Just put "Addictive Forum Games" as name.

Awkward, but still technically correct.

One more update.... one more update!!

A collection of forum-based roleplay, strategy and world-building games.

Yep, that looks like a winner.

I basically disappeared from the NES forum about a year and a half ago when I left for basic training and such. My participation declined in general the preceding year due to college and stuff. But when I left these were the feelings that still predominated the NES forum. I feel out of the loop. :(

Things change brah

They're two different games and genres.

The end.

Thread over.

haha, oh August.

I'm not complaining, just reminiscing. My positions regarding the forum are relevant to early 2014, since I still remember the forum as it was back then, and clearly I have a lot to pick up on.

edit: And that post you quoted is almost 4 years old.

The sub-heading has been changed. We can change it again if needed or if we want to refine it in any way.

That is excellent. Now the forum communicates better what it's about.

Are we allowed to brainstorm names at all here?

**

With the new forum subtitle, I think we have more freedom deciding what the name of the forum could be. The title can be more evocative and less precise as what it's concretely about is *right there* - the "snappy title, descriptive subtitle" is proper here.

Still, I've ventured through thesaurus.com for synonyms. You may pick apart as you like. I'm posting these as a bunch because I'm not hellbent of any of them. They're meant to be inspiration, tools for you to deconstruct and reassemble.

Roleplaying Imaginary Communities
Roleplaying Imaginary Societies

^^ These cover the activity done in the forum (roleplaying communities/societies can refer to organizations rather than nations, something that is done every once in a while, and roleplaying may cover the very act of gaming - this forum is about: Roleplaying Imaginary Communities), it is slightly awkward grammatically, but it covers it. I listed it because of the middle vocal.

Roleplaying Imaginary Worlds

^^ Broadens the scope to worlds. This is also slightly awkward and perhaps less accurately, but I think it's pretty evocative, don't you?

Playing Imaginary History
Collection of Imaginary Realms
Allowing an "of" word broadens the palette quite a bit. Forum of Imaginary Worlds.

I have to say, I like the Imaginary monicker, similar to how "Fantasy Football League" doesn't actually imply fantasy, but imply the imagination, but without the problem of "Fantasy History" implying that it's all about the fantasy genre.

Alternate Realms Roleplaying
^^ Less concrete when it comes to alt-history and historical starts but it *does* cover it.
EDIT: Actually thinking about it, this name does kinda suck in particular imo, that's what happens when you brainstorm I guess.

Imaginary Worlds Community
"We are a community that makes imaginary worlds"
Imaginary Worlds Games
"We are a community that plays games based in imaginary worlds"
Imaginary Worlds Forum
"We are a forum in which imaginary worlds are created and developed"

Dunno.

However, I think that RPG in some form can work for the forum, even for games that are heavily competetive with hard, stat-based rules - RPGs vary after all between qualitative, creative pen & paper and hard-number turn based envoys.

Land of the Munchkins? :mischief:

With 38 votes done, I think that this encompasses a good majority of the community, and though I am aware that the poll will not close for 2 more weeks, we should start addressing the fact that some No votes have indicated that they would support a name that would include the name IOT, while other No votes have said they would prefer a name that more accurately reflected what the community does. I think at this point we need to start discussing the pros and cons of both renames, and how they might affect the Forum, and what renames in particular that we like

The rename either way will positively affect the fact that it will unite both of the communities in both name and spirit.

Some pros of keeping the NES and IOT name:

+Emotional attachment to the name
+Helps preserve both of our cultures
+Not too much of a radical change
+More equality for the two sides

Cons of keeping the NES and IOT name:

-Still makes for a confusing name for newcomers
-Feelings of bitterness over the continued existence of the de facto dead NES forum

Pros of going with a completely different name:

+Much better for community outreach, both on CFC and off site
+Less bitterness of NES remaining on
+Gives us a completely new moniker to rally around

Cons of going with a completely different name:

-Both communities may feel disenfranchised
-Loss of cultural heritage
-A more radical shift of name

-------

I'll leave you free to add/debate your own pros/cons

Unfortunately, all the alternatives given for a new name aren't exactly exciting. At this rate, if it'd happen, I'd vote for Republic Ontopicum, because it sounds nice and it harkens back to the past.

I would heartily vote against anything that's not a simple, easily understood name.

I'd actually argue that is incorrect, and that in fact it is even worse than with the NESIOT name.

The issue people have with the NESIOT name, IE having "2" NES forums, but only "1" IOT forum, even if the second NES forum is dead (though while we wait has had a little bit more traction recently, just thought that should be pointed out, doesn't really change the fact that there really aren't any active games there right now).

But the complete rename STILL leaves us with a remaining NES forum, but now there is no IOT forum. Where the NESIOT name feels like the two communities coming together, the complete rename somewhat feels like IOT is being killed off, while NES, even though its forum is pretty much inactive, It is still there.

I'm not sure if the rest of the "I'm ok with a rename so long as IOT is still in the name" group agrees with me on this, but this is probably my biggest aversion to a completely new name, I'm partial to IOT because of the cultural heritage, and I really don't want to lose IOT either because of that.

Solution: Archive the NES forum. Moving WWW to this forum since it's the only thread that ever gets posted on over there anyways. And since a NES technically never dies, move games over here too as needed at the request of mods. Assuming any of them ever see the light of day again anyways.

Also recognize that it's still just an online game forum and in the grand scheme of things we're all just being silly over a few words and none of this is necessary but if it's going to happen we might as well get it over with.
