I'm so mad about this I can't even think straight. So here's some info, but first you need to know that the event was 100% legal (refer to second quote, it's more interesting). I highly recommend you read all of this.

Dance party broken up by police in Utah, USA

SWAT teams shut down the music.About 90 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies broke up what they said was a rave party on public and private property in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork canyon, an hour outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday (5:30 Sunday UTC).

According to the county, the Sheriff's Office had been investigating similar parties since the beginning of the season. In a press release from the Sheriff's Office in Utah County, the department claims that previous allegations of sexual abuse at other raves, as well as various firearm and theft violations, were reason for the investigation. The release continues to state that the proper permit was not obtained before the party started.

More audio reportsArmed with assault rifles and tear gas, the police used dogs to sweep the crowd for narcotics. At least one helicopter was used in the operation. The scale of the police response was apparently due to the ineffectiveness of a smaller force used in the previous "Sequence Five" rave. Prior to dispersing the partiers, several police informants had reportedly infiltrated the rave and observed widespread illegal activities.

Police clear out the event and question attendees. The promoter says the party took place on private property, named Child's Ranch, with express permission from the owner. The property owner has apparently had at least one previous run-in with police over a similar event. Utah County requires a permit, bond and county commission approval for all gatherings with more than 250 people present. According to a DJ at the event, "They presold 700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total." He added that by the time police arrived "the crowd was about 1500 people thick".

The police have publicly stated that only a permit from the health department was obtained, and that a Utah mass gathering permit was needed. The promoters deny this allegation. They have stated that they had the required permit, and have given a permit number (# 2005-11). Officials also claim that the party had spilled over onto public land. Police reported in local press that more than 60 arrests were made for weapons offenses, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, underage drinking, drug possession and distribution, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, and disorderly conduct. Officers claim to have found cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, mushrooms, alcohol, and large amounts of drug paraphernalia. Some of the drugs may include those confiscated from partiers by security guards.

Amateur video from the scene shows a number of SWAT police (estimates are at 90) screaming orders at the DJs to "Shut it down now!" and yelling at others to "get out now, or I'll kick your ass in jail." Armed police are also seen tackling a number of rave-goers, and it is unclear from the video footage whether these attendees attempted to attack the police. Based on the low resolution, automatic lighting adjustment, and low audio quality, the video appears to have been taken with an amateur device.

A first hand account from a DJ booked to play at the party stated that while police were arresting a man accused of narcotic possession, the suspect was beaten to the ground and continually "kicked in the ribs" by four armed "soldiers" dressed in camouflage. According to the account, nobody resisted the policemen, but tear gas was thrown at the partiers as they attempted to leave. The DJ also states that police were attempting to confiscate video equipment, but an amateur video has still surfaced on the internet (see sources below).

Several partygoers felt they should have the right to attend a rave where drugs are being used, so long as they don't personally use them. "While it may be true that some individuals choose to take drugs at said events like this, myself as well as many others choose to go for the music. Just like anything, you have bad apples, but you shouldn't cut down the tree," said one attendee. "Raves are not the only musical gatherings where drugs are used and distributed," said another.

Other partygoers felt that the use of force in the shutdown was excessive - numerous eyewitness accounts by concertgoers describe people being beaten, tasered, or attacked with dogs. One account from an attendee, identified as "Colby", states:

I saw at least two people being beaten on the ground while barking, snarling dogs are held just a few feet from them. Weapons were being pointed at unarmed, peaceful civilians. A friend of mine was forced at gunpoint to put his hands on his head and turn around, because he asked if he could get his things from the tent."

Utah County sheriff's Sergeant Darren Gilbert said a 17-year-old girl was found overdosed on ecstasy, and was treated and released to her parents. Multiple lawsuits are being threatened against the city. According to an advertisement for the event, an attorney was present at the party. The local sheriff is scheduled to appear on Utah TV following a number of complaints being sent to TV stations and the police.
Btw the "ecstascy overdoser" was treated "on site" (according to another source) which is utter garbage. As another dude pointed out on another forum, she probably freaked out more than anything else.

Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold 700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the flyers on them to promote in local shops.

So, we got to the show around 11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was all outdoors, in a valley surrounded by huge mountains. They had an amazing light show flashing on to a mountain behind the site, the sound was booming, the crowd was about 1500 people thick and everything just seemed too good to be true really. Well...

