[NFP] Portugal Reveal Video Discussion

Re Forterias, I interpreted the infirgraphic posted on the first page of this thread to mean that if it's built in say, London, then Portugal would get a flat 1p4g, plus 1p4g*number of trade routes running from Portugal to London?

I think the first 1p4g is the tile improvement yield, so it goes to London, if the tile is workable. Then an extra 1p4g is added to each Portuguese trade route sent to that city.

To better your relationship score with them ? +2 ? In the cases you intend to ally them ?
That's too insignificant to ever be of matter.

@SeelingCat Aesthetically, I like #4 a lot; in terms of readability, #2 stands out; thematically #3 looks the most "Portuguese" to me (maybe if the green were just a shade darker and the red a shade lighter?).

The Navigation School and Feitoria look great model wise. Portugal sounds like it'll be another of my favorite civs since I love trade route spamming. Even though I mostly play continents, I actually don't see too many cities (aside from Dido's) placed on coast all that often, the AI will build harbor cities but purely coastal cities are fewer than I'd like. Also glad to see the Nau builds the Feitoria, wonder if the Vox Populi mod from Civ V influenced that decision since that mod made it so the Nau auto-built the improvement instead of having to send a worker 500000 miles across the map.

With Portugal's abilities, there's no way I don't see the devs ignoring Wilhelmina's horrible LUA, especially since Portugal's ability basically includes her +1 culture for international while ALSO giving additional yields AND increasing those by 50%. Spain, for a second time now lol, also lost out on a niche of theirs since their trade route enhancer is also swallowed up by Portugal. I can see the argument for overlap with Phoenicia but I think Dido is still about colonization then using colonial cards and moving the capital to get wild yields on your core cities, Portugal is just straight naval trade.

Totally right. But... I find that in up until medieval, it actually helps global game long relationship. Somehow, getting started on good terms often pans out for the whole game. So I usually choose the neighbors I intend to troll/destroy, and those I intend to trade/ally pretty early on, and it's often guided by geographic distance (ie trade route access)... For the latter, I will usually do my best to get them on good footing early on, so that means open borders, trades and sending a delegation

Hmmm very good point there... let's see... on a huge map, possibility of 11 trade routes from civs, plus one from harbor, plus 1 from CH if playing owls, plus any bonuses from world congress and/or wonders... Totally right !!! OCC heaven !
Remember, all your trade routes will be international, so 50% bonus, effectively giving you 16.5 trade routes.

Not to get too off topic, but I just wanted to say that Prismatic was mostly created to get around the 'invisible city banner' problem, which is why there's so many more colors (and thus a less 'cohesive' palette) than BCC, since it needed to provide a potential unique color for 63 civs.

Back to Portugal, however, it just so happens I'm looking for some input on their unique-color jersey (their primary jersey will still be Blue-on-White) for Prismatic; if any of you have a preference, let me know! Options below:

(This will be their Jersey #2; Jerseys 3 and 4 are currently red-on-dark green and white-on-blue)
I love the 4th one a lot. Thank you!

I'm looking forward to building Feitorias in India.

Hot take, but Gran Colombia are pretty fun. The movement just feels... nice.
What I mean is do something like Vietnam: Make the gameplay fun and flavorful. Just changing it to +1 Movement and some additional Combat Strength on your Home Continent while moving the Promotion ability to Simon Bolivar would make Gran Colombia much better.

Remember, +50% to all yields, not just gold. So Democracy+Wisselbanken+50% means you're getting 9 food and 9 production per international trade route. Throw in Chinguetti and you can get some insane faith on them too.

Kumasi as well.

Singapore, Hunza, Nan Madol, Auckland, Great Zimbabwe, Torre de Belem... all of them will be important things for Portugal.

I have one rule with OP Civilizations: Make playing as them fun. Don't do Gran Colombia, do Maori. Don't do Korea, do Portugal.

This is why I don't have any qualms with Byzantium's design. It's OP for sure, but it's OP in a way that still requires you to do things to get the massive bonuses.

And I just now noticed that the +1 sight applies to ALL units, not just Naval units, which isn't going to be the defining feature of Portugal or anything but is going to help a bit in the early game of choosing the best coastal spots to settle quickly.

And help quickly meet the neighbors for those trade route slots.

Makes sense historically. The Portuguese didn't just explore the seas. Brazil is a firm case of this.

But seriously, this Civ is basically precisely-engineered to how I most like to play this game, to the point where it's crazy. At his point my only worries are 1.) that we won't get it for a week, and 2.) that finally having my hands on it will be like that Twilight Zone episode where the gamber's version of hell is a casino where he's always winning.
