PH05: THe Honorable Emperor Spaceman

And by later you all realised I meant later today I'm sure. Report to come tonight!
Heh. Since you're in Australia, and I'm in the U.S.A., I realized that you meant "far, far later than you plan to be awake tonight." Although it's actually tomorrow night. Or is it last ni...this morning?...no, wait...it's tonight here, but tomorrow evening there, so...aw, crap. I'll just read it when I wake up.

Note for the humor-impaired: The foregoing joke is not meant to perpetuate the stereotype that Americans are completely ignorant of geography, however true that stereotype may be. In spite of my nationality, I understand time zones, the International Date Line, and could even work out the correct time in Sydney if I cared to do the math. Which I don't. Thank you for your attention. And now back to your regularly-scheduled thread.

Hello George, with +7 food, its time to meet Mr :whipped:.

I start up another worker.

For those wondering if there was anything near the horses over east. Yes there is!

We know how to make round things. Can we learn how to make cereal bowls next?

Well hello there handsome ;)

Washington worker --> warrior

Welcome to New York. Its a way away but we need to claim some territory here before Brennus does. Fill in the gaps later.

Washington warrior --> barracks (change to granary in 2)

Brennus is off to claim some of our territory .

Do you have any relatives in Transylvannia?

We learn how to make cereal bowls but me write not much goodly.

Well that sucks! Culture up New York and it should flip.

And 15 is up. The post game analysis!

Let the granary complete and whip 2 settlers one after the other methinks. We need to completely block Brennus off.

The whipping of a library, cottaging of flood plains and horsies is all good.

We need to get all of this before Brennus. First city should go close to his on the east as possible. Anyone good at dotmaps???

Writing due in 7, I'd head straight for Alphabet and try to pick up a bonanza in trades.

turn 2:
Captain Obvious says we're last in tech.

ph051captainobvioushd2.jpg

Brennus, apparently, is a force to be reckoned with.

IBT: Woodsman 2 warrior kills barb archer.

Turn 3:
New York: Warrior -> Granary
Warrior on south end (hereafter known as Rambo) kills a damaged barb archer.

ph051rambofirstbloodbi9.jpg

Rambo: first blood part 1

Turn 4:
Washington: Granary -> Settler

Rambo is a little too brave, so he gets Woodsman I.

ph051barbconventionam0.jpg

Barbarian convention

IBT: Rambo lays the smackdown on a barbarian unit.

ph051rambofightia3.jpg

Rambo: first blood part 2

Turn 5:
Rambo needs 6 turns to heal.

Turn 6:
Well things aren't looking too good for Rambo... so he escapes. (BOOOOO!)

ph051ramboretreatsbi6.jpg

I thought you were a one-man army!

Turn 7:
Research: Writing -> Alphabet
Whip Settler for 2 pop, queue Settler #2.
Rambo rests up for 5 turns.

Turn 8:
Washington: Settler -> Settler
Barbarian city pops up in a very ideal spot near Washington.
(Excuse me, don't we have archery?)

ph051idealbarbjointmt4.jpg

Let's case this joint!

(to be continued)

Turn 9:
Dance around a barb archer.
Anyone want to try to flip the Jewish Holy City?

ph051jewishlu2.jpg

If Brennus were smart, he would convert to No State Religion

IBT: Barb archer moves on?

Turn 10:
Found Boston as close as possible to Tolosa, as advised.

ph051bostonfoundedzz8.jpg

Hardly ideal, but a Library would be handy.

Start chopping forests at Washington and New York.

IBT: Barb archer attacks our "not-Rambo" warrior and dies.

Turn 11:
Rambo moved to fog bust duty.

Turn 12:
New York: Granary -> Library (what are we without Mysticism anyway)
Library is for cultural pressure on Tolosa and to get the horses soon.

Turn 14:
Washington: Settler -> Barracks

Turn 15:
Washington: Barracks (only put in 1 turn to prevent decay) -> Warrior

Barb city near Peter on visual. Warrior guy was fortified, please move him as you see fit.

ph051barbsnearpeterat0.jpg

Absorb XP like a sponge, or die trying?

Analysis...

We have a new Settler. Where to put him to block Brennus?

ph051blockmapww8.jpg

The BLOCK map (for proof of the clams' existence, please see the Rambo retreats screenshot)

Here's what America looks like right now...

ph051americakt1.jpg

We got into the time machine together, something must have gone wrong...

Alphabet in 23 but it should be faster once Washington grows.
During my turns, have Open Borders with Peter and Louis.

Enjoy! And I hope I didn't mess up too much.

phew ~ i really can't believe no one went for archery. Let's cross our fingers and hope no barb axes or even a couple of archers show up and head for our cities.

I was also surprised to see New York founded one off the coast. I might've settled 1 NW to get one more FP and access to the sea.

perhaps that last settler should go up to the north for those clams to try and cut down on maintenance cost since it looks like we're just breaking even at 60% now.

otherwise, good turns!! :goodjob:

that library in NYC looks like it can be whipped next turn, right??

Ozbenno was planning to block Brennus from expanding east with the power of REX and possibly flip Tolosa in the future so I kinda went with it.

