Online petition for an updated Civ III editor

<Gogf> Yikes! :o
<Strider> Going back to an OLDER game... Civ3. Any plans to release the source code for it? Alot of modders would love you for it.
<Dale> A third? 2nd isn't out yet! lol
<Solver> Civ4: Beyond the Death Robots :D
<Strider> haha, that would make Perfection happy..
<Thunderfall> <CTH> Any changes to the game engine? Improvments in graphic or in preformance?
<alexman> I don't know about releasing the source code for Civ3. But there is source code for Civ4. Why not use that?
<GarretSidzaka> LOL some ppl are still addicted to civ3!
<Gogf> Guest740: can they explain the new religion options, i.e. how you can choose islam before buddism, and how that affects the game?
<Thunderfall> there is still a large and active Civ3 modding community. :)
<Solver> It's a flavour feature really
<Gogf> Lots of people are asking me to ask about Civ3. Quite a lot of people are still addicted!
<GarretSidzaka> :)
* Guest378 (~jirc@2ae78891.3a07d0d4.gr.home.nl) has left #civfanatics
<Methos> <Aoro> Are there any new benefits to the State Property civic to make up for blocking the use of corporations, or was that civic already overpowered?
<alexman> We had to improve performance to account for the more computationally-intensive AI, but in the end I think it's the same as for Warlords
<Ploeperpengel> I wouldn't blame them. Civ3 is still good for nice games and many poeple still have old comps;)
<Gogf> [5:45pm] SmashTheAxis: does leonard nimoy speak the quotes of the new techs?
<Gogf> If it wasn't for Civ4, I would still be playing Civ3

So.... I heard Soren Johnson is still around, and occasionally giving suggestions to Civ4 designers. Along with some other bits of information, unfortunately nothing very concrete. Aparently we have to contact 2K about the Civ3 code, but I think some people here might have known this already. :)

I sent an e-mail, no response yet, nor am I expecting one.

EDIT: I did get a response [party]

Hi Alex,

Thank you for contacting us. At this time, it’s not possible to give out the source code for this title.

Sincerely,

Eric

Full Conversation:
Hello, my name is [Blankety Blank]. Me and my friends play a popular game, Civilization III: Conquests and we also like to modify the game. However, we have run into numerous editor restrictions and bugs in the game. The only way around this would be the release of the source code for this game, as was done by Civilization IV. We are willing to pay money for this source, and it would be great if we could get a price or information on the source code.

Hi [Blankety],

Thank you for contacting us. At this time, it’s not possible to give out the source code for this title.

Sincerely,

Eric

Even for a large sum of money or offer? We believe it would possibly lead to more sales to the game, because more people could mod the game to a great level.

No. Sorry.

Seems like a pretty firm "No."

It's okay, it's what I was honestly expecting. Do you expect a timetable for it's release at some point in the next 2 years, or will it never be released?

Hi [Blankety],

Sorry I don’t have an answer for that.

Cheers,

Eric

They're not going to give it to us.

Darn it. What would they have to loose if they did give it to us?

And that was good work last night.

@Stormy: No, internet connection started playing up last night.

How about asking for part of the code, or a small update. I'm sure we could form up a small list of easy-to-fix changes, like setting the improvements/wonders limit to 1024, etc.

^ But I'm afraid the programmers that worked on civ3 might no longer be in the same company, and that others will be afraid to take on such a work of changing a code made by someone else. Not saying it's a bad idea, we should try anything.

CivFanatics Chat Room. Just click the Chat link at the top of this site. It's going on right now, and me and Virote tried asking already, but the moderators didn't ask the questions to the team. Maybe if enough people do it...:mischief:

Cheers to you and Virote!

-Oz
