"Why have there been no responses to most of our communiques," asked President Alexa impatiently. It had been a number of weeks. Replies had either come promptly or not at all. A good number had not come at all.
"Maybe they're all lazy," said the Secretary of Defense, Donald Gates.
"No, no," piped up Secretary of State Yoko Watson, "There was a theory put forward recently by various anthropological researchers that jerks are more likely to survive calamity."
They all turned to look at her somewhat curiously. She continued "Essentially, by lacking empathy, it becomes possible to ignore the psychological implications imposed by massive paradigm shifts in the environment, and so to overcome them by retaining a strong sense of willpower."
There was a strange silence in the Presidential Office. At last, Donald spoke up "So, what you're saying is, it's increasingly likely that *******s will survive major catastrophes, and this somehow correlates to the lack of responses?"
Yoko simply shrugged "It's a theory."
"As good as any other," murmured Alexa in reply, before exhaling "Right, lets go over the Naval budget for fiscal year 0013AE."
