PH05: THe Honorable Emperor Spaceman

yeah, chariots for sure, but Iron Working needs to come sooner rather than later.

I agree with Pholkhero. IW before CoL - the courthouses won't help if we lose the cities in the meantime. Chariots will hold off the barbs for now, but if an AI starts making swords, or even spears, before we get axes, we're cooked.

And I still think we should look for a chance to trade for Sailing, just for trade routes/connecting cities, but it's not worth researching ourselves ATM.

so, Alpha > trade a bunch > IW sounds good to me. CoL seems, to me at least, worthless in the near-term. It's certainly not something we *need* right now. It may be a waste, but we need to get Mysticism soon, too, and get cracking w/Monuments and :whipped:

I also want to bring up the issue of the patch ~ i'm leaning towards making it part and parcel of this game. just from what i'm seeing, a lot of Warlords issues will be fixed (which is needed), but it also looks like it's going to be HARDER now that they've incorporated Blake's AI mod into it. we should prepare.
I remembered this post this morning. When I first saw it, I thought it might be a bad idea (I figure this is going to be hard enough without introducing a better AI and new rules partway through). But I figured I'd wait and see.

Then it hit me. Patching the game would make this an SG for the AI, too!

Can't you just see log entries popping up from the AI:

550AD: Brennus says, "WTH? Who put a city there?"
550AD: Tokugawa says: "We should have whipped that Granary in Osaka three turns ago, when it was 2 pop. Now it's just a waste."
550AD: Bismark says: "You mean we've had five workers doing nothing but build roads for the last 50 turns?"

Kidding aside - I do wonder about this move. Anyone who's playing any other SGs gets faced with a choice about which one to drop out of (unless there's some way to set up the patch as a mod? :crazyeye:)

I'm sure myst will be found thru trade, and as for CoL, I suppose I was thinking of how far we'd expand, but the whip is also a fair way to limit maintenance, I suppose.

@ Zophos: it'd be like playing with an AI Greyfox :rotfl:

@ Sweet ~ i just hate to waste a trade on myst but it'll probably be faster that way

re: Patch ~ well, there's always the old fashioned dual-Warlords option to folks; have one folder for the old WL, and one for the patched version. i was doing it for vanilla w/161 and 152

edit: the patch is also the reason i'm holding up PH06 (other than i have no good ideas :D )

I've just caught up on DMAW01!
Yeah, I was just generally remembering these sorts of posts from, say, PH02, but I didn't know if anyone else would make the connection. :mischief:

Yeah, and that's just the start of it :D it's always great to have Fox follow my turns :)

Nothing like a constant reminder of how much i suck  does wonders for my self-esteem

edit: is there a game going on here somewhere??

Then we won't patch until this game is over? Or... hey pholk, can you teach us how to have an unpatched version?

Augh, I'm a moron. I left my laptop at work, and my warlords CD was in it. I've got vanilla installed on my desktop, but not warlords. I'll have to swap out until Monday.

Ok...so that means Sweetums is up, right? Put down the car and get to work, Jack!

Just to get a bit Greyfox on yo asses - why does the sheep pasture have a road on it, but the road isn't connected to anything?! And whose idea was it to stick that mountain range in there, it's just in the way... ridiculous!

Anyway, inherited turn 975BC
I decided to whip those disgruntled loafers in New York into a shiny new chariot. And that takes care of that.

Turn 1 950BC
I seriously consider whipping the settler in Washington, but I want to see where Brennus takes his first... if he is heading toward the copper, I'll never get there first anyway. Instead I whip a worker :D The Great Wall is built by someone.

Turn 2 925BC
Yep, B's settler moves off west... damn him!

Turn 3 900BC
Our first chariot rolls out of NY.. Somebody get that worker out of the queue!! Well, I lost B's settler. The little bugger is faster than our warriors. Found clams near the copper, which makes it far more viable.

Turn 4 875BC
Found that settler again.
Civ4ScreenShot0003.JPG
2 combatI chariots.. I feel a little ill. Take to the trees, little warriors!
Civ4ScreenShot0002.JPG

Turn 5 850BC
Civ4ScreenShot0004.JPG
Back stabbing bastard! 2 warriors left in Boston, and our 1st chariot just survives after taking 1 of his down. Judaism spreads to Philly.

Turn 6 825BC
Unexpectedly, our warrior takes his other injured chariot out.. there are always more coming, tho.

Turn 7 800BC
Our first chariot dies, but luckily a reinforcement finally arrives to finish Brennus' chariot off... won't he ever give up?
Civ4ScreenShot0007.JPG

Turn 8 775BC
Brennus' attackers keep on rollin.

Turn 9 750BC
This could get nasty.
Civ4ScreenShot0008.JPG

Turn 10 725BC
We held out, in the end, just one warrior and 2 chariots left in Boston.

Turn 11 700BC
Finally a chance to breathe!! Here is where that settler was heading
Civ4ScreenShot0009.JPGCiv4ScreenShot0010.JPG

Turn 12 675BC
What I can only describe as a schoolboy error from Brennus, as he allows an injured warrior some pillage time :D Whipped the barracks in NY. Tolosa has walls, but I approach to see what can be done.
Civ4ScreenShot0012.JPG

Turn 13 650BC
Troops gather.

Turn 14 625BC
The chariots take an underdog stab at Tolosa, one wins, one withdraws, and there is only one archer left!

Turn 15 600BC
We take The Holy Toloso!! I lost two >10xp chariots, but I felt it would be better to drive home the advantage while it existed.

Thoughts

I am embarrassed to say that I reloaded. If I'd continued on the library building path, Brennus would've taken us down badly! After 4 turns or so, I had another go. The main difference was that I got a few warriors out of Boston and Philly.

Brennus had about 5 turns where he didn't attack, and I assume this means he was building chariots, and I've seen a few up north, with 1 outside NY now, so expect a counter attack. Quite a few more troops are needed to protect the borders. We also got a GG this turn, he's in Washington. In addition to this, alpha was discovered 2 turns ago (it took ages because I was concentrating on military), I didn't trade our monpoly, but we can get maths, sailing, hunting, meditation, and masonary for it. We are currently researching IW. Brennus still refuses to talk, and Toku has gained a large lead. Lastly, a settler is on the north coast heading to NY, which I intended to settle near the copper.

You shouldn't've reloaded :nono: but now that it's done, it's done. and imageshack is pretty easy to use, esp. w/the links provided under the "advanced reply" option: just upload the image, copy the last link, click on that icon with the mt and sun, and paste the link ~ simple :D

Shall i merge the GG for the Academy since we won't get the chance after the patch?

also, there's no save

Naughty, naughty. :spank:

A better way to handle those "Oh, sh-t! This is bad" moments is to stop your turnset early, post "Oh, sh-t! This is bad" and the turns so far, and ask for help from your teammates. You'd be surprised what folks can help you pull out of. Not me, of course - I suck - but some of these guys are pretty good.

However, as Pholk said: Water under the bridge, bygones, spilt milk, &c. Upward and onward! Once we have the save, that is... :mischief:

Heck if I know. I guess, after the patch, we won't need GGs to unlock Heroic Epic anymore. I've usually used the first GG as a Warlord (typically a Medic III something-or-other), but now I'll have to go re-think it all.
