Sorry, was away for the w/e. Philadelphia just got a great big "hit me" sign painted on it. Lagos should get a 'rax and start building Archers ASAP, and get a town on those flood plains.

my sentiments exactly, we are in a crowded place on an 80% water map, we need to warmonger. the celts and Amercia have to go ASAP. the celts are prolly going to be easy pickings because their territory seems more limited than ours, but America might be the first target because of the ivory.

eldar - you can take it now if you want or skip & let Mathias have it, up to you:

1) DBear -
2) Predesad -
3) Eldar - UP (swapped with Mach per predesad)
4) Mach - just finished
5) Mathias - on deck

Mach - those turns sucked, not because of anything you did but because of the two towns settled by our rivals, hopefully we can soon give you an opportunity for revenge.

Mach - those turns sucked
Yeah, they did. I was frustrated at first, but in the end we got five cities before 2000BC in pretty good spots, so I think we'll be ok.

you did the best you could considering the circumstnaces, land is at a real premium in our neck of the woods.

So I was thinking about stuff. Lisbon wasted a bunch of shields on my turns, and I couldn't find any way around that. I think Lisbon can be a 6-turn warrior/settler factory from size 3-5. So I would suggest we get 3 workers out of Lisbon right away, to get it down to size 3, then we can start the cycle. This would solve our urgent short-term need for workers. The tradeoff is it loses us gpt in the capital. What do you guys think of this?

I'll take a close look at Lisbon and see if we can get a better factory out of it. I doubt it, but it may be worth a look.

eldar - does that mean you have it?

i didnt look close at Lisbon, but i am thinking after a little more work it could get get an archer / settler every 6 turns with a mined plains & a lot of MM to take advantage of the excess food. i could be wrong

That's what I was thinking. I have it, I'll play this evening.

[Edit]
No problems at all. 5-7 gets us Archer+Settler - just build us a 'rax.
Turns 1+2, work: Cow, Forest, 2 BGs, Sugar for 10s, +3f = Archer.
Turn 3, switch Forest to Irrigated Plains for +4f. Should also net the Forest on growth, that's 11s - make that a Warrior.
Turns 4+5 (@size 6), Cow, Forest, 2BGs, Sugar, Irrigated Plains for 11s, +3f
Turn 6, switch Forest to another Irrigated Plains and we get the Settler.

So 6 turns, 1 Archer, 1 Warrior, 1 Settler. Later on, 1 Horse/Sword + 1 Settler!!

Sorry, watched the footy instead! I will play it tomorrow evening though.
We can trade. Trade Writing to various people for IW, Wheel, Maths, and tons of gold.

NO!!!!! We can't trade writing to anyone until we have Philosophy, otherwise there is a very good chance if America finds a hut they will pop philosophy.

There's also a very good chance that America will pop Writing and trade it to everyone else.

Here we go...

Summary: Played 'til CoL, we are tech leaders, and have plenty of gold, Horses, Furs soon hooked up, Lisbon in its 6-turn Horse/Settler cycle. Just watch the MM.

0 2110 Switch a few builds: Lisbon to a barracks (see earlier plan). Lagos to a worker. Workers before warriors if we can. Oporto to a scout. I like to have 3 running round when I'm expansionist. Another point - we're seafaring yet only have one coastal city. The floodplain/river/double-wheat site should really have been settled already. Chances are we'll lose it to the Celts now. Seeing as how I can do deals involving trading Writing around, leaving America without it (thus not giving them a chance to pop Philo from a hut), and get all the available techs and gold, I do so. Celts: Writing gets Wheel, Maths, 50g. Spain: Maths gets IW+130g. America: IW gets 50g. Horses and Iron are both gettable, and we shouldn't have any trouble securing both.

IT: America building Colossus.

1 2070 Disband a barb camp with the archer.

IT: Guimares Worker->Rax.

2 2030 Lux to 30% for Lisbon.

3 1990 IT: Lisbon Rax->Worker. Emerita Warrior->Worker.

4 1950 Contact with Germany. Masonry+Pottery get us Mysticism.

IT: Lisbon Worker->Settler. Oporto Scout->Settler.

5 1910 Buy a Worker off Ragnar for Mysticism.

6 1870 IT: Lagos Worker->Rax.

7 1830 IT: Lisbon Settler->Archer. It's now in the 6-turn cycle of Archer-Warrior-Settler, later Horse-Settler.

8 1790 Lux comes down, Sci goes back up.

IT: Emerita Worker->Rax.

9 1750 Celts have Horseback Riding. I'll use CoL to leverage that.

IT: Horses connected. Lisbon Archer->Warrior.

10 1725 IT: Lisbon Warrior->Settler.

11 1700 IT: CoL comes in, I trade Writing to Spain for HBR, and sell other techs around for plenty of cash. Not CoL to Brennus though, if he demands we can probably handle him now.

12 1675 Right, Lisbon is set up. Remember to MM it for 4 food on the 3rd and 6th turns. Guimares is currently using the second plains tile - swap it when required, and get a third plains irrigated. The settler is heading for planned city #1. Settler from Oporto should settle on the Iron. Others vaguely in the order shown.

Dot-mappish. Few wasted tiles. A bit more CxxC than CxxxC but space seems a little limited.

Neil. :cool:

I got it, and will play tonight. Lisbon can use the grassland tile to grow, so Guimarães can keep the irrigated plains and not sacrifice growth.

sounds good, eldar, but i still would not have traded writing, the chances of America popping writing are usually lower because of its high cost, while phil is a very low cost tech, anyway, since you did decide to do the trade, you made some good deals. anyway, just hope all goes well for slingshot.

1) DBear - on deck
2) Predesad - holding breath for slingshot
3) Eldar - just finished
4) Mach - swapped
5) Mathias - UP (got it)

Looking good. Played through philosophy, got republic, and switched governments.

not much here

Notes: We just came out of anarchy, so we have no beakers invested in currency. I don't know if we want literature first or not. Two settlers are ready to unpack next turn. America has polytheism. I think they picked it up in 1450 BC, but I'm not 100% sure as I didn't write it down.

and here is the save.

1) DBear - UP
2) Predesad - on deck
3) Eldar -
4) Mach -
5) Mathias - just finished

things seem to be looking good, i dont know if it matters which we research first, lit or currency, we are almost assured of getting a monopoly on both no matter which we research first. the real question, IMO, is who do we attack first, Amercia or the Celts, and how soon will we be ready?

Lit will be more useful - the AI won't research it. Lit->Currency is a pretty solid path to go.

Got this, will play sometime over the weekend--no later than Sunday. Planning to build up military.

p.s. almost crossposted w/Mathias!

Here's what I'm thinking: Attack America first. Capture Philidelphia and smash Atlanta. Have a settler ready to claim the land. Sue for peace then send our troops to Lugdunum, Entremonte, and Alesia. The Celts should not be able to recover after losing these cities. We should enslave the populations of Lugdunum and Alesia and build our own cities in more desirable locations. When our peace treaty with America expires, we move back and finish them off.

We may also want to send a couple settlers out to the chokepoint near Spain.

Regarding Philly - it ought to be a safe hold, so wait for it to be size 2. Or gift Abe republic so he can't pop-rush. However get it connected by road before we take it - and have a pre-build going for SoZ (MoM is usually good for that).

I'm going to have to ask for a skip. I'm finishing up my CotM and I'm booked til the end of the month. Perhaps a swap with someone?
