Preparing for a possible invasion.

Problem is of course that this will only delay their landing. In order to prevent it, the blockade needs to be extended to the whole island, or it should move at the speed of the BABE galleys. Then we need roads.

16 units is about our entire military IIRC.

Yes, only sea passage. You don't get safe ocean travel until Navigation or Magnetism, no wonders change that.

Well, that's theoretically but when I once built the Great Lighthouse, one of my galleys did survive like 4-6 turns in ocean. But then again I also had two of my galleys sink, but that was only two of the many galleys that entered the ocean. But maybe I was just incredibly lucky... :crazyeye: and it was also in vanilla so maybe odds are higher in c3c.

But I am definately sure the odds of a lighthouse galley sinking in the ocean are lower than a normal galley sinking in the sea.

If babe has a lot of galleys they might try to send two or three across the ocean and at least one will succeed, but I doubt they will try. However, there might be a sealane we don't know about. Maybe the map is more irregular than we thought...

Maybe babe didn't expect to get the lighthouse so they didn't build up a mw millitary beforehand. But even if they are doing it now, we should already be weak against babe. Of course they can also use the lighthouse in a peaceful manner, but then they would've been more nice to us from the beginning...

Now this is really surprising. I thought BABE's best chances would be to take out one weak opponent quickly. I'd have trusted Wotan to have quite a force ready before they revolted for one quick strike. :hmm:

I'm a little disppointed now :crazyeye: :D

zyxy has come up with an alternate proposal for our defense. His approach involves three mobile defense groups and roads to support their movement to counter an invasion. I think his plan may be the best in the long run since we can use ancient cavalry to stock the force. But it will take time to get those AC and also to build the needed roads. In the mean time we can use the General's blocking plan to cover likely invasion points (with warriors?).

Since it also looks like we have some time we need to get a naval presence established, at least to do some final exploring for possible sea lanes and to act as early warning look outs.

We need to do some calculating and figure out how much of an army and navy we need and can support. And first impressions on what we need?

For the navy we need at least one galley for each sea lane to our home land. There are two known sea lanes and could be two more. We may lose a galley or two exploring for those possible sea lanes so I think we need to build two to four more galleys and have a lookout group of two to four galleys (depending on exploration losses and discoveries).

I’m not so sure about a big navy… I don’t want to get over-confident, but now that we’re Average to BABE, strong to everyone else we know, and have a peace treaty with everyone we’ve met, it seems terrifically unlikely that we’re going to face an invasion before we have our Hwach’a. From there, it’s a short jump to Cavalry and then Railroads… which we have VERY good odds of getting for free, as long as FREE goes along with the MAAP II.
With Cavalry and rail lines, it’s hard to see how anyone can even bother us before Bombers. At that point, fielding a fleet of fast moving Destroyers (12.8.8) will make terrific sense. (Destroyers are the fastest moving ship in the game, they eat Transports (1.2.6) for lunch, and can even take on a Battleship (18.12.5) if needed.)

Until then… well, I think we need a couple Galleys to help us settle the nearby islands (if we can beat BABE to them) and to confirm/deny the existence of any more sea lanes. After that, I just don’t see having any boats being worth the 2gold upkeep in our Republic. It’ll be easier and more cost effective to kill units on land (in the unlikely event we’re invaded), and Galleys are on the transport upgrade path… so no reason to keep them for upgrades either.
Ideally, our AC’s and some horses from The Chamber will just keep us to Average with BABE, and that’s good enough. Otherwise, we’ve got a LOT of domestic building to do if we want to win a Space Race… so I’d argue we focus on that, and not get worried about an invasion till the Late Industrial Age.
(assuming of course, that BABE doesn’t change their mind on the treaty, get really hostile all of a sudden, and massively run-up their power score.)

They certainly will massively run-up their power score. They should use their best force, their MWs and they are running out of time to do so. They should be producing MWs like mad as soon as they reach Republic. :hmm:

I think they will rather go after one of our weaker allies. :smug:

However they already surprised me once... :crazyeye:

But I agree with you, we should concentrate on development now, ACs and a casual horse, few trebs and ships in other towns and the rest: workers, settlers, libs and unis. And also some markets.

We don't HAVE a peace treaty with BABE yet. And FREE still needs to sign MAAP2...

IMO the important thing about military is not so much that it has to be built, but that each unit costs 2 gpt.

A few galleys as lookouts is a relatively cheap investment though, and probably worth it...

I don't think we should sign a peace treaty with Babe.

I don't think we should sign a peace treaty with Babe.

And you do think we should get invaded by 5 babe galleus filled with two MWs each in the next ten turns, so we didn't even have a chance to build up our road network or even a decent amount of millitary, and then let Babe control two islands to be able to beat the other teams aswell? :old:

Besides, we've already sent the proposal for peace.

Is it just me, or are the other teams really slow on replying to our letters? Especially Free...

We should definitely sign the treaty with Babe. And yes, they are slow to respond. Maybe a little nudge?

OT: I think FREE is suffering from lack of participation. It seems it is just CommandoBob...

We've given FREE quite a lot to chew on. Remember how many days it took us to write that MAAP II proposal… and I basically sent a reminder just 2 days ago, and things tend to slowdown on the weekend anyway. I wouldn't worry about FREE just yet. Like zyxy says, I think they're most likely just suffering from a lack of participation.

There's really no question about signing the treaty with BABE (There's no reason to NOT have a peace treaty –unless someone wants to campaign for us to invade them with our sinkable boats? and there are plenty of reasons TO have one).

We know BABE is more active, and I'm hoping we'll hear from them soon. It's also only been just over 48 hours since we sent the peace treaty back to BABE, and again, with that being mostly weekend hours.

In my opinion, we're still sitting pretty.

I think no team has our level of participation and fun!!

We have much debate and many ideas ;)

BABE doesn't scare me any.... but I still don't want them attacking us, or FREE.

Do you guys know how to do a rolling blockade.
