OFFTOPIC - League of Legends

Still waiting to try out Anivia. Sounds like a fun character, but also a difficult one to use properly. Seems I missed her being free by a few days. Not that my assessment of any character I played in my first days was a fitting one.

Yeah, she eats creeps VERY nicely (letting you gain levels/gold to turn around a game you are losing), and her buff can make all the difference when both teams collide in a 5v5. But sadly I haven't found a good way to make her do or take enough damage herself to contribute more than the buff and a few Q tosses to the battle herself.

Fortunately, without creeps around, most people are timid, so melting the creep is enough to defend most towers :)

So far, I'm liking Warwick, Twitch, and Chogath a lot, for various reasons.

The game seems to have various inherent traits, which I'd consider to be "issues". Most notably, the focus on survival at all costs, and the complete lack of penalty for Fleeing like a Whipped Dog, leads to just about everyone turning tail and running when they're about to lose, and often depriving you of a kill.

As far as games are concerned, I'm personally more inclined to the "die with honour" mindset. LoL seems nice at first, but it isn't growing on me at all, and the more I learn about it indepth, and the elitist people who inhabit the most skilled inner core, the less it appeals to me,

There are a lot of playable champions, each with, as in FFH, their own unique take on the general gameplay mechanics. The difference here though is that only a selection of those are playable at any given time (unless you pay, or play a LOT)

This unfortunately leads to situations of running into someone you've never met before, and "getting owned" because you have literally no idea what you're up against, while they probably know your attacks and weaknesses inside out.

One of the most annoying factors for me, is range. Characters are roughly divided into melee and ranged. the former need to be more or less touching their target to attack, whereas the latter can attack by throwing something or other from some distance away. The biggest problem I find, is that, most likely in the interests of balance, all champions have roughly the same range as each other, with their special attacks, etc. This tends to lead to appealing to a DM to cut the player slack, and can become a device to cheating.

the various characters are nice, btu they seeem unbalanced. I've run across a few threads n the official dev forums (which, typically, the devs haven't officially responded to) that seem to share opinions of certain champions being either overpowered, or weak. So far, I've no reason to disagree with the above pretenses

Yeah, the nerd rage in some games is horrendous. Some people on there are incredibly malicious about the verbal abuse, ruining what may have otherwise been a good game. And few are very forgiving about learning how to use a new character, or how to survive against a new one (I finally saw Anivia in a game for the first time a few days ago, got beat down a few times for not understanding her exact range).

One thing I recently learned is that Sivir, my favorite so far, and one I rarely see anyone else use, is actually considered one of the top tier champions once you get past the "newb" stage of the game. Though I don't see HOW I can get past that stage any time soon since with her you don't get many kills (and get killed a lot, even if you do subscribe to the "run away" mentality)

This is nothing new, it's exactly the issues with DotA, except now they have a business model to exploit it.

The survival gameplay is interesting though because that is what makes battles fun imo.
If I didn't care about my characters life (like if it was easy to respawn) you would just, as you say it, run in for a heroic death. Instead of as now, try to get a satisfying kill against a target that REALLY doesn't want to die.

The gameplay imbalance is only going to work in their favor.

I played League (no, I'm not going to call it LoL!) for a bit. It was an interesting change, especially since I know some people playing it. But, really, it is a poor imitation of Defense of the Ancients; it has all of the flaws, and none of the fun. I stopped playing it just before Poppy was introduced.

Gameplay revolves around roving gank squads; numbers are all that matter, because the creeps/towers are absolute trash. If you're down a player, you are almost certainly going to lose. Of course, no one will ever surrender when there's even the slightest hope of victory and, once the surrender IP/XP penalties are put into the game, surrendering will be a thing of the past. On top of this, the community is going to become increasingly concentrated and "elite," i.e. forming guilds or whatever and coordinating 5-man premades to stomp pugs.

I'll probably play it again some time, though, maybe next year. It'll be interesting to see how far the game is developed.

Gameplay-wise, my favourite hero is Master Yi. Wuju Style!™
Aesthetically, my favourite hero is Cho'Gath.

What do you guys think of the voice sets for the heroes (or the game's sound in general)? It is the only game where I actually muted them, because of their horrendous repetitiveness.

BARREL!

:) semi-Inside joke. I had played a game once where every single time you clicked to destroy a random object for the potential of goodies inside (zelda-style rupee hunt) the player would shout "Barrel!" presumably because the most frequent such destroyable WAS a barrel. But he would also say the same for flower pots, bushes, and assundry other items you could destroy. It got VERY annoying, then INSANELY hilarious.

Anyway, I mostly keep the sound on for the announcer, so I don't have to read the blip of text to know if it was a friend or foe who died.

Actually had a game once where 2 of our people ragequite in the first 10 seconds or so. Ran around as 3v5 for a VERY long time, but nearly won the game amazingly. The only person on the other team even partially competant was a Yi, but he was VERY good and had some insane DPS (basically got a crit each shot, and was lifestealing quite considerably), so once our respawn timers got long enough, they won the game.

As a former Warcraft 3 player who didn't play Dota, I have a duty to myself to stay away from playing it, and any clone.

Coolness, according to their site data, I have 8 people who have joined through my link. 3 of them are only level 1, so possibly decided they didn't care for the game much, but that still means I may happen to wind up with an IP bonus. Maybe eventually some others will happen upon this thread and I'll wind up with the free champion for 10 recruits :)

I still find it hilarious that they have rewards listed up to 10,000 recruitments and that they think $1,000 will cover an expenses paid trip. Figure half of that is just the flight, then $30 a day for food, and either $50 for a crappy hotel or $100 for a decent one pegs you at only 5 days in town with them, IF you don't do anything except work on the Champion idea while there. Assuming that lack of other activity it is plenty of time, and I guess anyone able to get 10,000 recruits may find that to be suficient reason to interrupt their life for such a trip :p

Probably cheating, but those of you who did join the game, go vote for a champion creation contest. It's nothing officially supported by the game makers, just for kicks and grins on the forums. But I sure wouldn't mind winning anyway :p Assuming of course you like mine well enough that it is the one you vote for :D
