Please Read: Welcome to the C-IV GOTM

I am a late comer to this CIV party, just having purchased the game from Steam a couple weeks ago. I am now thoroughly re-addicted to Civ (I am a I, II, and Colonization [woot] veteran, somehow missed out on III), and am already kicking myself because I know I am going to download Warlords and BtS, and I could have saved 10 bucks if I had just gotten the package deal... anyway, I was wondering if I have to do anything special to keep my vanilla nice and vanilla for CIV GOTM purposes, or can I just install the e-packs as I normally would and play it that way? I like vanilla, but I want to hear Sid's voice!

Anyway, time to go stock up on some coffee for all these xOTM I now must lose (I am a Noble-level player,).

Btw, the HOF mods are cool!

Hi

If you don't have BtS installed, you actually *have to* modify vanilla for GOTMs.

BtS 3.13 modifies vanilla, and our start files are all configured on the assumption that this modification has occurred. So there are a couple of files that you need to swap to emulate what the BtS installation does. Details are here.

Thank you Ainwood and AlanH, I am glad I read your posts before I started the GOTM. I think I will just go ahead and cough up the bucks for BtS. I don't play many scenarios, so I can't see any reason to get Warlords at this point, since Firaxis' info says all the actual Warlords gameplay content is incorporated in BtS.

I'm returning to Civ4 after a long hiatus. I just picked up warlords and BtS and recently started the current BtS GOTM. My question is how do I configure/start the game in order to play the vanilla GOTM? Is 3.13.001 all I need or do I also need 1.74.002? Also, where should I place my vanilla saved game, in the vanilla directory or BtS? Any help would be appreciated.

Each version requires it's own version of the HOF mod, such as:
Also, where should I place my vanilla saved game, in the vanilla directory or BtS?

It doesn't matter where you place your saves, so long as you can find the correct ones to submit to GOTM site.

Ok, I installed 1.74.002, started vanilla, loaded the 1.74 mod and tried to open the current GOTM but got booted to desktop with a message:

The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in the mod folder have not been changed.

I'm stuck. My civ4 game is retail while warlords/bts were purchased off Steam, if that helps.

I recommend that you try swapping the DLLs, as described on the HoF page.

There are some people who report having to change the latest vanilla and Warlords DLLs even if they have installed BtS. Maybe this applies to you as well. It is also possible that the Steam BtS installer doesn't update the Vanilla DLL in the same way as the DVD installer.

Can someone just tell me the name of the folder to put the file in? I have downloaded HOF and all the updates for Civ4.

I've tried putting it in the folder that shows Quick and Auto...didn't work.
Put it auto....didn't work
Put it in quick....

Tried just clicking on it from the folder too. But I get an error message that I need to put a disk in Drive D. The Civ4 play disk is already in there.

Sorry, just very frustrated.

Put it in Single - it's a Single Player game.

PS. I was assuming you are talking about the starting save. That's a file with a name like "civ4gotm30contender.Civ4SavedGame".

If you are referring to the HoF Mod then you need to run the installer.

If you don't have BtS installed then you will also need to swap the DLL files as described on the HoF Mod page.

I put it in the folder title single and then started Civ4. Went to 'single' and clicked on load game and it isn't listed there.

Something else need to be done before hand? Do I perhaps run it from the folder titled single and not from the game itself?

Does it go in the BTS Single Save folder, or the Civ4 single Save folder , or Warlords or something?

It has a different icon than the other saves I have in my BTS Save Single folder.

Wait, do I hae to have some dumbed down version of the game to play this?? I have BTS installed and patched. I have the HOF mod for BTS installed so it is 3.(something), but read it had to be 1.74?

Am I needing to use my Civ4 vanilla disk to play these or something?

If all the above is correct, are there GOTM that are for those of us who have BTS and want to fully use it?

Thanks!

Yes, in order to run Civ4 vanilla you have to load up the Civ4 vanilla disk ... unless, like me, you bought it all on one Civ4 Complete disk. That's probably why you got the disk error message when you double clicked the start file. There are three different game versions.

You need HoF Mod 1.74.002 to play a vanilla GOTM (see directly above, or on the game release page, or in the Saves Available post).

Perhaps you have missed the introduction information for these competitions on the GOTM web site?

Question:
during the last year i've played only 1 or 2 GotM IIRC.
I'm usually playing for HoF, and often i arrive too late on some interesting game.

My last games was very low on rank, so the question:
am i eligible to submit an adventurer game?

I cannot remember when i was in the first half of the rank, but probably it was looong time ago.

You have 15 published GOTMs altogether, 3 Civ3 and 12 Civ4. Your last entry was BOTM 3 where you won a green ambulance. You were in the top half in 6 of your Civ4 games - the last of which was WOTM 8, a year or so ago.

If you feel the need to play Adventurer in order to get back into the competition then feel free to do so. Remember that you suffer a score penalty and can't win any awards if you do so.

Thanks Alan for your answer.
Yes, i'll probably restart to submit some GotM using the adventurer save, just to take again confidence with barbs and with GotM games.
Or maybe not, i'll see.

Hi all!

Is a mod that changes Nuclear Plants mechanics allowed? Namely, what I'm thinking about is something along the lines with 1:10000 chance of meltdown, 1 unhappy face in city.
