So if the British flag is the Scottish flag and the English flag, why a different shade of blue?

So what's with the red X and the white cross in the UK's flag? Just thought it looked nicer than a red cross on a white X alone?

It comes from the colour of the uniforms worn by British naval officers, but they wore that particular colour because it matched the Jack, so I guess it amounts to the same thing.

It's because of Ireland
In theory, although there's scarce record of the St. Patrick's satire being used as an Irish symbol before 1800, so I'd say that the addition is partly aesthetic.
 
Also Wales is not on the flag because it was legally considered a part of England from the 16th century.
 
I was gonna say it looks like the Golgothan to me... :lol:
