Olso, Norway, hit by explosions

It ain't a blown gas main...

My thoughts exactly.

Several Danish targets got very close to getting hit by extreme terrorists, but luckily they were prevented in the last moment. Including the paper that originally printed the Muhammed drawings and the actual person who did the drawings.
VG had little to do with that incidence, and it is very probably just collateral damage. This is an attack on the state itself. Pretty symbolic I'd say.

Still no casualties reported? Phew, that's a good thing.
Confirmed one dead, eight wounded so far.

Isn't Norway involved in air strikes on Libya?
And in Afghanistan. And we were in an "advisory" position in Iraq for a short while. We've also involved ourselves as negotiators in lots of conflicts around the world. And we were targeted during the Mohammad cartoons.

CNN is reporting at least two explosions occurred, but the stories on the internet so far only mention one.
We don't really know yet.

IF this is a terror attack, then theories of several synchronized car bombs seem to be correct.

It is still possible that this was a huge gas explosion, but that seems doubtful.

The only possible suspects are the same guys who would bomb most of the Western world if given the chance...

I'd be very surprised if Muslims weren't involved in this one. We'll know soon enough.

Reports in BBC of car bomb

The problem is that I can't see a crater, and there aren't any car parts hanging around.

Unless that black patch in the foreground is where the car sat, which seems to be the epicenter(ish) judging by the debris.

Is terrorism what the Norwegian media are speculating at the moment?
Yeah. It's the absolute most likely reason.

But most media and people are still concerned with finding out if anyone else need help, and getting eyewitness reactions.

What and probably who did it, and why, will come later.

In that picture, there seems to be more damage to the upper stories of the building than street level. That seems odd if it was a car bomb.

I know. I'm wondering about that part as well.

Some reports say the explosion came from the second floor of that building, while others report of a small crater below the wreckage of a car.

@Form: The helipad is on top of one of the main government buildings. It's not a hospital.

The police is still of course concerned that there might be other bombs around, but traditionally I'd guess that's unlikely by now.

BBC coverage suggests a car bomb (quoting ABC, quoting the US govt.), and backs it up with video of the scene, which seem to show a destroyed car.

You can't see it in this picture, but in a video from the same area there is a blown up car on its side with a big bulge in its middle. An expert on NRK said it looked like a ar bomb. Also heard there is a crater there as well.

Now the entire city center is in chaos and many important locations are being evacuated. In the Oslo central station there are rumors of an unexploded suitcase bomb.

Uh...

- Still two bombs we don't know the location of, says police to Aftenposten.

It's confirmed that it was a bomb explosion, and also confirmed that several people are dead.

I dunno.

Moreover, the blast seems to be small because the bricks on the build merely fell down and weren't blasted. Most of the debris seems small and trees perhaps 20 foot away still have leaves on their branches.

Eh, interesting. I'm just wondering where that is relative to the image we have. I'm guessing down the reverse slope of that hill.

The bomb has blown up windows over a kilometer away. Seems big enough to me.

One (the only?) bomb was located between the Prime Minister's office and the Ministry of Oil and Energy.

Not all ministers are accounted for yet.

I'm a bit dumbfounded as well. But that's what at least two news media has reported from what I've seen.

I noticed that as well, but the strange thing is that windows have been blown out for many hundreds of metres away. The damage seems very strangely distributed.

Watching Norway's primary channel NRK.

It has been confirmed 2 dead, 8 seriously wounded and a number of minor injuries, but are now rummored to be more wounded and potentially more dead. They have just confirmed it was a bomb explosion, so this is no accident. The Prime minister is safe. Major damage to the street itself. No group has as of yet claimed responsibility.

Bomb went off at Einar Gerhardsens Plass (Einar Gerhardsen's Square) which is the site of Norway's government offices. It was a car bomb. Norways rescue services are on site, including police, ambulances, firedepartment and military police.

At this point information is still somewhat confused, but its getting clarrified. *They are now giving Media free access to the street itself, within limits of proximity to the explosion site.* Or counter-info, they are closing of streets, now quite some distance away from the explosion.
