Is there any formula that you use for troop ratios to protect cities?? What are the best units?? I was playing regent level, Riflemen in my cities,, and got completely run over by the AI Cav. On the other hand, if I attacked their cities protected with riflemen with my Cav, I hardly ever won. Any tips??

Were their cities bigger than yours? If so, they might had better defense bonuses.

There's no hard and fast rule for garrisons. I usually have none in interior cities, and for border (and coastal) cities I make a judgement in each case how many are necessary.

The cities were about the same size,, The AI also seems to know which cities are heavily defended and which are not,, They made penetrations right to the lightly protected cities.. Are they cheating?? I've lost alot of outlying cities, but I will eventually win them back cause, I brought another strong AI into the battle, and were hitting from both sides..

I seem to remember having read something by one of the civ3-boffins (unfortunately I don't remember who or where) that the AI does know which cities are weakest defended, and my own admittedly rather limited experience seems to confirm that.

Yeah, the AI knows were all the units are, (as well as all the map, all the resorces etc.)

So you need decent defence in ALL your cities than are within a move of the AI border (3 tiles when you get to cavs), and enough offensive units to kill any enemy that finishes their turn in your terretory. As the AI does not tend to build up its units before attacking, in an ongoing war this number is not that high. The time when you need to be able to defend against big stacks is when the AI make wars with you after it has been at peace for a period of time.

When planning an attack, use [ctrl]+[shift]+[m] that will clear the map from a lot of thing (you can customize the cleaning in the options) so has to be sure where is a river running. :) If you don't already do this, it's really usefull. If you are overran, try building a couple bombarding units (in C3C there are a couple of cheat defence bombing only units as the bowmen and longbowmen) both offensive (e.g canon) and defensive (e.g bowmen). By redlining the AI units you will break down its offensive.
Try to keep your units in town, as soon as the ennemy is redline, dare a killing attack, but don't kill the last unit of a stack, or you will have a unit in the open, at at that point you have less units than the AI, so none to spare. A redlined enemy unit will almost never attack.
Hope that will help you :)

Thanks all for the advice,, I will redefine my plans to incorporate,,,,, I appreciate your efforts... BACK INTO THE BATTLE!!!!

Using military alliances can also take some of the heat off of you, as the AI will have to divert alot of troops to face new invasions and threats.

Were you using a road?
What were the HP's?
Were you crossing a river?
Did thier city have walls?
What terrain?
We need details

I think in most battles, they usually have the AI win if fortified.
Plus, there is a home territory advantage, where if it's in their erritory, their stronger.

There's also a lot of luck in the battles (tank-spearman syndrome), In a recent battle I had a size 7 city accross a river defended by muskets (defence 4) and lost 4 of those to knights (attack 4) while the knights took minimal damage, strangely my 2 cav's I had in the city (defence 3) took out 4 attacking knights without dying.

Also have some offencive units in your cities. If your defending with muskets (2.4) and being attacked by MedInf (4.2), your proberly better off attacking those MedInf with knights (4.2) before they attack then waiting for them to attack your town (considering terrain of course, and if your knights can retreat to safety in time)

Yes, definately. In regent, the AIs are hardly good enough to fight one civ and continue an invasion of another.

I don't like how the AIs know where every unit on the map is either... but there is something good about it IF you play with a lot of barbarians on a high level. The AIs slaughter all of them for you. :) Even those that are about to pillage one of your towns. :)
