i was reading a current newsweek magazine (or time) cant remember, and i came to an interesting ad, it said taht PETA (organization for animal rights etc) slowed down research against posible cures for many deseases and disorders, it also said tat they paid ratical groups to destroy labs and research in their (free the animals) movement so what is ur opinion? are these animal protection groups good or bad?

in my opinion research is ok, as lng as it is somewhat realistic (not research on an endangared species or something)

Realistic in their goals? Nahhh. But maybe a necessary evil. I tend to think that radicals like them swing the middle of the spectrum a bit higher. But who knows.

Its sad to see that a once very respected orginization has now become a group of crackpots. The've done good things in the past but now they are pushing it, sorry PETA but your losing your ethics, and when that happens you have less repsect than the PTA

Note: Perfection apologizes for the lame pun, but he just couldn't resist

When it comes to concocting cures for serious ailments I can usually look the other way when a monkey or mouse is injected with an antedote or disease that may very well cause it hours of seething pain until the moment of its death. I'm certain the lifetime it spent growing up in a cage no larger than a folded newspaper wasn't too fun either.

But animal testing for cosmetics is just plain evil. The only "good" that comes out of it is yet another product with no real value beyond what the marketing teams can tack onto it. Make-up hasn't changed in decades, only their bottles and labels have.

"We put pets much like your own through agony and despair. Not because we're evil. But because you're worth it!"

If ever an alien power comes across this planet and its "best and brightest" species, I can think of no argument as to why they shouldn't apply the same practices on us as we do on our own furry friends.

To best understand PETA and its members, think of how you would react were major corporations testing their prototypes on human babies. This may sound ridiculous for many, but for a lot of these radicals it reflects the values they place on the animals they're trying to save.

They way the protest is now becoming criminal, the do things that hurt peoples lives to get thier point accross, can they debate and protest, sure. Can they do illegal activities to aid in it? Thats where I have to say "NO!!!"

Peta is delicious with falafel inside of it or dipped in hummus.

That's why I support animal testing. I'd rather have safe consumer products at the expense of lab rats than dangerous products at the expense of human life.

I am an advocate of animal rights, long-time vegetarian, and I think PETA is a group of idiots. They are bad for their own cause, try to push their beliefs violently on others, and place common sense and common good aside to push their own agenda. They have gone the way of eco-fascists and over-zealous pro-lifers - they lose all principle to hold onto their one. I think they are just insecure and bored, have found their cause, and are now excited. The perfect recipe for terrorism...

And for kicks, did you see last week where they raided a fur-free fashion show to spout their beliefs? Now there's an interesting and embarassing way to get in the headlines. In government this is called "poor intelligence", I guess this is just "lack of"...

A comedian pointed out how Peta are always wrecking ladies in furs but they never pour paint on bikers in leather...

PETA doesn't oppose or endorse abortion. Much of their member base, from what I have noticed, is staunchly on the far left, and would very likely support Roe vs. Wade.

He said "they have gone the way of" overzealous pro-lifers... you know the kind that terrorize traumatized women and murder doctors and try to block access to medical care. He is saying PETA is like that.

I too am an Animal rights supporter and veg, and I agree 100% with you Sanaz.

It's people like them who turn people off the real issues. When I was a member of an animal rights group up here, I was disgusted with the behaviour of alot of the people. Many just seem to want a cause and don't really have a real grasp on what AR is all about.

I focused my action on simply discussing the issues with people who showed an interest or curiosity, and listened to their viewpoint with an open mind myself. Personnaly, I think I acheived more in those 5 years than PETA has in their entire history.

Sounds like consensus here.

The fanatical supporters of a cause are bad for the mainstream who hold that cause dear.

This is becoming a common theme throughout the threads.

That's because ladies in furs don't have the habit of tearing your arms out of their sockets.

I can attest to you firsthand that animal research is not inhuman. There are so many regulations, reviews, and revamps of animal treatment (not just dogs and monkeys, but even mice) that it's almost cruel. It took me 3 months to get my proposal approved, and I'm not even doing anything remotely unusual!
I can also assure you that we take great care in treating the animals well, giving them anesthesia and pain medicines, making sure they are not overcrowded, etc. And when it does come time to sacrifice them, we do it as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Well it isn't very pleasant to think about.
Animal testing of:

Medicine- okay, I suppose... who knows I might need the medicine some day.

Cosmetics- hell no.

And I'd rather be earless than have an ear grown off a rat's back!
