Pacific/Oceania Mod- Discussion Thread

Not entirely complete, but a basic civ list:
Samoa, Tonga and Fiji need to be in there. Tonga in particular had an empire.
They're also the largest and most populated islands (along with Hawaii and New Zealand).

A Pacific scenario is going to be tough. Small scattered islands with lots of open ocean in between doesn't normally make for a fun civ scenario, particularly give how bad the AI is at inter-island warfare.

I do have Civ V, but I play it rarely and was confused as I jumped from a Civ IV forum. Disregard my previous posts, switching to Civ V mentality.
No worries, easily done.

Well, the original list was:
Kingdom of Hawai'i
Marquesas
Samoa
Kingdom of Tahiti
Tonga
Cook Islands
The Maori
Rapa Nui

'Course, most of those probably aren't possible.
The Papuans, Fiji, and Koori would probably work.
Not positive about Nan Madol, but that would be a good one.

Uncertain if Joey just wandered in via my sig. (If you actually have civ V, speak up).
In any event, I'm thinking I may jump on the Hawai'i scenario first, because it doesn't require lua (I think).
First and foremost, I'm going to rework GP with that one - they'll be more combat-oriented.
Any other thoughts (or anyone willing to re-work the map)?

I'll make a Civ V Hawaii map ASAP. I'll start with 96x60 and work my way up bigger.

Damn! How do you make a Civ V map flat!??!?

Disable World Wrap. It's one of the options under "Misc" in WorldBuilder or something.

Massive WIP for the Hawai'ian scenario, thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

Wow, that's pretty substantial, and you've done a damn good job on it. If you want to make a version for people with the Poly DLC, you could use the tech icons from that.

No you don't. Like in my Ancient World mod, I used art from Wonders of the Ancient World and Polynesia without requiring those icons. Just rip the images into your own DDS file and use that, it works (simple print screen).

OK, so, that list isn't actually modded in yet. I was looking for feedback.
That being said, it won't be hard to put that in, its all xml.

As for graphics, the first version will be new graphic-less. It'll probably lack new civs, too, but, still.
Anyways, after I have the mod functioning, I'll probably comb through DLC and mods for new graphics to incorporate (technologies will probably be the first graphics online, I think I can pull them from Vanilla, Poly, and New World). A non-DLC finalized version will replace the original when the entire mod is complete.

As for the scenario itself:

The only victory condition will be domination.

I'm thinking of retro-fitting Redox's naval mod for this (it requires units to be moved via ship, IIRC). I want this to make navies more player-supported, but, if the AI can't use it, it'll go back out.

GP will be re-worked. Each GP will be re-worked into a military unit, if I can pull it off. That being said, I'll probably need new names (I.E., Not GA). I also am only certain about one ability (the new GA power).

I'm going to comb through existing stuff later, but I need both terrestrial units and technology ideas, ATM.

Ok, so, FYI:
There are 4 military naval units (War canoe, Hybrid canoe, Warships, and the Brittania (which will be granted upon completion of the Vancouver Expedition Wonder).
There is 1 siege unit (Cannons).
There is 1 scout-like unit (Kukini).
There is 1 ranged unit (Muskets). I'm changing this into a ranged anti-personnel unit.
While I do need more units in general, I specifically need some terrestrial melee units.

In addition, I think buildings are all set (and wonders won't be hard), but I do need technologies.
At least the first (DLC version) release will include the SPs from the Poly scenario.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that's verging on illegal (Distributing files which have been paid for)

You're not going to get arrested for ripping 1 or 2 tiny icons. Relax. :P

Get to researchin'. And good luck with modifying the policies, they're very fickle and prone to breaking at a moment's notice.

Well, the good news about these SPs is that they're already complete, it's basically just a copy/paste job.

Firaxis has special powers and when you try to do things they did, it doesn't work as well.

I believe they delete every policy and add new ones? When I tried doing that in Mesopotamia, the UI just broke completely. I had to manually update the existing ones, it was crazy.

I don't know why. It probably has to do with the SocialPolicyPopup.lua or whatever it's called. I don't want to modify those files yet. :P

Sorry I don't think I can help much, I just don't know enough about Polynesian Hawaii.

It does sound like Kamehameha had pretty significant numbers of muskets and cannon, and with traditional spearmen.
It sounds like there should probably be some kind of traditional beliefs/Christianity conflict.

Good luck! I bet you'll learn a ton doing this.
