NiNES: A Broken Galaxy

Presidential Apartments (no homes were established in Fury)

A group of men sat around a table discussing the future of Fury.

Commander Gordon suggested, "Let us colonize those systems fast and gain manpower to train our excellent divisions and conquer the galaxy?" There were some murmers and mutterings. Before another man rose up wanting the floor to speak. Dr. Holtz was the Division's medical doctor, but he took classes in bussiness and science at Mars University and graduated at the top of his class, people always listen to what he has to say no matter how stupid it sounds.
Dr. Holtz replied, "While that may help us for awhile, but we cannot forget the cost of supporting these armies and recruiting them. I therefore propose that we establish a commercial base on these systems and watch the money flow in." More murmers and muttering, some people were actually nodding and starting to show interest in his words. Next to speak was a citizen, a woman, of Fury that survived with the Furians during the scourge, her historical history was a bit hazy, but she came up from UPS as a financial Director for the Furian System charged with the task of keeping track of what money comes and goes from this system, one of the best the Furians have ever seen, again noone cant dismiss how strikingly beautifull she is too.
Miss Teague mentioned, "Like Dr. Holtz over there," Montioned to the doctor, "I support the idea of establishing industrial and commercial bases in these systems, while getting them for manpower wont work too often due to the fact that there are very few people there and wont contribute much to our forces unless we colonize and to colonize we need money." She sat down as people started to applaud. President Zabriskie, still is General, took the floor as people quieted down and looked at him.
President Zabriskie asked, "Well those in favor of a military style colonizing for manpower.... raise your hands......" He counted then continued, "And those in favor of industrial and commercial growth raise your hands...." He counted again, "Thank you now you may talk while I count the votes." I sat down and had my aide count for me. After a few minutes the counting was done and I stood up again, accepted the paper and quieted the meeting down.
"The vote is 7-6, a close vote and Dr. Holtz and his team has won the vote."
I turned to my Commander and told him, "Have the scout in Altara establish a defensive communication post in the system and await fighter protection."

OOC: I dont have contact with Intergalactic until I get a Defensive Communications Posts established or my scouts return right?

OOC: I dont have contact with Intergalactic until I get a Defensive Communications Posts established or my scouts return right?
Nope. You can talk to them since each "link" in the chain is manned between Fury and Huris. The two scout ships in between are enough to relay the information. It's if you send a scout ship further away without leaving the system behind manned in any way that there will be a radio shadow.

Great Update, story after questions are answered

I vote you have an update ASAP, this NES is really good.:goodjob:

From: Refugees at Sol and Rana (independent of each other)
To: Nekomi
Please, we are desperate down here, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

OOC: A desperate call for help is also sent by me to any lurker out there to please pick up Intergalactic. It has great potential, and I find it really hard to sit on two chairs (i.e. I know the map and the tech tree already, so how could I play them fairly?).

OOC: Not to worry I can conquer Intergalactic soon for you:lol: .

We hope that you choose to ignore Altara, they will be ours, whether through war or peace, we will have Altara. I will just give you one warning, should you choose war, we will go all the way to your home system. If you leave Altara to us we will leave you alone.

Great story and updates. This is rapicly becoming my favorite NES.

Thanks again for the praise. :)
(and to the lurkers who wonder what the fuss is about for this rather standard update, I think a lot of what people find good is in the secret-info PMs ;) Bet that got you curious, huh? Take Intergalactic and you'll find out for yourself... :mischief:)

I vote you have an update ASAP
If I get all orders in early, I might just get the next update up earlier. But I want a chance to participate in some NESes of my own too, and quite frankly this does take some time, so no promises. ;)

... and my sincere appologies to all lurkers who were to late in claiming the prize. I'm happy to announce that Intergalactic has now been claimed. [party]
Though when we next see it, chances are it looks a bit different. I'll let the claimer do the new introductions. :)

Whee, animated story post of great justice!

Will go to plan orders now, since most diplomacy has been done.

Edit:
Spoiler OOC PS to BananaLee :
Since I'm sure you'll peek at any communication I try to send the the Colonial Federation, I should probably refrain from trading any data with them. :p But I'd like to send them a few polite greetings and general reassurances that other factions have survived and whatnot. And then you can appeal to Niklas or Global Nexus to get copies of everything I say.

Spoiler reply to that :
Not only would he peek at that communication. Indeed you would have to rely on him to carry the message for you, so it would be rather hard for him not to peek at it. So really, you shouldn't conduct any diplomacy with Global Nexus, except via BananaLee. :p

119 h to deadline and I already have three sets of orders in. If it continues at this rate then there may just be an early update after all. ;)

The Liberation of Huris- Part One- A Brief History of Huris and the Intergalactic Corporation

The planet Huris had a long and interesting history even before the demise of large-scale human power. Following a surprisingly-fast terraforming after its discovery, Huris was revealed to be an exceptionally fertile and rich planet. Its vast natural resources made it an ideal place for industrial production, which inevitably brought in the large corporations. The largest by far was the Intergalactic Corporation. In the years leading up to the scourge, it outcompeted and took over all of its rivals, to the point where it had the planet in a virtual economic stranglehold. Then, the scourge came.

