Orcs and Humans

Medivh...Medivh...MEDIVH!

King Llane Wrynn awoke in a shock of cold sweat, confused for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. After reorienting himself to his surroundings and realizing he was home, in Stormwind keep, in bed, in the dark, alone, he sighed. He closed his eyes in relief, and wiped the sweat from his brow.

He had been having nightmares, the same one, every night. The dream always started out with him, as a child. He would be playing in the courtyard near the Cathedral of the Light in Stormwind with his best friends, Anduin Lothar and Medivh. It was always a sunny, happy day. There was always a sparrow in a tree to his left, chirping away, as sparrows are wont to do.

But, just as him and his friends were laughing and chasing each other, the skies would darken to storm clouds in mere seconds. At this point, rain would start to fall, then hail, pelting the children. Llane would beg his friends to head inside, but they kept refusing. Anduin would start to get angry towards Medivh, blaming him for the storm, saying it was his fault their fun would have to end. Medivh would merely stare at him, not denying any of it, but not declaring his own guilt, all the while little Llane would continue to beg his friends to go inside.

Then, a flash, and lightning would strike poor little Medivh. Only, he wasn't little anymore. He would, at this point, turn out to be a man grown. Tall, ominous, his face clouded under a hood. He would stand over the other two, who were still children, laughing a deep, dark laugh. In his right hand would be a staff of gnarled oak wood. He would continue to laugh, as both Llane and Anduin attempted to run away, but every direction they turned, Medivh would be there, chanting his name over and over and over, until finally, he would point his staff at the two frightened children, the end glowing in growing power, and yell his name.

At this point, King Llane always woke up.

This was all the boy's fault, he knew. He had already had enough trouble on his plate until Medivh's blasted apprentice Khadgar had shown up, with that Orc whore, to announce to both King Llane and Knight Anduin Lothar that their once good friend was the one behind the opening of the Dark Portal, and the summoning of the Orcish horde to Azeroth. Not only was he the reason behind it, but, as Khadgar explained, and Lothar now seemed to completely agree, he was either working in league with demons or was, in fact, one himself. Both possibilities frightened King Llane beyond words.

The king shook his head. A small part of him hoped this was all a mistake, some kind of misunderstanding. But that part of him grew smaller and smaller every day. The part that was replacing it was convinced of Khadgar's story. He had been noticing Medivh's change in personality since he awoke from his twenty year coma, but he never believed it was because he had turned his back on his own race, his own world. But, by joining with the demons, by opening a portal to another land, he had done just that.

King Llane needed to do something about this. He couldn't have a rogue wizard living on his doorstep, especially one with the powers of demons at his disposal. But Medivh wasn't just a threat to the Kingdom of Stormwind. He was a threat to the entire world. And if he was as strong as Khadgar claimed, which would seem pretty evident if he had opened the Dark Portal all by himself, than the world would need to help control him. It seemed to Llane that sending in an army to detain the traitor would not be enough. He would need heroes. True heroes, men who could prove their loyalty to Azeroth to their very bones. Men who could lead others, men who could wield magics and weapons as no one else could.

But, even more than that, he would need allies.

So, instead of going back to bed, King Llane lit a lamp, pulled out sheets of parchment, and began writing letters, secret letters, to the kings of the human, elven, and dwarf kingdoms. For their eyes only. He only prayed that they would take his call to action seriously...

To: The Human Kingdoms
From: King Llane

Brother, I, King Llane, of the City of Stormwind, the Kingdom of Stormwind, beg you give me your attention. A dire threat has found itself upon our very world. I am not speaking of the Orcish hordes which rampage in large numbers to our south. I am not even talking of the mysterious Dark Portal from whence these beasts entered our realm. I am talking of a darker evil, one that has been here for a long time, but has only now been discovered.

It has come to my attention that the master of the tower of Karazhan, Medivh, is the man responsible for opening the Dark Portal, and unleashing the ravenous Horde upon our lands. Worse still, word has reached me that he is not acting alone, but is in fact in league with demons. They may in fact be the source of his power.

The man is a rogue, a traitor, a villain. He is also the most skilled practitioner of the arcane arts that may have ever lived. I ask that you send aid to the Kingdom of Stormwind, which now finds itself the vanguard of Humanity against the forces that wish to destroy it. Send your best trained soldiers, your most skilled mages, and the men to lead them, to Elwynn Forest to help us keep this new threat in check. The Orcs are a threat, but we must deal with the one who brought them here, before he causes any more harm to our beloved Azeroth.

P.S. This is for your eyes only. We do not want to risk panic amongst the people which this sort of news would likely bring.

I, King Llane of the city of Stormwind, of the Kingdom of Stormwind, write to you as a fellow citizen of this very world. You may not have had much to do with your taller neighbors to your south, but we humans have always respected Dwarven ingenuity in the past, and have need of it now.

As you are surely aware, there are dark clouds brewing on the horizon. A horde of bloodthirsty Orcs threaten the very life of every inhabitant of this great world. A dark and ominous new doorway stands open between our lands and some other, foreign, dangerous one. However, I write to you now with even more bad news, news which should be for your eyes only, as the information is staggering, and would more than likely cause panic amongst the people should they find out.

