Imagine, who would want to cloth a Goddess? :joke:
:hide:

Thanks to DS and Erkon for a real challenge and a lot of fun. :goodjob:
And, as always, to Alan for keeping us all in line. :)

Let me join the chorus of thanks - this was another well-run game and it was an interesting challenge to meet the specific conditions.

Cheers to my Who Dat? teammates - at least we didn't reach my prediction of finishing in zeroth place ... :D

To the final spoiler thread!

Thanks to all for setting up and running this extremely fun game. As a Maple Sporkian it feels kind of good this morning to have lived up to our name!

Congrats to everyone - finishers and non-finishers alike!

Many thanks to the organizers for this very very very fun game!

It tried to give a good chance to everyone but there were obviously better choices to be made - for instance it is now pretty clear that diplomatic is much faster than cultural (but that was up to the players to figure I guess). There was an argument made about the starting location as well... while blindly moving on the Plains Hill was a good option to gain some early hammers, the presence of the silver really broke the scales in its favor. What's more, there was absolutely no way to tell that before moving the settler there. In a game where your competition are other humans, it would be nice if the first turn doesn't give a crutch to some teams - that is either balanced options or the ability to find the differences with a warrior/scout.

Now of course we can't have that for everything (for example, Axe rushing Zara would probably have paid off big time but doing so wasn't easy to decide due to the DoW restrictions and resource requirements) but it just seems a bit unfair for the first turn.

That being said, I am eagerly looking forward (as are probably a lot of players) to the next installment of the SGOTM series and pray the arrival of Civ5 does not push it back! :D

Then there’s the matter of the four warriors and four great people on the fur. Eldine was especially happy with T’drblurgh (sorry, Eldine still can’t pronounce your name) because every great person they provided was a prophet! A truly fitting tribute for such a noble God!

Who would think a noble goddess cares for a bunch of babbling sycophants, one saying "follow the shoe" and the other shouting "follow the gourd" and so on? (And after the Unusual Suspects went to all the trouble of securing Great People from four different walks of life... she doesn't even notice. :( ).

Oh... we named more. Alas, the other names you'd have to read off their tombstones. Eldine called them home early because they were such fine fitting names. Didn't want to take the chance with the others. ;) :p

Thanks for a great game. Learned a lot of stuff about the precise mechanics of UN voting. And had lots of fun!

May I be the first to wonder when sign-ups for SGOTM12 are expected? :mischief:

Congratulations to all who succeeded in preparing the welcoming party and thanks to those who are responsible for thousands of hours wasted, err, spent on playing and discussing this game :)

Many thanks to the admins for this game.

It was a really enjoyable (1st) experience. I hope all teams had a lot of fun with this map & scenario.
The map design was truly appreciated. It was nice to have such a resourceful starting position + close continents.

The point about the silver tile unbalancing the game is fair but only comes into consideration when comparing different games (which is a point of a SGOTM, granted). Still, I hope that no team had its fun ruined solely for settling in place.

BIC.

Congratulations to Plastic Ducks for an incredible effort! :king:

Thanks to my teammates at OSS (except, ofc, that RRRa... person, who is that? :D), for a really fun and educational game. I'm stoked to actually win some kind of medal!

Thanks to DS and Erkon for an excellent scenario. I pretty much agree with what kossin said. There was a lot of effort obviously put into making a variety of approaches competitive, but the SIP disadvantage was a bit much.

Congrats to the laurel winners. We got another one, but certain colours seem to elude us. Anyone who can win a diplo victory by 930AD though deserves that colour! Well done ducks! Very impressive!

Any chance that beakers per turn could be added to the progress charts? Or instead, break out the technology part of the total score, as was done for the wonders score?
