NOTW XXXV: Life's A Bore (Game Thread)

Day is over. Write-up to follow. PMs at night are allowed, as long as they are only to people who are in the same living/shade class.

Evening Day 12
The sun sank low in the sky, the few remaining sitting in silence. As the last glimmers of light began to fade, the Shades gathered in close. Suddenly, Frozen in Ice jumped up and hurled his spear, right into the stomach of Kennigit. Kennigit grunted and pulled out a sword, which glowed with a sickly orange light and charged Frozen in Ice. Landlubber, however was still seated and was just standing up when he tripped and fell into the path of Kennigit. Kennigit knocked into the actor and fell forward, the spear snapping as it hit the ground. Ravus_Sol ran over and stabbed his cutlass into Kennigit's back. Kennigit tried to stand up, but, the cutlass had penetrated a vertebra, and he couldn't. Finally, he died.
Gingerly, Frozen in Ice walked over to the corpse and picked up the sword, flipping the corpse over with his toe. The sword had begun to lose its glow, but it was still easily recognizable as the famed Nether Blade. There could be no question:
Spoiler :
Kennigit was Rathus Denmora and a Serial Killer!

The remaining members of the town of Sinon were shocked that their great hero had gone bad. Could there be any hope for the town, if Rathus Denmora had turned against them? Regardless, there was an invasion coming, and there was no time left to root out any more threats. The defenses had to be manned.

Two days Later
The Illian and Hippus army marched down out of the pass. They hadn't heard from their agents, and were a little nervous. They came out of the woods and saw only three Sidar standing there.
Auric Ulvin stepped forward. "Is this the best the Sidar nation can put forward to defend itself? I will accept your surrender now."
One of the Sidar from the other side stepped forward and unsheathed a gleaming blade. "I am Rathus Denmora, and your people shall come no further into this country, for it is under my protection."
Auric Ulvin laughed, and replied "So be it. Charge!!!"
He was still laughing when the first of his men hit a mine.. His laugh began to fade, and was gone as his men continued to advance and continued to die. Auric ordered a halt and was about to order his men to make camp, when he heard the sound of a Sidar Marching Song echoing from the mountains behind him. His men broke and ran. Auric, with a small company of his men still in good order, hastily retreated through the pass.

landlubber broke down laughing as soon as Auric was gone, wiping the make-up off his face. "Frozen in Ice, I can't say I've ever played a more enjoyable role."
"Thank you, landlubber, but it couldn't have worked without Remake's singing."
There was a loud explosion, far out in the mountains.
"And that was probably Nictel, exploding the pass, and insuring we will never be bothered again."
And together, the three men returned to the town, with the shades not far behind.

Spoiler :
National Integrity Victory!

Remake was content as a shade. He had seen his land preserved from all the corrupting influences of foreigners.
landlubber soon moved on. It had been an exciting gig, and he'd saved lives with his acting, even if he never too a life.
Nictel soon left too, headed for the capital. His dream of becoming a blacksmith never would be. He had a successful career as a demolitions consultant, but the joys of hammer and anvil never would be his.
The jailer stayed, but was never really able to relax, with a bitter shaded judge always singing in his ear.

And Frozen in Ice, Ranger of Sidar? He stands guard to this day, spear in hand, guard over both the border and the cursed Nether Blade, which lies in a vault deep in the woods, waiting, waiting.

Role PMs will be posted later.
Let the discussion commence!

Did Zack and Skooma ever figure out that it was my PG to see them eliminated?

So it was Kennigit the whole time. Kinda figured it would be though after the way things went at the end (verifying there was a SK who was a shade. Good the Innocents figured it out)

I was extremely annoyed our entire faction got wiped out by a serial killer, and that it was a Shade at that, but guess that's the way it goes. Then again he further weakened his own hopes of victory by doing so though.

