Post your Windows 7 + Civ experiences please.

I am getting some strange performance errors.

Athlon 2 X2 240 @ 2.8Ghz
4Gb DDR3 1066Mhz
Radeon HD4200 512Mb

Installed Civ 4 complete and patched no problem at all on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (maybe because I am full admin and had already installed the DX9.0c runtimes) but overall it seems to run a hell of alot slower than on my old machine, a P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gb and a HD3650 running XP. Getting massive slowdown from turn one. Waiting a good 20mins to Initialize a Huge map. Something weirds going on and I can't quite work out what...

I'm having trouble here with Windows 7 and mods. Civ4 BTS runs perfect, no problems at all (after that microphone fix, thanks to whoever posted that!). Then I try and play mods that I installed (excluding the mods that came default with it), and it doesn't start up. The first mini screen comes on, then Win7 comes back reporting that the program has stopped running.

Anyone had these experiences?

I'm running Win7 Pro, if it helps.

Hello
I used to play civ IV without problem with VISTA.

I've try to reinstall the game but after having choose the language the following message appears (may be a littlte bit different because this a translation from french :-(

please be sure to have complete any other installation and to have close all applications
If error is repeting please contact our vendor: firaxis games (httt://www.2kgames.com/civ4)

can somebody help me?

Hello ,
After my civ4 mods got wiped out last year, I've been in game isolation.
A couple days ago, I broke down, bought a new computer, with win7,
and installed. FANTASTIC. Played great when I installed it... this morning.
I broke for lunch and to b w the kids. Came back to the machine to open
up a new mod, and it wouldn't load. Wouldn't load, no errors, wouldn't load,
no errors... I played w the application files to c if it was the main, warlord,
or mod that was stopping the program. Each time, Warlord. Every time.
So finally, I concluded that my beloved disks had spawned a bad copy.
First time ever. I went to uninstall, only to find no such function was there
to be had. So, I have come into the forum. Searching here, and soon on
other threads. I have no confidence in my ability pull each individual file
manually, and not miss something. So, I need help. Because my modding
is for noght, if the game won't load, uninstall, or reinstall.
Thanx for the Vent,
All help is appreciated.

bkn42---
same prob as you I suspect
driving me up the wall
I'm kindof backtracking through any thread I find (including this one)
as well as going forward
i don't know of any patches, and I can't reinstall
and i'm thinking a reinstall may not suffice

All help is appreciated.

Unfortunately I've looked a ton and have yet to find something relating to only mods not working. :(

Good luck to us both, I guess.

I have the exact same problem

thats interesting - I run civ4 + exps on both Windows Vista and Window 7 Professional.

I can't say i had done anything specail to install them other than follow Lemon's advice on vista installation.

The most important thing I think is about installing patches and expansion packs in the correct order.

I have installed and been playing Civ 4 vanilla 3 days straight now without any problems whatsoever

however, on my current mammoth game on a Terra map, I've managed to clock up 17 hrs (its conquest/domination only victories) and the game now crashes no matter what I try

I honestly cannot pin point what the problem could be. Here are my specs before I go any further:

AMD X3 720BE @ 3.21ghz
Gigabyte GTX 275
4gb DDR3 1333mhz RAM
Windows 7 RC 64 bit
vanilla Civ 4 with the 1.7.4 patch

- first off I thought maybe a 17 hr game was more than Civ 4 could handle, but I tested this out with a new random game and it crashed 5-10 mins into play (and this negates the fact I have a corrupted save file)
- i installed the game into XP and used the old save file there and it crashed again
- the only thing I can think of is a hardware problem - my GTX 275 does get quite hot when playing large maps, it goes up to 70-75 degrees celsius, or maybe it could be a RAM issue? Then again, I have been playing for 3 days straight now with no problems until now - ahh, so confusing...

anyone have any clues?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: OK, so the problem finally went away and this was due to turning off GLOBAL WARMING - my goodness, of all the things it could've been...

the game is now back to normal - no crashes whatsoever, I'm a happy man!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

guess I spoke too soon
the game has gone back to randomly crashing :*(

tried the Warlords expansion and ended with the same result

this is crushing - just when I was really getting into the game...

