Okay, finally, what exactly is an "emo kid"?

do NOT confuse Goth with emo people. I'm not goth at all, but I have no problem with it either.

Goth = legitimate style.

Emo = CRAP!

The main problem with emo is the attitude that goes along with it. I don't see the same thing with goth. That is to say, until ComradeDavo starts posting crappy poetry and makes a livejournal about how Bush sucks and Catcher in the Rye is the best book ever, goth is perfectly cool :cooool:

While the emo subculture/identity has propagated into the early 30 somethings, most people really don't care what identity group a person aligne themselves with. My other concern is the lack of tangibility of the identity: what does it mean to be emo? What values does it bring to the individual? What is its significance of it?

In high school my identity was mostly rooted in being a band geek which was not just about making music but also discipline, honour, pride, hard work (oh the practices in the rain...) and achievement. The other component, a computer nerd, seems to share similar troubles as emo as it contains no sense of values and the camaraderie is based only around a shared interest in an activity.

i went to a concert on saturday night and most of the crowd there was emo. and this chubby emo girl who must have been 14-15 who was smoking started hitting on me. i told her to go away and she started crying!

moral of the story. emo kids like to smoke at a young age.

I am Emo, I can explain what emos realy are versus what people hear through the grape vine.
I am not gonna waste my time reposting it becuase I am ignored for the people who heared one song *cough* look up 2 posts *cough* and then think they are experts on the subject.

So if you realy wish to know, PM me.

Why do most of the majority of posters dislike Emos? Certanly I can sense that there is a lot of judging and stereotypings in regards to emos. Jesus said that we should not judge other people.

As I said before, I know and befreinded emos in high school and college and I never judged them. I accepted them as a person and nothing more.

ok dude... let me tell you that i had never heard that song prior to this thread, yet i still had the feelings that had been expressed during the song. coinsidence? i think not. this song is more than propaganda against the emo community, it is a collection of legitiment facts.

Because thats what we are! Were not an alien species!

The poems, self harm etc are all the extremes, same kind of silly **** as Goths drink blood and Punks always fight..

I may have black nail varnish...but thats a metal/goth thing....

To be honest, i'm one of few proper 'grungers' left round these parts, with my ripped hoodies , baggy jeans and natural long hair :)

It's funny when emo girls hit on me. I normally talk about Industrial music or something. or about my girlfriend, that annoys 'em:nya:

You yourself have fallen victim to your own criticisms. First of all you assumed that everyone has seen this video and this is why they have responded the way they have. This is a typical adolescent response so you are forgiven, but I can assure you I have never seen nor heard the video until yesterday.

Once again you assume I've only heard about things through the grapevine. Once again you are making assumptions which are simply false. This particular identity/fad began to form in my highschool about my junior year, I didn't hear of a name to identify it with for another four years (I am now a senior in college). I also understand young people far better than most adults here. I've been teaching youth since I was in 8th grade (pre school swimming lessons, if you call blowing bubbles swimming). I've worked several years with middle schoolers and some work at the high school level. I also have an academic background in adolescent psychology and development as well as identity de/construction. Not only that but I have a practical experience as a hated minority in a great deal of this country.

So yes, I am about as much of an expert as I can get being an interdicipliarian, and probably one of the most qualified people in this entire community to discuss this subject.

A good number of teens complain that no one understands them, but when they are understood they flip out, because they don't want to be understood.

Other than being a telepath (alas I am not), the best way is when you make a prediction on how someone will react in a given situation and they do. There is also a difference between understanding an aspect of a person and the entire person. It is much more easy to do the former than the latter, especially online. When an individuals' identity is based on a singular aspect (as most adolescents are), assessment regrettably becomes more easy. The problem with a singular identity is that if it is attacked then we see the reaction exhibited here (and note that the inverse is not necessarily true, just because I see reaction Z means its caused by thing A).
