Oh, great. I'm away for a week, and I miss the major release party. Not only that, but the cradle is filled up as well. I guess I'll fetch a needle and stab myself in the eye, repeatedly.

*sigh*

NK/Thy, can you reveal some more of the eastern edges of the cradle? I really want to join, but there's no room for me as it is. I understand this might be unfair for those who just recently joined, so the decision is totally up to you guys. Still, I've never heard of a mod refusing potential players...

The eastern edge... You do realize what kind of terrain is likely to be there, correct? :p

The western edge might be somewhat more sensible, to be honest.

Fine, the western edge then. I don't care much. It just seemed like the bay area kind of created a natural border for the cradle. I'll be happy to join if you lift the shroud a tiny bit.

OOC: Apologies for the piece of rubbish I pretend to call a story. I rushed it in order to get out the door on time. Perhaps I will create a revised version later. In any case:

Pelathir, Callixtus

“Ah, Pelathir, city of jewels. A beautiful hilltop gemstone, glittering in the sun. Perhaps one of the most beautiful settlements in all of Arios. Breathtaking…absolutely breathtaking. Commander!”

“Yes, M’Lord?”

“Burn it to the ground!”

“The Gosican army was more than capable of that. After joining the war on the side of the Princepii, they had ripped through the Callixtii countryside, smashing through their defenses virtually unopposed. If Sir Robert the Odd had been right in his thesis of inertia, then the incredible momentum this early success had created would rout the Callixtii from their own capital and strike a decisive blow against the hated Claidheans, perhaps even secure victory. Things were going very, very well.

Despite the momentum, the Callixtii were still putting up a valiant defense. It had taken two days of bloody fighting to breach the outer walls. Smoke rose from the interior as troops fought street to street, house to house. Pelathir was determined to go down fighting, and fighting hard.

As the first wave of blue had swept over the plains and towards the gates, they had stood their ground. There was not a large amount of men inside the city, and they were totally unprepared for a major engagement. That they had held out this long was a testament to their fierce determination and their heritage. Gosican troops stretched as far as the eye could see, and they had stood defiant.

But that resistance did not last forever. Now that the outer defenses had been breached and fighting had turned to the streets, it was only a matter of time before it was in Gosican hands. A bloody struggle it would be though. The Gosican army paid in blood for every street corner, every house, every shop they took. If there were ever a time when the momentum might hit a wall and stop, it would be now. Flames bursted around every corner, case shot flew in most every direction. Guerilla warfare is a terrible thing, a dishonorable horror, and the Callixtii took to it like a cat, clutching the ground in its last throes of life.

I was there, among those men. My division was ordered to take the poor quarter at any cost. Walking into those slums was like walking into a nest of angry swordflies. The Callixtii had hidden themselves in the buildings, taking cover where they could and waiting in ambush. I nearly walked into one myself, and I would have been blown to bits had not another man pushed me out of the way and under an overturned cart. I looked around to thank him later, but he, along with most of the men involved in that conflict, was dead in the streets.

I arose and tried to connect with the main force, as I realized I would not survive on my own. As I progressed through the city, scared to death, I searched over my shoulder constantly, in alleys, and in windows. There was no telling where the devils might be next. I ran into another group of survivors from an ambush at the dock, where they had been attacked from underneath the wharf. Together we tried our best to get out of the poor quarter, making our way towards a bridge; the river divided the poor quarter from the marketplace and other quarters. We were almost at the north bridge when again they fell upon us. We took cover in an old woman’s home. She was petrified, but was no danger to us. Unfortunately, the house was not very well built, and they had us surrounded. We were sure we would not survive.

Suddenly, we heard gunshots outside the house. None of them were directed at ourselves, so we wondered if perhaps a division had come to rescue us. To our surprise, it a group of common folk of the poor quarter, armed and angry. They routed the enemy troops and forced them into the river. We later learned that these people were Gottic rebels, who embraced our liberation of their lands from the hated Claidheans. I owe them my life and my freedom.”

“Wow, Daddy, that’s amazing!” The little boy jumped up and down and clapped his hands enthusiastically, his brown hair being tossed about as he did so. He loved his father’s war stories, and wanted to be just like him when he grew up, defending the Great Gosican Kingdom from enemies, rescuing damsels in distress, and all sorts of heroism. His father was very proud of the young boy.

His brother, on the other hand, was a different matter. “Father, why did the Gosican army participate in guerilla fighting?” He was an inquisitive boy, always challenging the norm, but also willing to learn if only given the chance.

The father leaned over in his chair and looked him in the eye, trying to find some sort of mockery in his question. “You see, Dorrin,” He said, “The Callixtii resorted to guerilla war in order to defeat us, because they knew they could not do so otherwise. It is a low, dishonorable, vile form of combat, and yes, it should be avoided at all cost. However, we realized that in order to secure victory and the safety of the Gottic and Guipikan peoples, sacrifices had to be made. I can assure you, had the Callixtii wanted an open battle on the plains of Pelathir, we would have been more than happy to give them a beating to remember.