Did the Shades (serial killer) count for total strength? And Kennigit had 5 or something higher than that right? Or what was the Strength of all these Innocents otherwise. I would have thought most Innocents would be 1 if weaponless but it never added up (assuming Seon at 1, the other four must've had 9 total strength at least - maybe Zack had too much I guess)

Still a fun and exciting game and the Innocents deserve this victory (plus one of the few Innocent victories we've had in quite a while) so that's a plus. Anyway I'm sure everyone can read through our longish quicktopic eventually. A couple other questions I had I'm sure could wait till later/see explanations on things before jumping to conclusions now. Although I am curious how votes/tiebreakers were broken and some mechanics things - not just all about other folks' roles/decisions.

edit: I think I achieved my personal goal :)

Ritual of Death Role PM
Spoiler :
Welcome to the Ritual of Death Team!

You are here to end the atrocious practice of fading in the Sidar community once and for all. To this end, the Acolyte has devised a Ritual of Death, which has been used in a weak form to eliminate many of the older shades of the town. You have the following abilities, which can be used instead of the ones in your personal PMs.
Banish. Every third day, one of you, instead of using your other abilities can kill a shade, once and for all.
Ritual: Each one of you can work towards completing the full Ritual each night instead of your other abilities. It will take 20 person-nights of work to achieve this objective.
If the Bookie or the Actress is forced to fade, they may continue to work on the Ritual, as long as at least one member of the team is alive. The ritual will rebound and eliminate any members of the Team who are shades if there are no fully living members of the team remaining.

You may of course also choose to atttempt to overpower the town through strength

Skooma Addict hasn't activated his PMs here yet, so I'll be sending this to him over at the .org

I encourage you to include me on any communications you engage in, including QTs.

Please PM me if you have any other questions

Time Victory Designs are tough. I went with a night activity counter, but 20 may have been too high.

Invasion Team PM
Spoiler :
Welcome to team Invasion.
You are here to open the way for the conquest of the Sidar. In order to do this, you must overpower the people of this town (traditional strength victory). To this end, you each have certain tools at your disposal.
The Illian axman cip can intimidate someone out of action each night.
The Lanun farmer King Flevance has killed and will kill again in service of the cause.
The Hippus tailer Earthling can spy around and find items that may be of use.

Beware the mob. If called upon to fade, you cannot do so, as you are not Sidar.

cip's PM capability isn't up yet, hopefully it will be soon.
I encourage you to include me in communications both among yourselves and with others and link me to any QT you use.

Good luck, please PM me with any questions you have.

Ritual of Death QT:http://www.quicktopic.com/44/H/qtqJjfPXRP7

I knew that there was something off about Kennegit...

Hey, I'm up there twice!!

Yeah I messed up. I still blame night 5 though on many things--the night I was roleblocked when I went to kill earthling. And I assumed Sandalphon "being too weak to do what must be done" meant that he wanted to join me.

Should have pressed more when I knew the ritual of death was not the main mafia group based on the people I killed.
Oh well.

Earthling + Link + Flevance = 10 Strength

Zack + Ravus + landlubber + Seon + Shades seem verified as zero according to the Shade QT = 5 Strength + Frozen's strength (unknown for sure yet but I thought 2 or 3?)

Even if the Shades got to count their item's (Kennigit's evil blade, darn it that it gave him so much strength) that is STILL less than 10.

:confused: :sad:

edit: did always appreciate how Kennigit voted Flevance the Cutlass - definitely helped us think of Kennigit as scum on the first lynch there. Of course you all can see the antics/weirdness of how we never found out what the Cutlass really did, wish we had.

edit: Yes, we roleblocked you Kennigit, and were going to roleblock you again if you weren't lynched soon. It was so annoying you just killed us all at the end - we spent the whole game making Flevance as strong/safe as possible and he still got killed (by a Shade!)

