Online petition for an updated Civ III editor

Skylar 2 may be what we all have been hoping for (or despising, according to batman). He's done some real neat things with civ 3: barbs capturing cities, no AI razing, and more. He could realy help acheive that which we wish from Firaxis and company. I also am experimenting with the conquests.ini in the hopes that I'll stumble on some 31 civ limit-breaking method.

I think you have me wrong. I am astounded at the work Skyer did, but then he dropped off the face of the internet planet. That drives me nuts. If he came back, that would be fabulous.

Until then, like I have said a zillion times, no chance of this game's code being altered/improved. The really good coders are working on Civ IV, and I am no where good enough a coder to figure out the executable of this game, though I did make one small inroad on the read-only biq.

I'm beginnint study Comp Sci at the Academy, so in four years...maybe I'll be able to help with the code, that is, if you guys want to wait that long...

Whos waitn. Mybe it comes mybe it don't. IN the mean time we play new mods and help develop up n comers. There is always a new mod thats raised the bar just out like MEM. Thanks to embyo an co you can play vassel and have maintence system that if mismanged hurts science pace for the first time.

THen we got Robs mod coming out not to mention Stephs great work. ALso the chance of the Great Epic.

THe biggest thing going for CIv3 right now is the fact they have processors that elimate lag at mid game and there on in.
CIv4 won't be at the level of perfection till around 2009. SO ya , CIv3 at its best pefromance is reason enough to say we are happily occupied at the moment :)

Comp sci rarely involves heavy coding, normally they include an introductory class on one of the languages. You would need to specialize in Programming, Game programming to be more exact in order to really understand the source code for Civ3. I've spent a whole year learning Java and I can tell you heavy coding is still beyond my grasp. So 4 years of Comp Sci would be completely useless in regards to Civ3s source code.

You don't really need heavy coding to program a game such as Civ.
You just need time

Truly. In this case, it's the algorithms behind the code telling the program what to do on the gameboard (a.k.a. the "AI") that I imagine would consume the most time and effort.

Best,

Oz

do both of these work for you, logitech?

Well enough, though I have little use for barbs capturing cities. It's obvious that I somehow ended up with the no-cd version of conquests. Can someone tell me why there are TWO versions of conq.? I missed that discusion...

Sorry batman, it was just a :joke: . And I think that it's strange that both Skylar & Skylar 2 have the same name, and are both also good at coding. :crazyeye:

Just a thought, money probably is the driving factor behind this, so what if a rich CivFanatic bought the rights to the source code from Firaxis, and then released it to the community? Still let Firaxis sell copies, just also pay them to allow fans to modify the code.

I realize this probably isn't going to happen for a few years at least, but it may eventually be a possibility. For that matter, it might be for Civ2 at this time.

Alas, as a college student with an income of nil, I'm in no position to buy any code rights.

I think this thread's older than me! I keep seeing it make a re-appearance now and again. Whilst I guess the code won't be released and the wishlist won't happen for Civ III, perhaps Jason from 2k games (who I started this thread for, way back when), can consider this as "things civ fans would like to see in a civ game" ready for the next version - Civ V!!

Well maybe we can make a new thread then, some of us weren`t very benign in choosing our words in this one.. :mischief:

Yes, but I was impeccably polite, and they wouldn't even open business negotiations. We can dream, but I'm afraid we can't make it real.

I think we need to take a new, tougher stance, such as this:

Darling Fascist Bully Boy,

Give me the Civ3 Source Code, you B******,

May the seed of your loin be fruitfull in the belly of your woman,

Virote