What do you think of that plan? I know maintenance will skyrocket, but it may be worth a shot. The reason (Oz said) NYC was founded there was to grab as much land (yes, land) as possible, even though personally I also don't approve of 1-tile-from-shore-cities. I would settle at site 2, that will properly lock Brennus out of the right side as well as the new barb city.

re: blocking Brennus ~ what are we blocking him from? I could understand if there was a large patch of ground over to the East that was unoccupied, but Japan and Germany are over that way. I think we could flip Tolosa w/those two cities if we pushed culture hard for right now.

Plus, check out that mt range S of Boston: Brennus should be cut off now as it is!

Good turns, everyone.

@Pholk - I think there's a diagonal pass through the mountains south of Boston. Normally, I wouldn't care about Brennus settling some crappy tundra cities for us to snap up later, but since we can't declare on him...it could cramp us if we're not careful. Yeah, Toku is off to the east, but there's plenty of empty land in between, and the less competition, the better.

I'm not sure there's a right answer here - it pains me to burn a settler for a lousy city, and we can't block Brennus unless we close borders, and we're not NEARLY ready for a war yet, but getting hemmed in doesn't appeal either, so...um...yeah, like that.

Other observations:
  • I probably would have put NY on the coast, too, but it looks like we're going to have our hands full on this continent for the foreseeable future, so no biggie. Washington and that barb city to the east can build navy when we need it later, and NY has plenty of yummy land to work. Being one tile off the river will hurt us a bit, too - having the fresh-water bonus would have offset the unhealthiness from the FPs. (BTW, Pholk, founding 1NW would actually get us 4 FPs, versus the current 5, if I'm reading the screenshots right.)
  • Thank goodness Brennus is Hindu. If he switches to Judaism, we'll have two big problems:
    1. We'll never take Tolosa by culture, and we'd have to worry about losing our own cities to his. As it is, it's going to take a while, even if we push a couple culture buildings in NY/Boston - NY needs 3 border pops before it even starts adding culture to Tolosa's tile.
    2. Judaism is most likely to spread to US, since it's so close. And we want to provoke Brennus into at least one war sometime (so we can take some nearby cities, including the Jewish Holy City, of course). Hard to do if we're both Jewish, but fairly easy if he's Hindu and we're not - Brennus is one of the zealots, IIRC. If we're really lucky, he'll build the shrine for us in Tolosa.
  • Regardless, glad to see a culture building in NY, because WE NEED HORSES to make chariots to hold off those nasty barbs. Whip that library and get a worker over there to hook up horses pronto. And I suppose he'll have to road all the way over to Washington, too, unless we plan to get Sailing sometime soon. Maybe trade for it, when Alphabet is in?

Got a little lost on counting turns as I am not used to normal speed. Hope this was ten?

Anyway, I rushed a library in NY, started pasture for horses.

Fourth city founded near beavers. to cut off brennus. He's coming with a settler so we should close borders. We can build a city near wine and one or two more.

I do plan to write a longer report next time, but I am a little pressed for time.

Anyway let's see how this evolves.

alright, nice turns ~ even in warlords w/their new bonus, i don't think i've ever been looking forward to Chariots so much. Let's cross our fingers for Iron!!

OK possibly New York was a bit of a :smoke: but the reasons were (as pointed out) to grab as much land as possibly to limit Brennus. As we can't declare on him, if he started aggressively settling towards us our future prospects are bleak. I debated over the sea or landlocked and went the current position for the 5 over 4 flood plains (and as Washington is no longer financial, tghe sea isn't as great as before), forgot about the fresh water health bonus though .

The reason I didn't go for Archery is that on Emporer, the rush to Alphabet is paramount, you spend time on techs you can later trade for, the more chance you'll get beaten there. It is a risk :).

That's fine about NYC ~ i'm not too concerned   and i was wrong about the FP anyway...Brenuss' borders need to be a different color so i can see them on an FP.

I know grabbing Alpha early can really help you out as the AI puts such a low priority on it (did Blake ever change that aspect of the AI??), but i think we lucked by being cut off for the most part from spawning barbs. All we've got are a few peasants with clubs right now; even a couple archers could clean us out ~

edit: that is to say, definitely stay w/Alphabet, but it could've gotten real nasty w/o our friendly shields...er, neighbors

How are we doing defense-wise?

Brennus seemed to be getting restless, running around with chariots. If we closed him in he might want to break free... in which case we're screwed.

What's this? I don't check in for a day, and all of a sudden 2000 years have passed!

Aggressive city placement is the name of the game, but damn, it's a razor's edge! I hope that fiend Brennus doesn't get too fiesty before we can get an army together.

I'm guessing CoL is a priority, but what is the tech plan now? I mean this more in terms of military... if we are going to give Brennus a touch up.

Let's focus on defense and get some chariots together. Whip and Chop I guess at NY to create 2-3 chariots fast. Then we connect the capital to the horses and we do the same there. This should be able to create a 4-6 chariot army fast for the barbarian city and defense.

If Brennus does attack we continue to chop and whip chariots to beat him back and thank him for his rex efforts, and holy city :)
