Hey, Towel Day started small, too.

I never heard of this until tonight. This is the second mention; the first was in the author's notes for a Harry Potter fanfic I'm reading (the Order of the Phoenix has blitzed the Ministry for Magic in an effort to depose Delores Umbridge and Sirius (brought back from the dead; this is post-Deathly Hallows) decides that including towels in everyone's arsenal would be a good idea - and it is momentarily useful when they run into an unexpected chimera guarding a pile of stolen treasure. There's a subplot in which Sirius discovers he likes Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