The Intergalactic Corporation, loathing to close itself away from markets, kept its trade routes open for too long. The scourge made planetfall in a shipment of construction equipment, and destroyed many of the systems controlling the factories and industries that Huris depended upon.

Order collapsed as desperate people raided at the farms. Factories, while still physically functional, lacked control. Local government was mostly destroyed.

The local branch of the corporation, having lost contact with the rest of the body of the Intergalactic Corporation, declared itself to be the successor. Raising a huge militia with a promise of a return to order, infected electrical systems were purged and the scourge was ended. The Corporation, now with unprecedented corporation was ridiculously more powerful than the ragtag ‘government’ assembled by the other survivors as order began to return. The government was overthrown, and the Corporation reigned supreme.

History will perhaps be kinder to the Corporation than contemporary citizens. It united a chaotic planet and helped to create its powerful economy. However, it was an oppressive and totalitarian regime, with an exceedingly small but powerful bureaucratic elite. It was its consistent attempts to crush its ‘drones’ into obedience that would lead to its downfall…

This is still waiting for Intergalactic Corporation to respond.

A) I don't have a map. Where is one?

B) The IG Corporation is soon going to be a defunct organization. I'm not the corporation, I'm its successor.

"Good evening gentlemen. I apologize for convening the Consortium so late, but there are urgent matters we must discuss." This wasnt exactly the truth, there were no urgent matters, but Kozmos simply wanted to be updated on the situation and solve any problems that might arise. Then again those might be considered urgent matters, anyway contradictory or not he wanted to get to business.

The table they were all sitting on was of an odd design. It was shaped like an ancient mesoamerican pyramid, three sides were straight and sharp except the fourth side on the top which was flat. The table could admit 9 individuals on the sides and one on the top of the pyramid which was usually the General Secretary of the Cybran Dominion. The other seven were Commissars of various departments, one Supreme Admiral and one Supreme General. The term commissar was also used in the military while the political position of a commissar was more often called the People's Commissar of <<insert department>>.

"First off I want to know why is our redevelopment proceeding so slowly." Everyone was starring around vacantly, trying to formulate an answer. Kozmos could see figurative gears forming above their heads and turning at an extremely slow pace. Boris finally chose to speak up. Boris was...quite unique, he was basically a brain with a spinal cord suspended in a vat of fluid. "Well the problem is that the Scourge destroyed a great deal of our nanofactories. Redevelopment has been slow as it is difficult and often impossible to repair any other nanofactories we can find. Even then the programs are weird and screwed up. The one we recently repaired couldnt stop churning out stuffed teddy bears. On the plus side we now have 3 warehouses full of cute stuffed teddy bears. Comrade Gordan started out handing them out and the children are pretty happy."

"Hmph yes, we must always think of the children. Why is that you cannot repair them?" Boris floated in his tank for a while and gave the following answer: "We lack the proper hi-tech parts and programs. It would be a lot of easier if any of the Universal Constructors still worked." Crazy Ivan, the People's Commissar of Research & Engineering stood up and activated the holoprojector on the center of the table. It showed the 3-dimensional sketch of a UC.
Spoiler :
UCcomp.jpg

He extended his arms and yelled in his excited crazy scientist voice.: "Behold, the tool of the gods. The Universal Constructor." Kozmos looked at him threateningly "Ivan calm down or I'm going to have you nerve stapled....AGAIN!" Ivan visibly a bit shaken, calmed down and his enthusiasm disappeared. Nonetheless he gathered enough courage to continue "The Universal Constructor is a powerful tool capable of building almost anything. Unlike the simple atom by atom nanotech constructors common today, a UC combines millions upon millions of atoms in a parallel process that could produce materials or mechanisms of unmatched intricacy on a scale currently not possible even with the best nanoscale foundry. Unfortunately we are missing the critical reaction modules. Without them we cant even hope to start it."

Kozmos had a long, disappointed look on his face. "Any good news whatsoever?" Selene responded with a reassuring voice "Things have been relatively quiet for now, which can never be a bad thing. Our scouts are reporting zero contact or new happenings." She was a beautiful black haired woman with electric blue eyes, wearing the tight official leather uniform. Her electric blue eyes provided him with comfort, she probably got them from some kind of a genetic modification. Kozmos was distracted and attracted by her, but managed to look away. He took a quick scan of the table and spotted Admiral Zhukov wanted to say something. He reluctantly looked in his direction and asked "Anything to say Admiral Zhukov?"