Found out how to use Mods in Windows 7. It's not enough to activate Admin mode when installing the mods, you have to activate admin mode through regedit command. On the safe side, reinstall the entire game after this including mods (and even safer while installing mods to right click Admin mode).

This site show ya how to activate admin mode, then uninstall, reboot, and install:

Win7 installs fine.
CivIV:BtS installs fine.
CivIV:BtS patches fine.
CivIV:BtS loads fine.
CivIV:BtS starts a new game fine.
... insert Personal Hell here ...
A random number of turns into the game BSoD.
Errors come in 2 forms:
APC_INDEX_MISMATCH
... and ...
NTFS.SYS

Tech support reports ad infinitum "you have a hardware failure".

... I removed Win7.
... I reinstalled WinXP Pro.
I have played CivIV (and many other titles that also would not run w/out BSoD) for 4 weeks now.
... Not one single BSoD.

Win7 for me = 100 BSoD/wk (about 2/3 APC_ and 1/3 NTFS).

I had been hassling with it since release (btw I liked Win7 :goodjob:)
Nearly every single game that uses DX9 BSoDs.

All drivers signed except for Creative's Audigy 2 ZS (Win7 driver was released mid Dec if memory serves me).

So, I put another hard drive in and now dual boot Win7 and WinXP (could not get bcd dual boot to work so I run hardware dual boot from BIOS)

At least I can play CivIV:BtS again 8)

[edit 2010.02.06]
System Specs
Pentium4 2.8Ghz (Alienware 2Gb)
Nvidia 9400 GT (eVGA 1Gb)
Audigy 2 ZS (Creative w/gameport)

vanilla Civ 4 crashed (no BSOD) on me in XP Pro as well, so I doubt it's the OS choice

Thanks for the update!

I'll get to it at some point and report my results, when I feel like going through all that trouble. (already sat down w/ my laptop once this week dealing with .NET updates, ugh.)

I have Win 7 Home Ultimate (32 bit) on my desk top- just a standard duo core a few years old. No problem running BTS (Vanilla).

I bought a laptop with quad core and 64 bit Windows 7 Professional. Loaded BTS again. First thing I noticed was the game does things in a different sequence to what I am familiar with. For instance, normally I would build a settler and before moving it the game would ask me what I wanted to build next. Now I get to move it and the game cycles through other cities and returns to the city where I built the settler. Other similar things are in a different sequence as well. I can live with it.

On the top right hand side of the screen icons will appear- if a wonder has been built a small icon will appear for no reason. Again, that is no big deal.

Then it crashed midway through a game and BSOD. That I can't live with. I hope Firaxis markets a new version with up to date engineering for Windows 7 with modern computers.

Re starting the game with Administrator access- do I have to do this every time I start a game or can I set it as a default?

just got a new laptop and can't play BTS on it....

I have win7 64 bit , BTS gives me blank screen when it runs , and I cant get out of it with anything like ctrl alt del, the only solution is to shut down from power button .

I have ati mobility radeon hd5650 with 1 gig , anyone having same problem ???

did you install the game with admin rights?

Welcome to CFC :band:

Yes

here is the updates I have

Civilization 4 with update 1.61 and 1.74
Warlords with latest update
BTS with 3.17

I installed the patches with admin rights as well .
I have latest directx 11, however since the graphic card is new , it doesnt have any driver update from ATI because they havent released and driver for the card, but I'm able to run other games without any problem.

As I said , I'm just getting blank screen with no sounds at all , and there is no way to exit but turning it off from power.

I tried running with admin rights didnt worked
I tried running with vista compability mode , didnt worked .

When I execute BTS , it says something about changing color scheme of windows 7 .

by the way I have win7 64bit basic edition
