We had a UN council here for a while. School, tests, family visiting (my two brothers came back from college and Korea), and all that stuff made me forget about our UN group. Anyone want to restart it? Or should we just move on? I'll gladly participate if I have the time. I was just really busy and then forgot about it until I noticed that my sig said that I was the Russian Ambassador.

I'm up for it, was kind of fun, if someone can fish out where we left off, might be well worth it.

I was the Palestinian leader. I think there's still a fair few issues to thrash out:)

Imight have enough time to represent french polynesia... ;)

Cool. I suppose we'll wait and see if enough come back. Of course, I'll be Russia again.

BTW- Anyone who wants to join who wasn't here last time is obviously welcome to join. Just pick a nation that's not been picked (look at the old UN thread if you want to see which nations were taken) and don't care about your actual home nation (I'm American, for example but representing Russia).

Any particular country?

And where exactly are you talking about? Would be nice to have a place where it wouldn't drop so quickly into obscurity.

Most OT posters visits Forum Games about once a fortnight, so I guess the sign up should take place in OT and then the game takes place in FG.

Oh. Sounds good.

I'd like to do it again however I think we should simply have a topic and whomever steps in can represent a country on that particular topic. I think it will stay fresh and we can move on to more topics.

I'm not sure getting caught up in the election process of a Sec. General is really necessary.

:agree:
The Secretary General is pretty much a useless figurehead in real life anyway. No reason he should be given a special role here.

As for the country, I'll represent India thanks.

Ok. So do we decide a country on the particular topic or do we stay as teh same nation all the time?

I don't think it's necessary to be the same nation all the time. In fact, I think it would be useful to act as a different country. That way you'll be more empathic with many different views.

The key to me is not even countries so much as posing a problem and coming to conclusions that seem reasonable.

We've got about half of our old group back. 7 of us.

Perhaps about nations, we switch nations after every topic debate.

I really do enjoy representing nations though. It gives us a nice point of reference and is kinda fun trying to seriously act like your nation. Much more interesting than just random people pointlessly discussing topics (like most of the OT).

Yeah I'm all for current topics, especially atm, I think the UK and Iran have something to talk about, and I have no problem with switching govs either, maybe monthly though as most issues take a while to thrash out. Or weekly but people could defer if they still have something to discuss and don't want to hand over the reigns yet, by a simple vote, seconded carried type motion maybe?

Secretary general, just arbitrates in matters of protocol, but otherwise is pretty much not given any special powers(As you say an impartial fairly powerless figurehead) A bit like the speaker in the house of commons.

Do we keep our old Constitution (the old proposals)? If we do, I'll gladly write up a compilation of all the votes and who voted for what. I suppose then that I'll make an archives thread in the "forum games" area to allow us to keep track.

Can we have a quick review of protocals and procedures? I'm new to the game...!

Ok. If you want, you can review the old thread (warning-lots of posts).

As a general overview (i might be missing stuff):

We will decide on a topic. (it used to be the sec. general but we might be eliminating him)
We will have a specified length of time to debate said topic.
Once this period is over, we vote and a majority rule solidifies the legislation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also various rules and legislations-

While debating/voting you must clearly identify your country as a heading or closing

You can call for a temporary suspension of voting and/or debating rights. if a majority agrees, a vote is held. if a 2/3 majority rules, the offending nation will have the punishment dealt out.

And i'll look for more later (church)
