Oh, the weather outside is...

It's a record by well over 1 degree, previous was 48.3. A 1.6 degree jump in the temperature record in one leap.

We hit a record 43.6 44.0 in Canberra, too. Also more than a degree jump in the record. On the plus side, the oven door wind is blowing the incredibly thick smoke away from us after it sat over us coming in from 3 directions for several days.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it is currently (at 4:55pm) 46.8 C. It is not fun. I just brought my washing in from outside, and it feels freshly ironed.

Penrith (further west in Sydney) apparently hit 48.9 C, which I think is an all-time record.
It's a balmy -3C here (just after 11 pm). :)

I still have not seen any snow (usually there should be a good layer about now) and Australia is a burning mess , now tell me that the global warming isn't happening , I refused it for far too long myself but even I cannot ignore the symptoms now. I am sorry as Valka said this should not be a thread about global warming, sorry for that , there is already a thread about it , it is just now it starts to slap me in the face hard. It is cold now, temprerature is just about what it should be but I see the change with my own eyes. It is frightening.

Also it got up to 69.8 degrees celsius and cyclonic wind speeds at the Cabramurra station in the Kosciuszko National Park, presumably due to being directly exposed to bushfire heat and wind.

I cannot believe that it's 69.8 Celsius ????!!!! Shocking !! Maybe it is a mistake ? It is so very close to when water turns into vapor (at 100 degrees Celsius) It's practically impossible to withstand such a temperature for a human - all the cells in Your body pre-boiled !!

Nobody would be near that weather station, but yes that's how hot it can get close to a bushfire and why many or most deaths happen from the radiated heat before the flames get there. That's why fire fighters wear protective gear.

Oh right, now I understand.

Well it's the coldest start to the new year in Perth. This what happens when westerlies are predominant at this time of the year. The Southwest of Australia gets cool weather and the East and Southeast get desert winds which are usually hot and dry. It's what happens when you get a negative SAM, along with a positive IOD and a weak El Nino. The oceanic conditions are driving the climate in Australia right now.

I know that traditionally Australia has been self-sufficient for food (in fact IIRC they have been a significant exporter). I haven't seen it referenced, but how much have the temps and fires impacted food production this season?

D

@Zkribbler Tells us about the volcano and all. I saw a photo of folks in Tag watching it from afar.

Sunny and 60 on Weds. Snow on Thursday. Not much in the city, 1-3", but lots in the mountains.

We got snow yesterday where I live, just a light dusting though... and it didn't even hit 20 miles down the road where I work. I think we might be in for a bigger storm this weekend though... :scared:

Post Christmas snow sucks...

Went to the beach.

This was the weather on arrival.

Nice and sunny when we left but mist was coming in.

Warm day still water temperature was 14 degrees. Went for a swim regardless once the shock wore off stayed in for almost an hour.

I'm envious of everyone.

This picture isn't blurry, there's just a lot of snow between the photographer and Parliament.

Blame Canada (ducks).

I like snow not sure if I could handle months of it. Normally only see it in Alpine areas or once a year.
Snow is at its best when seen on distant mountains.

We just had a storm rush through here with hail so severe it smashed windows in my work building, trashed all the cars parked outside and broke skylights in other buildings as well as stripping trees and hurting/killing birds. Ground outside covered in hailstones the size of golf balls. Building management currently meeting to decide if we all need to be sent home due to the damage to the office.

edit: it went through roofs in places
