According to Wiki, Rock Paper Scissors originated in China or Korea somewhere, and was introduced to the West only in the 19th century. The World Championships are held each year in Toronto and are carried by Fox Sportsnet.

this is weird but over the summer some people came to the Ann Arbor libraries to give tips on rock paper scissors. hmm....i wonder what kinda tips you can make up about rock paper scissors

Know what's funny, I first learned the game in Japanese (from a Japanese friend). It wasn't until a couple years later that I learned it also existed in American culture.

To this day, the Chinese name of this game translates as "Scissors-Rock-Cloth". Apparently it predates the invention of paper.

In greek the game is rock-scissors-glue-paper. If i had to guess how the 'glue' part was added i would say that it was added due to a mistake; the greek word for glue is very similar to the greek word for a type of paper And if i remember correctly the glue defeats the paper (glues it up and lets it suffer in its miserable state) but is defeated by the rock (presumably it gets squashed out of its tube) and i am not sure if the scissors defeat it or not, but it could work either way.

Around here, rochambeau refers to quite a different game.

When we play rochambeau - which no one actually plays - you take turns kicking the other person in the balls until someone gives up. The winner gets whatever was beign fought over.
