Assuming they have Copper.

I usually play continents with everything else random and have only once gone without BOTH copper and iron, but then again, I usually can outexpand the computer on Prince. In that case, I did have horses, so HAs pillaged the bejeezus out of the nearest civ enough halt his progression so that HAs/cats eliminated him. There's your resource.

That being said, I guess Jags would be handy if you end up without horses, iron, and copper, but if this happens, something else went wrong. I can see this scenario if you're outexpanded due to wonder building, but Monty isn't a good choice for that either.

Norseman2,
Your additional points are truly dually noted, but proper city defense prevents pillaging(I usually opt for either a mounted unit or axe along with the quintessential archer - mount/axe takes out the pillager with the archer as last line. When expanding, mount accompanies settler to new border city). I see what you mean with mysticism/financing, but the additional maintainance of having more of a weaker unit negates the financial benefit of the shrine.
Keep it up, you are selling me on this:goodjob:! I now view the jag as a decent unit, just not one that a civ should have as it's one and only UU.
