I am torn between the Greeks and Persia... I'm assuming that you are asking about civ3 civs and not the real ones.

I didn't vote because I couldn't choose.

Of course it depends on the intended victory condition and on the type of map. But Persia is a pretty good "all-rounder", powerful in the Ancient Age as well is in a long science game lasting up to the Modern Age, so I voted Persia.

I went for Persia, mostly the same reasons as lanzelot. It is a good all-around civ with a solid trait combo and an excellent UU. You can compete on any level for any victory condition. Probably one of my favorite civs as well as one of the best.

The Babylonians are good for culture games, with tons of half price culture buildings. Average to bad UU (offensive unit with defense bonus).

The Greeks are good at science and at peaceful building in the early game, Hoplites will keep you safe.

The Egyptians can be a fair civ, they don't really stand out much. Somewhat map dependent UU, although good value for the cost.

Romans are the first civ I played, but are pretty average overall. Odd trait combination and UU that may not need extra defense.

Rome because there empire.

Back when I used to play, I often found myself playing with Egypt more than Rome. So Egypt comes first.

I'll go for Persia. 2 strong traits and a good UU. Early in the game Immortals are very hard to stop. I admit I have a weak for Industrial ever since vanilla days when it was the best trait. Even allowing for the weakening of Industrial Persia is still the best Civ. This, of course, is in gameplay terms.

Rome is slightly inferior to all the others IMHO, which is best depends on which strategy you want to pursue and which rivals you have.

If we're doing vanilla (didn't see that originally) then it's Egypt or Persia. Industrious was so strong in vanilla.
