Indonesian marines arrive in Southern India

Colombo, Republic of Indonesia- With a majority of Indian troops defending in China, the Indonesian forces felt the need to support the outnumbered Japanese by instigating a second front. With the Indonesian fleet covering for the transport ships, the TNI-Sukarno landed on Ceylon, hoping to engage the Indian Presidential Bodyguard units. Instead, the Presidential Bodyguard opted to defend the Western Air Command from any additional attacks, a move that proved justified when the TNI-Suharto landed on the subcontinent as well. Indonesian generals were slightly disappointed that the Indians withdrew, as they had to encircle them with a daring landing, but overall expressed optimism, due to the heartland of India laying naked to their armies while the majority of Indian forces still remains occupied in China. Many Indians are openly calling for a withdrawal from China in order to defend the homeland, despite the fact that it would cause a hostile foreign power to border India. Still, while there is a mood of despair in the occupied cities, most Indians believe that the military should be able to turn back this invasion in the coming winter.

Chinese fighters prepare to take off on another mission

Chongqing, The People's Republic of China- With the arrival of Chinese and Indian forces, internationally most people suspected that this year would see an all out brutal war between the allied and Japanese troops. The Chinese and Indian troops availed themselves of the natural defenses in the region, while the Japanese focused on creating more man-made defensive lines. Each side consistently tried to bait the other into taking a ground assault, and only limited fire exchange occurred on the ground, with neither side willing to begin an offensive. It would be in the skies that the war took place, where veteran Chinese pilots would help tip the scales. With Indian planes fighting by the Chinese side, the numbers were evened and the Chinese were eventually able to gain air superiority, which they then used to bomb Japanese positions. While there was some success with the Chinese bombing runs, and the PLAF has established itself as the dominant force in the region, the Japanese never decided to counterattack, instead preferring to continue to build up their defenses. At this point in time, both sides are preparing for what promises to be a harsh winter as Japan contends with the dominant Chinese air force, while the Chinese are watching with nervous anticipation as their Indian allies likely prepare to leave the region.

RUSSIA ON THE RISE?

Russian-soldiers-012.jpg

Russian troops advance through Central Asia

Astana, Coalition for the National Unity of Russia- After two years of Soviet mismanagement, it at least seems that Russia is recovering. Upon the Russian commitment to furthering the war with China, Japan gladly handed over Vladivostok, allowing for the total liberation of Russia proper. With Chinese troops further moving east, Russia was emboldened to bring their offensive into Kazakhstan, where they have quickly seized most of the north and west, and have helped crush a nascent Kazakh rebellion. At this point, it seems that Kyrgyzstan is within reach of Russian armies, which would do well to bolster prestige internationally, and though the current government is supported, there is pressure to not escalate the war into China proper, as many look to the West with worry as the European Concordat grows stronger and stronger, not to mention the coming due date of Russian debt. For now though, the mood in Moscow is that of optimism, and many are hopeful that Russia can now get back to its old, powerful self.

Concordat challenged in Bulgaria, Romania
Sofia, European Concordat

The push to bring the rest of the Europe to be within the Concordat at last suffered its first significant hiccups this winter. European troops first embarked on the conquest of Bulgaria Though the Bulgarian capital was close to the border, the Bulgarians would mass their troops on the border in an effort to hold the Concordat forces. In the end, it would not be mobility, but rather numbers that would break through the Bulgarian lines and eventually capture Sofia. However, Romania would provide much more of a challenge, giving Eurosquadron its first real challenge since the Belarusian War. Though the Romanians were unable to shoot many jets down, many missions had to be cut short. Romanian equipment and training proved to be a match for the Europeans, and their defensive lines were able to hold of Concordat armor for some time, but when the ERRF at last achieved a breakthrough, the fortunes of the Romanians at last crumbled, though pockets of resistance continued throughout the winter. At this point, Moldova and Greece have actively mobilized their troops for an all out defense, and a Greek general has in fact seized control of the presidency by declaring a state of emergency. The Ukrainian, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and British governments have similarly increased their preparations, but are more confident that they will be able to resist a Concordat attack, if one is to come at all. Meanwhile on the home front, new elections have been called for Winter of 2037, and many are anticipating the Democratic Movement will even further suffocate their political competition.

