Oh, the weather outside is...

According to the Weather Network, it's about -44C now, going down to -47C before dawn. As long as the electricity doesn't do anything inconvenient, Maddy and I have everything we need to get through this.

Well, okay, not quite everything. I'd really like some won ton soup right now, but it's nearly 4 am and everything's closed.

It could be much worse. I could still be living in the suite over the parkade, that had no insulation. I froze for two winters in that one, even with 5 layers of fleece and a heater.

I'm four floors higher now, on the side of the building that gets sunlight in the morning, and has both insulation and a working thermostat.

Here's a heating tip: Put a layer of newspaper between your blankets. It does a great job of trapping body heat.

Looks like it's gonna be a white Christmas this year. :xmas:

-31C without wind chill.
-43C with wind chill. I can hear the wind blowing outside.

I was up to 3 layers, one with fleece, and then discovered that my window is actually open a crack. I managed to close it as much as possible, so it's a bit warmer in here.

Chocolate actually does help noticeably on nights like this (the seniors' centre sent a care package over, including chocolate, crackers, a word search book, and a knitted/lined something that I have no idea WTH it is - too big for a muff, open at both ends so useless for a hat, tube-shaped so isn't a scarf... ), but would be the perfect size for Maddy to snooze on, so I guess she can have it.

Neck warmer?

Neck warmer?

Hm. Never thought of that. Whoever made it must have been planning for a larger person. Not that I don't appreciate the thought. It's hand-made in a nice color. I'm just not sure what to do with it.

Maybe I'll try it if I go out anywhere this winter. The only outing I had last winter was in January, to get my covid booster and a flu shot.

The forecast for tomorrow around here is that it will go from 60F/15C to 15F/-9C as the "bomb cyclone" passes through. :crazyeye:

Tomorrow is not going to be fun. Single digits after windchill, and I'm going to be sprinting around outside all day. Ick.
Especially for those who are not used to the cold.

It went from 41F to -8F between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. That's 5C to -22C. A relatively large swing even for Ohio, which is known for large temperature swings. It has now warmed up to zero (-18C).

It's not too bad, I've become better at layering up over the years. Took a short walk when it was -5F, and aside from wishing I had a balaclava to keep my face warm, it didn't feel bad beneath all the layers and winter gear.

The main problem here is it was raining before it froze so we have snow over ice. There was a 50-car pileup with multiple fatalities in the northern part of the state. Which was unfortunately not very surprising given the conditions, relatively low familiarity with driving in snow compared to the true north, and people's desire to drive places for the holidays.

-40C though? That's super cold! I'd try sending a cup of hot chocolate but I'm pretty sure it would be frozen chocolate by the time it arrived!

That's okay. I have a microwave. :yup:

I actually did have the experience of frozen hot chocolate many years ago. It was in the fall - Thanksgiving weekend, I think, which is mid-October - that my dad and his then-girlfriend we were living with (and her 4 kids) went camping out west. This was getting close to the mountains, so the elevation was a bit higher.

That was one of the years when first snow came later, in November, so things were still reasonably warm in the daytime. There was no snow, but the nights were cold. The five of us kids were all crammed into a tent in sleeping bags while my dad and his girlfriend were cosy in a heated van.

I'd left my hot chocolate out on the picnic table before going to bed (forgot about it at the time). In the morning I found it frozen solid.

Kinda feeling bad. In NZ it's fairly temperate. I'm in the "deep south" and winter us usually single digits maybe freezing overnight.

Generally in the 0-28 Celsius brange up north it's more like 10-15 through to late 20's.

You are in the southern hemisphere, this is summer for you :p

Even in winter though it's not that cold. -8 in the coldest parts of the county in considered very cold.

You might wake up to frost on the ground it rarely hits 0 for prolonged anound of time. Hell rarely hits 0 up north 15 is cold for them or 10.

Weather up north making news here now.