"Well actually yes, I would like to discuss our military budget or better said the lack of it." Zhukov annoyed him. He would never stop whining. Kozmos sighed and replied in a bored manner "Admiral we have been over this before. We will allocate more recourses to the military once we got the basic production cycles up and working. As you have heard now we are experiencing some problems, but I'm sure Boris and Ivan will take care of it quickly." The old man was tired of being told the same thing over and over. He unloaded on Boris. "How is this disgusting brain in a jar going to help me?" Boris returned fire "If I still had a body I'd open a can of whoop ass on you!" They continued to exchange insults. Kozmos was too tired to stop them and just watched being slightly amused. Ivan at last intervened which was highly atypical of him. "Settle down you two, we are not here to fight. I will install another holotransmitter instead of Borises chair so we dont have to watch his gross floating brain". Everyone chuckled a bit.

All of sudden a gold-colored robot built into a lounging chair, entered the room. "What the hell is this?" Kozmos asked with a raised voice, intrigued by the robot. Ivan responded "Oh that's a prototype drone I am working on. I call it the Hedonismbot, whose sole purpose is self-gratification." The drone propositioned Kozmos: "I was just going to the Colosseum, anyone wants to join me? Everyone looked at Kozmos. He could feel their piercing eyes begging him to say yes. Tired himself of all this he accepted: "Very well, let all go to the Colossseum."

I have sent great orders of detail to make benefit glorious emergents of providence. :p

More seriously: Niklas, I included stats and map in orders now. Do you want me (and possibly others) to do this, or is it easier referring to a common statlist?

I don't require the stats or maps. I always start out with a copy of last turn's stats and update from that, so I already have them readily available. And for the map, well, I know a lot more than you anyway. ;)

94 h to deadline and I have 4/10 orders. :scan:

The Liberation of Huris- Part 2- Revolution

With the oppressive situation the people lived under, revolution was in retrospect, despite all of the attempts by the IG Corporation to crush it, inevitable. Several times, conspiracies were stomped out, leaders weeded out almost completely. But still, it was inevitable that one plan would be missed, and would get the chance to grow.

It occurred in the 6th year of calm after the scourge. Several large factory cities began simultaneous rebelling. The local company representatives were defeated. In space, defectors from the corporation were beaten back, but managed to capture the Carrier IGCS Orion and its fighter fleet.

Back on Huris, a great offensive was launched against the rebel factories. The elite and loyal IG forces crushed the rebels where they found them, but too many people were joining the uprising.

A deadly blow was dealt when a single rebel, in a suicidal attack, managed to sneak into a board meeting (posing as a security guard) and throw an explosive device. He was killed in his escape attempt a few minutes afterwards, and the Corporation’s board of directors was incinerated. The military took over as the Corporation’s temporary command, but it was helplessly weakened by this point.

The space forces of the corporation, blockaded off the planet, surrendered to the rebellion.

The army, considerably more loyal to the defunct Corporation, refused to surrender. They were gradually and bloodily pushed back, to a final battle at the Company’s monolithic headquarters facility. Over 20 000 people perished in the conflict, but their mission was successful. The Intergalactic Corporation was thoroughly defeated. The ruling elite had either surrendered or died in the fighting.

However, the situation was still delicate. There was no centralized government, and if actions were not taken soon, it would collapse into anarchy once again...

The Liberation of Huris- Part 3- A New Future

At the former Corporate Capital, the leaders of the revolution came to discuss the future of Huris. Word had been sent to the scoutships of the change in government, and it had been accepted. The last vestige of IG control was thus gone.

The ideas of many types of new, fair government were enthusiastically proposed: dictatorship, communism, oligarchy, (all electoral of course) total democracy and even a total free-market ungoverned society, which was rejected due to being seen as a path to another totalitarian corporation.

The area was flooded by representatives, which gave the people of Huris a good idea of how governments would not work. If everyone got their own direct say in things, government would get nowhere. The fewer people in charge, the more efficient the government.

The majority of the people of Huris, no longer wanting to work ‘for the state’ as they had before, rejected communism on that principle. The choices were narrowed down to an elected supreme leader and an elected oligarchy. Opponents of the oligarchy spoke about the effectiveness of a single leader, proponents declared the danger of such concentration of power.

After several weeks of fierce deliberations, a final model for government was designed and set in place.

The population of Huris would be proportionally represented by an elected ‘Senate’. Its purpose is to show the President the opinions and wishes of the people. Members of the Senate could run for the role of President, an incredibly powerful position. The President hears grievances from the representatives in the Senate, and choose to act upon them if he or she wishes to. Technically, his or her power is absolute, save the ability to break several permanent laws enshrined in a constitution (which apply to all humans under the government of Huris). However, a president is answerable to the population in the form of annual elections.

The system is still untested, but so far it is moving smoothly. The Democratic Autarchy of Huris now looks towards a brighter future.
