Worth the wait?

My patch makes no changes to the savegame format; I've intentionally kept it that way, so it's fully capable with 3.00 or 3.02/3.03 saves. And those will be compatible with 3.13, though there will be no backward compatibility.

Firing up a game right now, thanks for all the hard work and dedication btw.

I think it does, and if if you still disagree then feel free to go ahead and nitpick what "90%" means. You know, whatever. I'm kind of done with this whole controversy.

I use Solver's patch, and it's good, but my major 'issue' is that 2 of my games (of about 10 started) have been stopped by infinite loops. Solver's patch doesn't resolve this.

I'm not one of those impatient for them to have the new balance changes out quickly (which take time to adjust), but I wish they would have put out a smaller patch with just bugs fixed weeks ago.

Having just looked at the poll for the first time, I see that it will close on Nov. 13th of this year. I wonder if, perhaps, by that time we shall have had the patch available for long enough to form our opinions as to whether it was worth the wait, whatever its length, and thus to be able to vote on the basis of experience rather than pure guesswork.
And when did the wait start ? On the date of Alexman's somewhat premature announcement, or when work on the patch began, or when it was realised that another patch was necessary ?

LOL just install the latest GalCiv II patch and play that while you're waiting. Stardock has really, really improved that game.

No need to nitpick, the numbers are there.

90% ought to mean that 9 out of every 10 issues were fixed. So you're suggesting that Solver's patch fixes more than 270 of the 300+ lines of that changelog. Best I can tell, Solver's patch might have hit around 60 of them. So that means Solver's patch fixes closer to 20% of the issues, not 90%. An admirable fix, but not nearly the end all be all you claim.

I know what everyone is getting for Christmas. The 3.13 patch for Civ IV: BtS. It should be out after all the Q&A on turkeys is done.

Take a joke.

Whew, 17 pages and over 600 replies. I don't know what to say except "thank you" to alexman and Firaxis for working so hard on it, even if it is delayed a bit. I for one am still looking forward to it without complaining. :goodjob:

Come to think of it, isn't a late release kind of expected? What should've tipped you all off is that this thread is a poll, and the poll closes on November 12... :D

:joke:

Yeah thanks Firaxis for bustin' yer hump to get us those kewl new BTS wallpapers - collect the entire set!!! Those will tide me over while I don't play BTS...

Come on, UPDATE? Looks like tomorrow, but may not be? Definitely not tomorrow? Go eff ourselves? I should go load one of my BTS saves that HANGS at the end of turn, and see which one finishes first, the patch of the infinite BTS loop.

Jeez...

Someone sent me a savegame made using your patch. I was unable to open the save with the default dll, I had to install yours to get it to load properly. So I'm not entirely sure your patch is backwards compatible either, or, at least, my experience seems to suggest it might not be.

was it a password protected MP game or had the lock modified assets flag set? This would make it impossible...

sorry dupe post

Silly alexman, he broke one of the cardinal rules of developers: Don't give a firm date for patches...
I don't believe he did. People put words in his mouth, and then blamed him for it. How crappy is that?

And before we get started again, I'm not saying Firaxis and/or Take2 couldn't have handled it better.

Really? I've been playing quite a bit lately and haven't run into any loops. What exactly is happening? I'm curious, now.

No need to nitpick, the numbers are there.

90% ought to mean that 9 out of every 10 issues were fixed.
Or, it might mean that 90% of the effort. Not all issues are created equal. Some issues take 2 seconds to fix. Some take 2 weeks of solid work.

If the benchmark is simply # of issues, then we could "pad" one side or the other to skew the results. That would end up in misleading conclusions.

An admirable fix, but not nearly the end all be all you claim.
Never said it was an "end all".

What I was saying is that, if you have NOT installed his patch, and you are having issues, then stop  and install it! You'll find that you're having less issues.

There. No numbers to nitpick.

So you mean you'd rather have the graphics folk, who probably know little to nothing about complex programming, to work on the source code of the game instead? Good God I can only imagine what nasty bugs would be introduced then!!!!

It was probably made with locked assets or had the admin password, making it only possible to load using the same files as what the game was created with. I definitely didn't make changes to the save format, and I did load lots of 3.02 saves with my patch.

As for infinite loop issues with my patch - yes, there is one infinite loop issue that I know about but didn't fix. On the upside, it's a rare issue and, unlike the fixed ones, shouldn't come up often, most games should be free of it.

I was just dreaming:
What if a moderater came to this thread, removing all messages about the release date because they are off-topic and only leaving all messages about the 3.13 change list, as the thread name suggests...
This thread would be reduced to 3 pages again.
Wouldn't that be nice?

I keep coming to this site periodically to see if the update is available (don't want 3.03), and...

I keep getting excited because I see X.13 listed!

Then I have to temper my excitement...that's a Warlords patch, 2.13, not the BtS patch, 3.13.

I just wish we'd get a real date, or a reason for the delay, or some word. Two deadlines have now passed. I would even be happy with "it will take a few weeks" or some other arbitrary rough timeline. The annoying thing is that we were given an implied date, then we were given a fairly specific range of a couple of days, and both have passed. I understand things come up, but if you were wrong, then admit to it. I am fine with arbitrary projections like "in a few weeks", but the most recent projection we got was the beginning of this week.

Time to get back to my game. TTFN!

Sam

Just as a note:

Under the Civlopedia description for the Great Scientist unit, it states that you need two or more great people for a golden age. I didn't check the other great people, but would expect to see the same.

Hahahah, it's still not out? That's 2 weekends since it was first announced, and one little post would clear up confusion? I expect a certain poster from Firaxis has been told to shut his mouth by his bosses.