At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage talking with someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of the mountain tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to the person I was with. I wasn't far off.

The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops" rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that everyone "get the **** out of here or go to jail". This is where it got really sticky.

No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs raiding the crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who obviously had some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of them on 1), and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees in his back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000 kids trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A can of ****ing TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are running and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad scene.

Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of other accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some candy raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters mouth..

- One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.

- The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.

- The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said "get the **** out of here right now."

Now.. let's get the facts straight here.

This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told them they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the security guards for possession.

Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her, but made her leave her own property!!!

Don't get it twisted, this is all going down in probably THE most conservative state in the USA. And this is scary.. a gross violation of our civil liberties. The police wanted this party shut down, so they made it happen. Even though everything about this event was legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this show and did everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it taken away from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an agenda.

This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in person. I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really necessary?

This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our music scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I think that's BULL****!

The system ****ed up last night... They broke up a party that was 100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people there at the same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to file with their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved.

I'm sure some pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon. I'll make sure to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police State of America at work.

I don't doubt that drugs were being used by the people at that party.

Yeah I have. That was bigger than this event, but similar. Instead of 90 cambatants and 1500 ravers it was 850 combatants and 5000 ravers.

I found out about CzechTek learning about this, and while I'm pretty angry about that, at least CzechTek made the seems to be having politcal reprocussions and is making the news (didn't popularity of the Prime Minister drop 33%, or down 33 of 100 points). This both strikes closer to home while happening in my dear America, which I thought represented freedom.

You'd think the people planning this raid would do some research and see how CzechTek backfired...

Feel free to post any information on that--I don't think it even made CFC pages (link me if it did).

I don't plan to shed any tears over it

Happy and Speedy, did you even watch the video and read any of it or did you just skim a couple of lines and say

"OK, rave party, drugs, police broke it up, some violence. Well, that's that!"

I read a large part of it, decided that it was just hippies* getting a good old fashioned beat down, and decided that I am siding with the police on this one.

*or ravers or whatever, same difference

About this 'rave' nonsense. I saw the video. Those 'fascists' seem to be pretty laid back. Except for one or two isolated incidents where theyre subduing people, for the most part the police are just walking around. They calmly went up to the DJs and shut down the music. Based on the article, I expected to see them rush the DJs, start beating them over the head and smashing the equipment. As far as the helicopters, and the cops being heavily armed, well, they were confronting 1500 or more angry people, cant say I blame them. This is what has you so mad you cant think straight? God forbid governments should attempt to enforce the law, and prevent thousands of spaced out idiots from completely taking over an area so they can do drugs and listen to their crappy music. Moral of the story? Dont break the law, stay away from people who do, and you'll never have problems with the police.

I do not mind raves being dispersed due to noise pollution (that being, anything more than a whisper), but excessive use of force authorised by a police state is equally disturbing.

The SWAT guys weren't doing anything awful. I was half expecting explosions and flashbangs but all I saw was a couple of them walk up to the DJ and ask him to shut off the music. Other than that they were handcuffing some people so they have to bring them to the ground (especially if you're resisting). I didn't see anything wrong with the physical actions taken by the police. Whether they should have been there (the whole permit deal), I am not sure off but I'll give the cops the benefit of the doubt.

"Turn the music off now or I'll beat your ass" is not polite. Neither is having guns thrust in your face.

The event was 100% legal. Men and women were beaten, and cameras (video, cellphone, normal) were confiscated immediately.

There were no laws being enforced. It was a show OF force. Hardly anyone there was breaking the law.

Events like these have been shut down with 3 cops, one fire Marshall, etc. No one turned or was likely to turn violent, and yet teargas was launched into the compliant folk there, dogs unleashed, and anyone insisting on videotaping the event was beaten.

They were not "one or two isolated events" of police subduing people. The video was hardly on for much time at all, before soldiers/police/whoever were on all sides of the camera man telling him to turn it off.

Hygro, if no laws were being broken, why do you think the municipality went to so much effort and expense to break up the rave?

I have little appreciation for drug-fuelled activities, but I condemn the violation of these kids' rights.

They cite drug deals. But those are not condoned by the promotors who put on the show--cars were searched (in fact the security were arrested for drug possession :wallbash: because they successfully confiscated drugs). But then why aren't rock and hip-hop concerts shut down with soldiers? Why isn't my public school, one of the best in my state, shut down? After all, people are selling and using drugs regularly in those places. So what's the difference?