I have recently been approached by someone close to Medivh, the master of Karazhan. This source, a very reliable one, it should be noted, has approached me with the troubling news that Medivh is the man behind the opening of the Dark Portal. Not only is he the one who opened it, but it seems he is working with demons, as well.

The man has a reputation as one of the, if not the, strongest spellcasters in the world. He is not a threat to be taken lightly. It is for this reason that I ask for the Dwarves to send aid in taking him, and his Orcish horde down. Stormwind is the closest kingdom capable of dealing with these dangers, but we can not do it alone. From what our scouts tell us, this Horde is large, dangerous, nothing like the Trolls we all fight every day. These are true warriors, warriors that, I believe, a Dwarf would love to prove himself against.

However, if it is not done so for the honor of fighting deadly foes, we request your aid for the simple desire of survival. Should these forces now threatening our great lands be left uncontested, they will surely leave nothing but death in their wake. I await your prompt reply.

It has been many an age since humans and elves last banded together to face down a large and deadly foe. I write to you today to ask that we bring back the once great alliance to face the new dangers which face our lands.

As you are likely aware, a new portal has opened in our southern lands, from which has spewed a vast, endless horde of creatures never before seen in Azeroth, the Orcs. As limitless and deadly as they are, I believe they are not our true threat, but merely a result of the main one. Recently, I have learned, our true threat lies in Karazhan.

Medivh, the master of the tower there, one of the greatest mages of our time, it appears, has gone rogue. This news comes from a reliable source close to the man, who informs me that not only is Medivh responsible for the opening of the Dark Portal and the arrival of the Orcish Hordes, but he is also in league with demons. I feel this information is very important to the people of Silvermoon and Quel'Thalas, and request that you send immediate aid to help us not only control the Horde, but to capture and bring to justice the traitor who brought them here.

We request your immediate response and hope that you can see the necessary need for Stormwind to call upon the arcanists of Silvermoon to lend a hand in defeating and controlling such a large and deadly threat to the entire world as we know it.

The elves are ready. We wold be eager to fight to defeat the orc hordes that pose a threat to Stormwind. Its just that the other human kingdoms don'y acknowledge our help, and passing through their lands, might be a tad problematic.

Forget not the incessant insults of the hu-mans. They are a feeble, spiteful race and will provide a satisfying conquest for the Horde. We have spoken to you before and have made our disinterest in your frosty northern forests clear. However the northern hu-mans appear quite fond of the climate, why would they refuse your aid other than to later act on their desires? Your course of which you told us, while a tenuous one was wise in age, why should high elves travel far and wide to fight for hateful man that covets their lands?

The gangly weaklings, the small nations of farmers and fowl-eating fools, they desire your gold. As do we, but the potential offer of fighting your enemies in return for such gold is all that an orc could ever desire.

Greenskins do you really think you can fool us, with you false promises ? If the hu-man kingdom falls, would you really not look further north, your to-be-graveyards? With the necromancers controlling your hordes and your general lack of logical thinking we feel, the battle would come down to our very own kingdom. Now we do not want that to happen, do we ?

No, it really is too cold, distant and extremely well defended. We look forward to proving our disinterest of your lands with actions instead of words, as we understand your recalcitrance in this matter. We will however take a joy in battle with any of your expeditionary forces, as we have heard that elves are quite the fierce and skillfull fighters, despite your necessary reliance on long-distance weaponry.
We look forward to a glorious spread of the blood and guts from participants on all sides (though primarily humans) that the Dark Gods may revel in, the invitation to which needs only one's own assent.

So you say now, we shall keep a watch on your activities

If the other Humans will not allow passage of the elves through their lands, then perhaps the Elves could travel by ship to Westfall where we can promise safe landings along our coast there? This may prove to be a quicker form of travel, as well.

Technically Doomhammer isn't chief, just a warrior of the Blackrock Clan. Blackhand is the Warchief of the Orcish Horde.

Consider this the 24 hour warning to get those orders in. This first turn of orders is immensely important as it will allow me to figure out what bits of the rules need clarifying and whatnot. So please, point out any problems or ideas in your first orders, as it will help me solidify the ruleset for the rest of the NES.

Medivh. Medivh is not some sort of two-bit wizard, nor is he a hedge wizard struggling to learn the arcane. Medivh is.. stronger then any of the Magi here within the walls of Dalaran, stronger then any Elf, stronger then even I. Dare I say, he is perhaps the single most powerful man on the very face of Azeroth. But now, if what you say is true, if Medivh has been consorting with indeed Demons, I sunder at even the thought of the sort of foul magic he now has at his beck and call.

As denizens of this fair world, the Kirin Tor will assist you in bringing about the end of this mad-men, now we must make the up-most haste, for who knows what more horrors he can bring a upon this world, if he is left un-checked.

To:Human Kingdoms.

I urge you, fair and wise Kings, to send what men you can spare, join Stormwind and Dalaran in ending this madmen. Our lands may never know peace once more, should he remain.

Thank you for your prompt reply and for taking our message of help seriously. Medivh is truly the darkest threat the world has ever seen, and we must stop him from committing any more acts of destruction. Stormwind is honored that the wizard of the Kirin Tor are coming to our aid.

OOC: Ooops, right, sorry about the name and title (Doomhammer just stuck in my mind), fixed now.

Orders sent.
