Pat Robertson calls for assassination of Hugo Chavez

VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

'We have the ability to take him (Chavez) out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,' Robertson said.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59% of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

We've got to start taking out these red nuts and starting with Venezuela isn't a bad idea. I'm tuning into the 700 Club from now on. :goodjob:

You really ought to make sure there's a new regime you could put into place; otherwise, you might just assasinate him and get an equally unacceptable underling as the new President.

What you do is fund an insurgent group, and then, once they are strong enough to take control in a power vaccum, then you off the offender. Or you support a coup, as we had the chance to do in Venezuela early on.

Chavez is in bed with America? Right...

I wonder how Christian it is to call for an assassination, though.

And as SN points out, if you're going to try that, you really need to back it up with something. The last one where Chavez was ousted for two days had nothing going for it. So there was a counter-coup.

Are you serious rmsharpe (and SN?!)? Criticism does not at all mandate or even justify assassination.

Like America doesn't purchase the majority of Venezuelan oil? forget the rhetoric and look at the economic reality....
It's an economic reality. If Chavez didn't have to export to the US, he wouldn't. He's been offering cut rates to his friend in Cuba, for instance, while making sure he gets all the cash he can get from the US.

Don't we have a whole lot of other countries we'd be better off bombing first than Venezuela?

And this man represents the Christian morale in America? He can found his own terrorist organisation

Oh, I am starting to like the Catholics more and more. Compared with the US evangelical nuts, they're harmless...

I'm by no means a fan of left-wing politics. Anf mr. Chavez is indeed a looney.

However, we should not react so blindly towards Venezula, its decades-long misery and its current politics.

I have my doubts whether an old-fashioned right-wing system will give Venezuela, and especially the Venezolan individuals, a fair opportunity to pursuit happiness and wealth. The country lacks a decent infrastructure and economy structure. Nationalising oil revenues and spending it on a structure that will actually provide the Venezolans a fair opportunity to pursuit happiness and wealth, seems a good idea.

I don't think Chavez is the right man, but so far he still has the benefit of the doubt.

Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord.

I'm sorry--it just irks me to see "devout" Christians advocating killing.

This isn about Chávez, we all know he is populist and authoritarian.

This is about the leader of one of the most influent US Christian organisations, who advocates killing.

This Pat R. is mentally disabled. It's unethical to speak so harsh about people with a serious disability.

Why don't we kill Pat Robertson instead? That would be a much greater gain for humanity.

I think considering the U.S. stance and actions against religious* "hate preachers" Venezuela is justified in taking every measure possible to terminate that danger to their President, including the risk of collateral damage...

*Or was it really just "muslim", after all?