Djibouti conquered
Djibouti, Nyanza

With the retooling of their air force, Nyanza embarked to add one of the few remaining independent countries in the region to their empire. Djibouti barely had time to mobilize their army before they were surrendering, and Nyanza quickly secured the nation, fearful of potential Somali retaliation. At this point, only Somalia remains independent in East Africa, and with rumors of a Somali patriot behind the assassination of the Nyanzan president, it seems that Nyanza has its perfect excuse for its next conquest.

Progressives dominate US elections!
New York, United States of America

There was a palpable excitement among the American people as they cast their first votes in twenty years on the heels of their newfound democracy. With a new popular vote system, the people now directly elect the American president and government and for their first post-dictatorship government, they chose the Progressive Party to be their standard bearers. Energized by the goodwill given to the movement by their role in the rebellion that would bring down the American dictatorship, the Progressives captured 56% of the vote, building support for a leftist, democratic nation. The Christian Socialist Union ended up capturing 30% of the vote, and party leaders spoke of openly cooperating with the Progressives in order to create a country where the gifts of God could be given to all. The American Worker’s Party ended up capturing only 1% of the vote, as a new, broad coalition called the Centrist party ended up capturing 13% of the vote, a surprising turn out for what people mostly considered a long shot. At the inauguration, a speech watched by nearly every American, the president called for the end of the hatred and discord between Americans, and called for them to work for a more equal, and therefore more prosperous, America. The President also spoke about the need for a safe, peaceful world, and proposed the idea of reparation of American citizens from the occupied zone into America proper. However, behind these peaceful words, the United States Air Force is being built up once more to challenge the Mexicans, and many observers note that despite the peaceful rhetoric of the American president, they are now well-poised to strike back against the Mexican occupiers.

Argentine troops mop up Chile
Santiago, Empire of Argentina

Despite some initial hiccups in their second invasion, Argentina at last was able to show why their Tigers are considered the best troops in the world. With a junior level Argentine officer noticing the opportunity to outflank the Chilean troops through a narrow passage, some of its infantry were sent through and able to open a key Chilean mountain pass to Argentine armor. Santiago was soon assaulted, and when it fell, the Chilean resistance collapsed. Argentine troops were able to sweep over the rest of the country in one last push, and the scattered remains of the Chilean government officially surrendered. Emperor Ignacio at last has his vindication, and some media outlets have now been less sarcastic when calling him “The Napoleon of Argentina”. With all of South America under his boot heel, there are some disturbing rumors coming out of Buenos Aires and the research into nuclear technology, setting off some fears that the Emperor may be looking to make a bang on the world stage.

Ivory Coast first conquest of new President Martin
Yamoussoukro, Federal Democratic Republic of West Africa

With growing dissent against sitting President Bahari, both in the occupied regions and in West Africa proper, President Bahari’s political opponents have been able to force the President to call snap elections, where he lost to Modupe Martin, who portrayed herself as a coalition builder. Her Unity Party succeeded in gaining the support of many Nigerians, but many are wondering if it was all for political talk as soon after she took office, President Martin ordered a full scale invasion of the Ivory Coast, conquering the country after some difficulty. Still, President Martin still holds the support of many in West Africa, but as was seen with President Bahari, public support can be lost as quickly as it is won.

Brazil finishes conquest of Peru
Lima, Empire of Brazil

Desperate to finish the war before the winter conditions would kick in for the Andes, Brazilian generals launched desperate assaults. Using artillery and airpower, this season the Brazilians were much more successful in destroying certain chokepoints, and when that failed, the generals were more than willing to send in the infantry. Once Lima fell, the rest of the Peruvian force surrendered in short order. Now, though the Brazilians were successful, it remains to be seen what Argentina will do, now that it has run out of neutral countries to conquer. Many in Brazil fear that with the expansionist nature of the Argentine regime, the current situation will not last for long.

