Official announcement: Hot off the presses. Next Civ game in development!!!!!!!

I’ve recently done kind of a memory lane replay of all the older civs.

Civ3 wifh the Flintlock patch and a few tweaks is the best in the series. It’s definitly the one where the AI can actually compete with you the most, epecially in fighting wars.
But Civ2 with the Test of Time, and the Test of Time Project Patch created five or so years ago by @TheNamelessOne, gives amazing options for scenario and mod making just not possible in Civ3 - like scripted events, and up to four stacked and separate maps.

Yes this is all true, but unfortunately even in (Civ 2) TOTPP until now there is no fix for the defending bug of animated sprites and even more worse, there is no Lua enmovement trigger for different movement sounds of units - and only a single "clack, clack, clack sound" for the movement of all kind of units in the game, unfortunately lets Civ 2 ToT (even with the otherwise in my eyes great TOTPP) really perform very outdated today.

That would definitly be a close second for me

Though VERY few custom-made scenarios and mods actually use custom sprites and assume the player will turn them off. This has become the assumed norm in most of the community.

It is no wonder that no more animated units were created for Civ 2 ToT with all those never solved big shortcomings of Civ 2 ToT. I made several working animated units for Civ 2 ToT by converting Civ 3 units and even a mod with light animated Civ 2 ToT units long before TOTPP even did appear. They can be found here and here. I stopped creating animated units for Civ 2 ToT long ago exactly due to these shortcomings. Ignoring these existing big shortcomings and playing Civ2ToT in the unfortunately completely outdated "clack-clack-clack-style" is the only option left, as nobody (even not TheNamelessOne) found a solution to overcome these existing massive shortcomings. This is really a pity, as Civ 2ToT, especially with TOTPP has all those interesting great options you listed in an earlier post.

Are we all agreed this is Civ7 and not some kind of Civ Rev or other crappy spin-off with monetization and console users in mind?
They'll get monetization from my cold, dead, hands (and even then, not if I have a good inheritance lawyer). 💀

It's come to the point that, the rare time I play Original, Extended Original, Sci-Fi Game, Fantasy Game, or Midgard in ToT (which is not common, nowadays, but...), the default animations are jarring and seem out of place.

It could be a free-to-play pay-to-win first-person online shooter where you also pay to purchase the latest 'Gilgamesh' and 'Elizabeth I' skins
We all know they have to innovate; it'll be a new take on Civ, turn based begone for some new, modern system, like with Final Fantasy 16 - action strategy game. :P

Has it? I only know the tweet that said the next game in the series is in the works
Well everybody in the press mention Civ7. Even here, considering the speculation on when exactly it (Civ7) could be released, not to mention the fact that the odds point out to a new numbered iteration in the franchise... some people even hoped it (Civ7) for this year.

As if console players were responsible for design changes on games... c'mon

I agree with the crappy spin-off (partially) and monetization but what's the problem of newer games having UI created also for consoles???

Let's not forget that the first eve Civ was also released for SNES. :p

Civ 6 came out for mobile phones way before any video game console. I'd say tailoring to that market is worse.

Eh, consoles have a few problems.

1. Getting patches approved is a slow process, so PC players have to wait longer for fixes or else go without cross play for a time.
2. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo sometimes censor content to protect their own brands.
3. Games developed for console first are often limited in scope, content, features, or customizability because of the limitations of the consoles.
4. Games developed for consoles first often have a less-than-great PC interface.
5. In all cases, supporting more platforms requires more development resources.

All of those problems can be overcome, of course, but we've all seen games that didn't work out so well because they ran into one or more of those problems. Hopefully, Firaxis is on top of things and 2K is willing to commit the additional resources required to make everything work.

The second. Civ2 was. I didn't play the SNES version, and I only had access to an SNES on my youngest brother's unit when I lived with my father, and my first copy of Civ2 was with my first PC (a Windown 95 machine) in my first apartment around, so...

Yes, but it is still only speculation, albeit it seems more than likely. There has been no "official" statement from FXS concerning what the next Civ game will be. AFAIK there has only been a couple mentions - a short comment on Civ's Twitter account and in a press release statement from Heather Hazen when she was promoted to Studio Head - both on the same day Feb. 17th.

Heather Hazen said:
I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio's storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise.