At Invasion Highwater mark
Zack=2
Ravus_Sol=1
landlubber=1
Seon=1
Frozen=3
Kennigit=5
Total non-Invader strength=13

By the gods that was lucky! I was completely winging it by the end there. Which isn't good when i ended up with a cutlass that could kill people and wasn't sure if i should try killing someone. With a base strength of 1 it probably would have ended badly :D

So how did King Flevance die?

At Invasion Highwater mark
Zack=2
Ravus_Sol=1
landlubber=1
Seon=1
Frozen=3
Kennigit=5
Total non-Invader strength=13

Ahh so it was Kennigit still counting - well, it is was it is but I was disappointed though. Kennigit was also immune to being mafia/night-killed himself so our faction couldn't do anything much about him. If we'd even known for sure a Shade could still be a serial killer, argh - and then no matter what that would be like 5 strength counting against us...

@Ravus - Kennigit, the serial killer, killed both Flevance and me.

Also - the other questions I was going to ask then - how did Romanichine get voted the Orb and some of the other tiebreakers/extra votes get counted, and how did the whole conversion/Ritual of Death work there? Otherwise it seems like Roman was an Innocent pretending to be a Mafia, even had the other Innocents believing that at the end (as can be seen on our QT too I really believed Roman was full scum at that point too, we were still looking for his other ally like Zack though)

edit - I figured out only at the end that the "Book of Shades" was inaccurate but that's disappointing. Obviously even Innocent Shades like Nictel being able to kill was a surprise.

Oh - and what was this "forge?" I'm a bit surprised that Ravus 2.0 got into the game given the knowledge/spoiler info that Ravus 1.0 had but I guess it's ok, certainly it was fun to have him around rather than an inactive player and he did well.

last edit on this one - don't think our quicktopic had been posted yet so should post that here for anyone curious:

Roleblocking me again would have turned the knife on myself.

Still, I should have won I felt. I just was too vocal--it's no fun being a lurking serial killer. Honestly, if I lurked and got shaded, people would have just gone "oh well, random innocent #4 shaded". Which would had led to an ezpz lmnsqz victory imo and not true to the integrity of the game.

No one was speaking up about how the ritual of death was not the main mafia group; it seemed people thought they were. I should have been more vocal and try to look innocent. And once I actually read the FFH wiki to learn about Sandalphon, I was considering posting in the thread how I "knew" (ie. hoping it was right) you simply choose a path as a great person as per the FFH game.

Which happened to be true.

The thing is, our ritual of Death would have meant all shades were killed… including us. I don't know about the others, but my PG was to get the rest of the ritual team members killed. Were you the one that killed me, Kennigit?

I was utterly amazed at this too. Especially since in several folks role PMs, it mentioned "Invaders." And then we have folks like the vigilante J-Man who could have vig-killed again (we were desperately worried about that and that's why we killed him)

The great people thing is a nice surprise I didn't realize - for the second part of that post.

I don't get exactly how that "must kill" thing worked for Kennigit though- you also didn't kill anyone the night Flevance killed Beefy? Another reason we weren't sure there was a SK (though it turns out we were right all along about roleblocking Kennigit being the answer night 5)

And Takhisis- Flevance killed you. We didn't know who you were other than lurking too much/possibly being dangerous. And for a long time that made us very unsure about the rest of the Ritual of Death - I thought your third ally was the remaining killer. You guys had no kills at all in general right?

I think I already posted on our QT, that I think in retrospect this game had way too many killers/things that could happen by luck. And that's without whatever effect the "conversion" was going to have in the end - but even without that, there were three mafia/killing factions, a kill item (unfortunate it never got known about but if it had that could have quickly led to imbalance/game over) and on the Innocent side a full vigilante plus vigilante Shades. Games with lots of kills can be exciting/crazy but are also chaotic and too much just depends on a lucky kill on someone sometime.

I think just about everything is now up.
The forge was useless, except for ravus_sol's P.O.
Actual Shade abilities:
Commander/General: 2-time protector
Sage: 2-time VC scanner
Bard: talk at night plus two midday voice mechanics
Merchant: Blocker
Engineer: 1-time vig.