Republic of Congo defeated
Brazzaville, African Federation

The African Federation continued on its trend as the strongest power on the African continent, this time setting its sights upon one of the stronger minor nations on the continent. While not as powerful as its neighbor, the Republic of Congo boasted a modern military force, allowing it to resist the initial assault by the African 1st Army and its carrier support. The 1st Army was outnumbered, and though its training allowed it to fend off the Congolese, it would not be until the arrival of the 2nd Army from Zimbabwe that the 1st Army was able to finish the conquest of the region. Despite the victories on the battlefield though, dissent continues to rise in the occupied territories, and security advisors are demanding a stronger presence in Angola and in Gabon.

Turn 8 is in the books folks! Very excited about the progress this world has made :)

I am going to do a trial period of allowing story bonuses for the next few turns. If you have a story you'd like to share with this world, I will give you 1, maybe 2% stability bonus :) This trial should last 3-4 turns, and we can see how it goes! :)

No stability for kicking over a strong minor country? :(

You would have if you had a few more MPs for your occupied territories, so it resulted in breaking even

Meanwhile in Jakarta:

"So the enemy outnumbered the Japanese like 3-1?"
"Yeah"
"Why didn't they attack?"
"Well I hear they're playing the long game"
"What sort of long game?"
"We've taken to calling it the Hawaiian holiday"
"Oh right"

Excellent update Nuka!

Gonna call my president Bernard Sandies. Because if I can have Trump why not Bernie?

THIS TIME FOR AFRICA!

Federation troops resting after repulsing a West African counterattack

Lagos, African Federation-With the African Federation producing evidence that seemed as if it could possibly be conclusive that the FDWRA had armed Gabon against the AF, the people of the AF demanded swift retribution for the loss of their soldiers. Without a formal declaration of war, the supercarriers African 1st Naval Task Force quickly destroyed the tiny GGLN fleet, their cruisers and destroyers completely unable to fight back. With complete control over the coast confirmed, the African First and Second Armies initiated their assault upon West Africa. The Second Army, relying on speed and completely lacking infantry, attempted to outmaneuver the West African troops to destroy their air force, but the GGLA 1st Division had more than enough time to set up defenses and easily repulsed the 2nd Army. However, the GGLA 1st Division could not pursue the enemy, as the Federation’s veteran First Army ran wild in Southern Nigeria, and the GGLA 2nd Division was not a match for it. Instead, the West African troops concentrated their operational power in the interior, where the GGLA 1st Division was in its natural element and the WAAF still had air superiority. Still, African Federation troops are confident, and they have good reason to be. The 118th Tactical Wing has been brought into the field, and the recently formed Third Army should be able to deploy to West Africa sometime in Spring. Meanwhile, the FDWRA, while still possessing some significant military assets, have a significant debt issue and its economy has been significantly impacted by the Federation’s victories in the field. Already there is significant dissent building against the Martin presidency, and many feel that a coup is increasingly likely, especially if the West Africans cannot mount a significant counter-attack. Perhaps West Africa’s best hope is Nyanza, and with South Africa for the most part undefended, Nyanzan troops could completely alter the fortunes of the Federation in this war.

A NEW HOPE?

