Patch is out!!!

Amazing how people keep on complaining. Simply amazing.

Bad ideas that we weren't consulted on are bad ideas that we weren't consulted on. An early 500:c5gold: or 10:c5happy: are gamebreaking advantages, and this should have been obvious in playtesting. So why are they included by default?

A 10:c5happy: tile makes a certain amount of sense for a scenario designed to promote conflict, but there really isn't any gameplay justification for handing out 500:c5gold: randomly in the first few turns.

All of you complaining about Cerro Potosi, Fountain of Youth, and El Dorado... You did note the bit in the patch info about NW rarity, right? They will not appear in all games, nor even most games.

That just makes them all the more imbalancing when they do appear.

That's a fair point. I only wish they allocated that software engineer who implemented the new natural wonders, to fixing Civ V so it doesn't suck quite as much HW resources.

By the way (completely off-topic) - your steam ID is cool.

Haha thank you. :D

All you have to do is change two lines in one XML file and El Dorado and the Fountain of Youth will never appear on a random map...I've already done it.

My problem with the inclusion of silly, gimmicky, unrealistic features isn't that they are too difficult to code out on my own.....my problem is that these silly, gimmicky, unrealistic features reveal a conscious disregard of significant majority of the hardcore civ community that appreciates when the game, when possible and not inconvenient, attempts to represent reality and historical accuracy.

Also, I am critical because the designers ought to be able to anticipate an obvious broken feature, such as the fountain of youth -- my problem is that a red flag in their heads should have gone up as soon as this idea sprang into existence. Yes, the community will fix it, but I really wonder how ideas like these get implemented into the game. I wish I could be in the meeting when these ideas are raised so I could say, "uh, no, that's a bad idea! And here's the reasons...."

On the other hand, a lot of good fixes with this patch. Still, a long way to go! ;)

I haven't seen the following mentioned yet: Although the default behavior (after patch 1.0.1.135) is that Promotions and Policies must be selected immediately, the Advanced Game Options in Advanced Setup allow you to revert to the prior rules ("Allow Policy Saving" and "Allow Promotion Saving").

What about saving issue? The patch note says it was fixed. Can anybody confirm that it is completely fixed?(no more crash during loading - corrupted save files)

It really isn't amazing. CIV 4 evolved into the game it became because, for 5 years, people never stopped complaining, the modders modded, and the designers listened. That's how CIV 5 may eventually reach it's fullest potential. So instead of complaining about people complaining, embrace the fact that CIV5 will continue to evolve because people who love CIV won't be satisfied with anything less than the best CIV possible.

Why is everyone saying they downloaded 500mb worth of patch? I only had 170mb or something... So WTH!?

..... embrace the fact that CIV5 will continue to evolve because people who love CIV won't be satisfied with anything less than the best CIV possible.

Works for me.

Its a definite step forward, and the massive size of the - euphamistically called "Patch" - is evidence of the size of changes and work that went into getting this version on the streets. Its still not "Civ" from my perspective, I still miss "the epic journey" feeling, and it still lacks the overall feel a strategy game should have...

.... but its at least a start down that road. It seems Civ5 is a total rebuild nuts & bolts 'n all, and if so, fair enough, Rome wasnt built in a day as they say. The first Expansion Pack will be the true judge of how effective the Civ4 to Civ 5 changes are in maintaining the Franchise reputation - which no matter which camp anyone sits in, has taken a knock with that initial release....

So thumbs up so far, its moving the right way overall, and as many have already said - long ways to go yet.

Regards
Zy

I would be also curious about the time it takes between turns - same as before, slower, faster?

It takes a bit longer to start up, but I haven't really noticed anything about turn times - if anything, a bit faster.

Honour was nerfed slightly. Instead of x2 exp, it's now x1.5.

ICS works, 1 city uber-culture still works (though slowed down by nerfing of horsemen).

I have to say that I don't think I'm a fan of the fictitious landmarks. I'll live, but it kind of rubs me wrong.

I don't know...it seems awesome! I'm not very interested in things being aligned strictly to history/reality so this change seems like a very fun change!

I've started/closed/restarted Steam five times and the automatic download isn't working. I've checked my settings....I'm setup to auto-download any updates.

I just purchased the DLC as well and those started right up, downloaded and installed no problem. Still.....no patch update.

Wow that is something... I did the verify cache thingy... twice! and it found a missing file both times. So I did it yet again... and yet again it found a missing file! WOW!! just... amazing

I guess I'll reinstall the game tomorrow... How does one reinstall a steam game BTW???

Any chance you're in offline mode? You might be set to auto-download but did you slip Steam into offline mode at some point in the past?

If not, then just fire up the game. First thing is will do is check version number. If you need an update (and it sounds like you do), it will retrieve it for you. Might take a while to download, but this is normal behavior for Steam. When a patch is brand new, (and we're about 6 hours old right now?) and the Steam servers are really busy feeding the demand, sometimes patches don't auto-initiate for a few hours. This is a huge patch; it might take a while to get around to background updating. But - you can jump start it by just firing up the game.

Expert Steam tip: In Steam settings, you can change your region. I've heard people claim to get around busy servers for huge L4D2 and TF2 content updates by changing their region to, say, New Zealand or Eastern Europe; somewhere that it's 3 am when you're trying to update. Their servers are less busy, so less queue for the updates.

Honestly though, I'm a heavy Steam user and I live in the Western USA. I've never had to wait for an anticipated patch to kick right in as soon as I fire up Steam. Looking forward to testing this this evening on this monster update!

g/l.

does it work with saved games that have already been started?

You can uninstall it in the "add/remove programs" part of Control Panel, just like usual. Or, in Steam, right click on the game in your library and choose "properties", then "delete local content". Either way kicks off the same uninstaller.

BTW - I've never seen so many new Steam users in one place before. I know that a lot of you hate it; I had my reservations when I was new to the service too (Half-Life 2 was my first and only game from 2004-2007, now i have 70+ games in my library). I know it's a bitter pill to swallow after 2 decades of computer gaming w/o DRM. I don't mean to spark a debate, but I do want to encourage you to watch the Store pages starting December 20th. For the past 2 years, Steam has run LEGENDARY sales during the two weeks around Christmas and New Years. Last year, the format was: every game on sale (20% was normal), and 10 super-awesome deep discounts daily, rotating. The discounts that Valve offers makes a lot of the pain go away. :-)

Whilst you're removing El Dorado and Fountain of Youth, don't forget to also remove the following "gimmicky, unrealistic features":
- 99% of Civs that are playable from 4000BC
- food resources such as wheat, cows, sheep tied to a tile
- science victory (since the space mission to AC is fantasy)
- random maps, since you only want the Earth map strictly
- random resource allocations
- random start locations
- immortal leaders
- immortal great people
- immortal units
- visible technology tree
- instant diplomacy
- unit upgrading
- golden ages
- predictable population
- entire food growth mechanic
- 100% employment (since no country has every person being a useful member of society)
- time scaling

Actually come to think on it, your best option is just to simply delete the entire game (since the game itself in its entirety is a "gimmicky, unrealistic" representation of history).