No one fading could take actions the night of their fade, primarily because most of them were changing abilities. That night Kennigit couldn't kill, but it didn't count as failing to kill.

The missonaries' ability in each case simply gave them +1 vote for every other person alive following their religion. Except for Skooma, they were neutral. Ritual of Death could only kill shades, and was unlikely to use it. You folks only had one killer, and with shades, lynches could be much slower to remove people. I think on balance, every team, including the innocents, was under-powered compared to a typical game. I may well do a full AAR in the style of a history, including quotes from some of the result PMs later in the week or early next week.

I should've vigged classical on Night 2, the night I got killed. Honestly, I just wasn't paying enough attention to notice the immediate threat from a possible converter early on. It wouldn't have made any difference to the final result, but still, it was a poor decision from me.

Oh well. Thanks for the game Autolycus, good work to the National Integrity people (especially the survivors), and big fat raspberries to whichever wolf team it was that killed me so early on, because 'mason with a vigilante item' is the most interesting role I've had in a while. :p

EDIT: Hey, that isn't the Ritual of Death QT. ;) Also, Skooma's PM isn't up.

edit: Actually Flevance killed you Catharsis, looks like Kennigit got Methos - Kennigit also had days 1 and 3 I guess, cause we know Flevance didn't/forgot orders those nights.

We should also officially nominate that this should be a "prequel" to whichever older NOTW game it was that had a "descendent" of the Sidar with the Netherblade - didn't play in that one myself, but the way this one worked out it sounds like the Ranger Frozen becomes a nice legendary figure in history, passes down the blade and so on ;)

As for the Ritual of Death - I entirely agree their VC was too hard as well, it would seem. So my condolences there. If I'd been on that team and seen we had to have 20 player-nights worth to win, I would've abandoned that goal immediately - probably just used the Shade-kills as often as possible and abilities otherwise (Takhisis' ability would have been really fun to have - I surely would have just used that all the time!) So surprised they didn't do this, especially Zack at the end, where I can't see Zack thinking he was going to win the original VC so why not kill some Shades.

Above all though I do want to thank Autolycus for a very diligent and impressive job here - seemed to be no problems with the course of running the game which was great. Setup was interesting and it did play out to a razor-thin finish even if by coincidence/not how people expected it would go.

The problem was that much less, and if they don't die quickly, they can bee-line and win. If they all survived for 7 days, they won if they were always doing ritual. If they had two every night doing ritual, they won in ten days. Zack was relatively inactive at the beginning, and was using his block at the end.

Well given the rest of the game though I think that would have been fair. Living for 7 nights with no members of their faction dying would have been worthy of victory - if it was at like 16 total they still would need six nights and that seems fair. Maybe Shades being able to work on it is a little off if they'd gotten lucky that way and just had a Shade live for a whole 10/11 days, but in that case I'd still reduce the overall number and just make Shades count for only 1/2 a point towards the Ritual or something.

Because given how kills/etc... worked in this game, there was almost no chance they'd make it that far by pure luck, so either it would be on the fault of other teams for dying (Innocents killing/lynching each other, or if our team or the SK was eliminated early, it's only fair the Ritual faction would be doing better) or by excellent play by the ritual team.

More specifically, it seems like they would have had more success ignoring that route of victory entirely - as they could still win victory otherwise there's little incentive to go for the Ritual. Takhisis for instance would certainly be far better off never working on the Ritual - if he'd lived 7 or 8 nights on the Ritual, sure, that's cool, but if he lived that long using his ability and had like 8 strength that would have been even better...

Gotta say classical and Domination had by far the worst luck/most horrible coincidence of all so sorry that happened. Never fun to not have a teammate at the start and they didn't make it to having any others I guess (really thought classical could have converted someone lurking around at the end but I guess not)