Indian troops on the offensive

Beijing, The People's Republic of China- With the Indonesian forces running rampant in India, many expected that the Chinese would be left to fend for themselves, almost assuring their demise. However, ignoring pressures both from the military and the electorate, Indian President Misra opted for one last offensive into China. The 1st Gorkha Rifles, perhaps now the strongest ground force in the world, launched a probing attack at the Japanese Aka-Gun, hoping to divert Midori-Gun south in an effort to bolster the defenses. Instead, the Japanese opted for a fighting retreat upon a broad front towards Shanghai, ruining plans for an encirclement of the Japanese troops. Despite the fighting prowess of the Gorkha Rifles on the ground, the Japanese Alpha Wing had, with significant reinforcements, taken control of the skies. The 1st Gokhra Rifles would fight through the rubble of the various Chinese cities, and Japanese troops, ever fearful of a flank, would hold for a bit before retreating. The secondary Chinese and Indian armies did not have enough combat strength to break through Midori-Gun, and with the Japanese retreating towards Shanghai, the Chinese troops instead sought to liberate their chained cities. The 28th Army Group went north, freeing Beijing and Manchuria, while the 42nd Army Group focused on liberating Qingdao and then swinging south to support the Indian offensive towards Shanghai, which at this point is one of the few strongholds of Japanese power in China. However, despite this major reversal in China, the situation has become incredibly dire in India, where Indonesian troops have run rampant across the subcontinent. With only the Presidential Bodyguard (which took up Delhi as their center of defense) and a handful of mines to stop the Indonesians, much of the subcontinent has fallen under their control. Not only has significant progress been made towards Delhi, but Bangladesh and Bhutan have fallen to Indonesian control, and Nepal is seriously threatened. While the Indian Air Force had relocated to China for safety, the lack of defense for India has outraged her people and generals, and there are signs that there may be a military or popular uprising soon.

BRAZIL HAS THE BOMB

pakistani-missile.jpg

The first successful nuclear test of the modern era

Perhaps worried about the recent Argentine decision to invest in nuclear weaponry, the Empire of Brazil has decided to finance its own ambitions. Late this winter, Brazil announced the first successful nuclear test since the 2017 financial collapse. Most experts believe that Brazil is out of reach of ICBMs, and will instead rely mostly on bomber craft or nuclear submarines, but most indicate that Brazil has gained a significant tactical advantage in South America, one that could easily dominate countries like Venezuela, Colombia, and even Argentina. In Buenos Aires, this has given Argentine scientists a new kick to ensure they can develop their bomb faster, though they will not have nuclear weapons for at least six months. Whether Brazil presses its advantage now or keeps to his on-again, off-again pact with Argentina remains anyone’s guess.

Stability and order brought to Moldavia
Siret, European Concordat

Despite the ongoing preparation, Moldavia’s military forces were desperately ill-equipped to force back any Concordat assault. With Concordat bombers and artillery dominating the battlefield, many Moldavian conscripts would be quick to flee the battlefield. Even cooperation with local crime could not slow the Concordat offensive, and Moldavia was forced to surrender, an action that many feel will significantly improve the situation in the country. The victory in Moldavia once again boosted Jean Valerian’s ridiculous poll numbers, and the president will enter this year with an astonishing 88% of popular support. However, outside of the Concordat, Valerian has been cast as a modern Hitler or Napoleon, and now Ukraine more than ever has prepared itself for the coming invasion, and some believe that Ukraine may align itself with Russia in order to stave off a potential European invasion.

Somali Pirate King killed in gunbattle with Nyanzan troops
Mogadishu, Nyanza

Following the alleged assault on the Nyanzan president by a Somali gunman, Nyanzan troops executed a brutal attack upon Somalia. Pirates, Islamists, government forces, and other warlord troops would fight brutal street battles against Nyanzan troops, who were well supported by their air force. After the fall of Mogadishu, the government of Somalia collapsed, and further up the coast, a renegade group declared a Pirate Kingdom of Somalia, but in the end, Nyanzan troops proved to be more than a match for the Somalis, and the nation was annexed into Nyanza.

Central Asia brought to heel
Bishkek, The Coalition for the National Unity of Russia

Despite the heating up of the war in the Indian and Eastern theaters, it seems for the Russians the war may be at an end. Upon taking the last of the Kazakhstani and Kyrgyz hold outs, the Russian military ended its advance east. Some in Russia wonder about the status of the government, and whether elections will be held, while others are concerned that the Russian Air Force has made landing in Shanghai, instead of returning to Western Russia where the Europeans are becoming more threatening by the month. Still, for some nationalists, this has been a great reversal for the Motherland, and there is hope that Russia may continue to rise in this cutthroat world.