I hate to make this a partisan issue, because its not, but Rave venues are blatantly favored by leftwingers. In such a right-wing state, where republicans ou who is to be surprised they issue a show of force the day before a protest against the president.

Promoter- "I want to hold a rave, what paperwork do I need?"
City - "You need X."
Promoter- Get's X.
City- Shuts down event. You didn't have the proper Y paperwork.

Bet this is the scenario that unfolds in the end. This way the city continues to shut down these events because they don't want them. A sad day for democracy.

Me neither. Nor did I know they carried traditional army backpacks in a police bust...

here's the local paper's take, confirming what A'AbarachAmadan suggested,

Ravers say cops were too rough making bust
Utah County: Sheriff defends the actions, denies wrongdoing

Partygoers at a rave in Spanish Fork Canyon that was busted by police Saturday night say officers used brutal and excessive force to clear the crowd.
As many as 90 police officers from several agencies, including SWAT members and major crimes investigators, stormed the DJ-driven dance party around 11:30 p.m. dressed in full SWAT gear and holding automatic weapons.
A helicopter announced the police presence as it crested a nearby hill and began shining a spotlight on the outdoor dance area, said 19-year-old Scott Benton of Logan.
"The cops just came in wearing full Army [camouflage]. It was basically brute force," Benton said. "I had a gun put in my face and was told to get out of there."
Standing in a crowd of people near the main stage, Alisha Matagi says she was just in the wrong place at the Related Articles

wrong time when she was thrown to the ground, punched, kicked and handcuffed by police.
"I did absolutely nothing wrong," she said. Matagi was arrested with about 60 other partyers. She was booked into the Utah County Jail on the suspicion of resisting arrest and failing to obey an officer, according to police records.
About 1,000 people were cleared in less than a half-hour from the private ranch owned by the Childs family in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork Canyon, rave promoters said. Several party attendees told The Salt Lake Tribune that officers barked orders fraught with profanity, beat people to the ground and used their weapons to intimidate the crowd.
A video of the opening moments of the bust, taken by Jeffrey Coombs and snatched from the ground by another partier as Coombs was tackled, shows the officers using force on individuals as they took over the crowd.
Utah County Sheriff James Tracy said Monday that he had seen the video and called it an accurate representation of the bust.
"I stand by everything that was done there that night. We did use some force. It was appropriate and necessary to take those who were fighting us into custody," Tracy said.
He also said that no officers used profanity as they conversed with partiers, nor did they punch, kick, Mace or use tear gas on any of the attendees.
"It's all a lie and we refute every word of that," said Tracy.
But the video clearly shows an officer using profanity as he demands the music be turned off.
"Turn that off. Turn that music off or I'll take your ass to jail," the officer can be heard saying to the DJ. In the video, the area where people had been dancing transforms into what looks like a battlefield with groups of officers surrounding ravers on the ground, guns drawn and assault dogs in tow.
"I saw a girl tackled to the ground for no reason because she told them not to touch her. It was vicious," Benton said.
Police said the party Saturday night was the third event held in Utah County during the past month. The all-night parties attract a host of illegal activities including drug use, theft, sexual assault and underage drinking, according to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Darren Gilbert.
Saturday's party, named Versus II, had been tracked by police for several weeks, Gilbert said. Police planned the bust when they discovered that the rave's promoters had not filed for a mass gathering permit through the County Commission office.

To have more than 250 at an event without that permit is a violation of the law, Gilbert said.
Party promotor Brandon Fullmer said he purchased a mass gathering permit through the Utah County Health Department about three weeks ago. The purchase of that permit, which ensures water, sanitation and medical services, was confirmed by County Health employee Jay Stone.
Fullmer did not know that a similar permit, which requires a security plan and event details, needed to be acquired.
The sheriff had little sympathy for the promoters or those at the rave. "They did nothing more than ensure this was a venue for illegal drug use and consumption," Tracy said. Officers confiscated ecstasy, marijuana, alcohol, cocaine and mushrooms, he said.
Among those arrested for drug possession were several security guards hired by Fullmer to patrol the event. Guards at security check points confiscated alcohol and drugs as ravers filed into the party, Fullmer said.
"[Security guards] have no legal statutory authority to take and hold controlled substances. It's against the law for them to have them," Tracy said.
In response to the final comment, if the security guards don't take the drugs away from the participants, then who can?
