One of the things that always irked me in civ was that all nations started the game @ 4000 BC. From a gameplay point of view, that's fine, but it is just weird historically. That's one of the reasons I like revolutions so much, because civs spawn in the middle of the game, adding lots of dynamics.

So I was thinking, why not add the option to start a game, have the game play by itself for a while, and when a revolution of a certain size happens, give control of that civ to the player. Sort of like how that barbarian scenario in warlords allows the game to play a certain number of turns by itself before you begin the game. It would be challenging, and I think it would be an interesting way to play the game, since you would be thrust into the situation as a rebel leader, possibly outmatched by your mother civ and many others. Similarly, it would be cool to have the game play a while, and when one of the barb civs forms give control to the player.

I don't know how easy or not this would be to code, but it seems you have all the pieces in place. Just AI autoplay until a big revolution event is triggered and switch player to that.

I have definitely thought about doing this ... it's kind of in there in that you can switch civs at any point, but a system where you could set up a game so that it would automate and you'ld just be thrust into a dynamic situation would be neat. I've never explored how to change the 'Custom Game' screen or anything, so I'll look into how others have set this up and see what can be done.

Being given the reigns of a rebellion is a lot of fun, although some have no chance of surviving at all so it can be difficult.

Yeah, that's why I was saying it should have to be a rebellion of a certain strength (like 2 or 3 cities or whatever), so that you don't get stuck with one random rebellious city in the midst of an all powerful empire.

I'd say that the advanced start feature could be useful for such a game option... but maybe not.

with a little imagination, Adv. Start already does

Rhye's and Fall does that.

But the Civilization rises are static. America is always founded in 1736, Korea always... whenever Korea shows up. The main difference here is that, in Rhye's, it recreates history; in Revolution, it creates history.

turn on the game, use shift-control-x to autoplay, stop autoplay as soon as a revolution happens then use shift-control-L to switch to being that player.