What’s important is that we have won the war, and now Gosica is becoming a great nation in the eyes of Arios. Gosica and Princeps are in a mighty alliance, one that must be dealt with carefully. We have ensured our freedom from the Buridisian, Callixtii, and Kantic tyrants, and are entering a golden age of peace and prosperity. This truly is a happily ever after.”

But will it remain happily ever after? This remains to be seen. In any case, a new age has begun for the Kingdom of Gosica, one that shall change it…forever.

Here are the named map and nation descriptions for the continent of Alhaven. Please take this time to ignore any other summer NES preview threads out there, as we are clearly superior in all possible ways. :p

NK and I will have Thule and Karai's nation descriptions, as well as a revised world map with some changes, up in the next 2 days.

We're going to launch in the next week. There will be two threads. Start writing stories, or continue to write them...we'll still accept story-reservations up until the NES officially begins, then it's first come, first serve!

Spoiler Alhaven Nations :
Vice-Royalty of the Western Dominions: After the chaos of the Great Rebellion and Confederate Civil War, King Albert I took action to prevent another rebellion. He granted limited autonomy to the western provinces, and created a colonial parliament with proportional representation. Of course, he ensured that the civil service remained royally-appointed, including the governor, who retained veto powers. These reforms ensured that the surviving Alhaven colonies remained loyal, developed a thriving lumber and steel industry, and have proved to be the centerpiece of Jathalland’s empire thus far.

United Republic of Alhaven: The first colonists to settle the Elvetan river basin were Metti. Their scattered settlements coexisted with the shrinking native villages, until the arrival of Athurian, Jekeveran, and Gleanne immigrants. The center of the continent gradually fell under Jathalland’s dominion, with the last few Mettlingen holdings forcibly captured during one of the intercolonial wars. Central Alhaven developed a free and unrestricted lifestyle that was abruptly shattered when Jathalland attempted to reorganize the chaotic frontier regions into ordered provinces. Farmers in the backcountry rioted against the moving/abolishing of courts and county seats, viewing it as a distant King exercising total tyranny over their lives. Jathalland was notoriously slow to deal with the growing problem, and by the time troops were dispatched, the merchant guilds had already propped up the rebellion, and set up shop in the coastal cities. A long and bloody war culminated with Jathalland being forced to recognize the new republic. Though somewhat unstable, its multiethnic character has attracted many immigrants from Callixtus and Thule in particular. The culture remains quite hardy and uninterested in Arios politics, though they strongly resent the continued colonialism in the region, even from their occasional ally Mettlingen. Even now, URA supported rebels are revolting against the corrupt authority of the guilds…

Federation of Elster: During the Great Rebellion of 1423, many villages of Gleanne immigrants from Thule, always fiercely autonomous, did not join the emerging republican movement to their south. Organizing an independent militia, they were hit by Jathalland’s fiercest counterattacks, and had most of their land occupied, only to slaughter the garrisons sent to hold the territory. Their stubborn resistance, combined with Metti assistance, eventually secured their independence. Since then, however, Elster has remained isolationist, agricultural, and completely closed off to the world. They are famed for excellent timber and fine marksmen, and are deeply religious, following Facetist Seraphism.

Senemor: The Senekia were a dying race of Alhaven natives, forced out of their native forests to scratch out a living on the western plains. But then, they discovered horses, which had escaped and migrated north from the colonial settlements. They quickly subdued the surrounding tribes, but were still under pressure from Jathalland, and later Glesburgh. Forty years ago, a convoy of Elstadt ships en route to Glesburgh was destroyed in a storm. The Senekia treated the shipwrecked sailors with remarkable kindness, and as a result many chose to stay, becoming part of the society that had adopted them. As a result of the interbreeding, a level of Arios technology and military skill has been brought to the nation, and their excellent cavalry have helped resist URA incursions so far.

Kingdom of Glesburgh: Glesburgh, controlled by the ancient and noble (and some say completely insane) House of Alevan, is a relic of the Confederate Civil War. The Alevans, of Jekeveran origin, were originally the ruling house of Jathalland, made so by the union of Jekever and Athuria that created the Confederate Kingdoms. Following the success of the Great Rebellion in Alhaven, King Kedric II’s authority was challenged by many Athurians, who resented the complete royal disregard for the will of the Alhaven colonies and Athuria alike, while money from the treasury was lavished on Jekever. When Albert Lansing, citing his descent from a branch of the ancient House of Helecor, thought previously exterminated, gained the support of most of Athuria for the kingship, the civil war was on. It raged across the Peninsula, Thule, down Horizon’s End and into Alhaven. After 10 years of sporadically vicious fighting, the Alevans were pushed out of Arios and across the sea…but they weren’t completely defeated. Ethnically Jekeveran regions, along with several army units that had just managed to hold northern Alhaven for King Kedric in the Great Rebellion, gained the upper hand in northwestern Alhaven. There the descendents of the Alevans have ruled, in a constant state of undeclared war with their neighbors, and still claiming the throne of Jathalland. Obviously Jathalland guards its’ borders carefully…

League of Free Cities: Many say that the League of Free Cities is neither a league, nor free. It is true, the league has all but dissolved in current years, with most of the cities turning to piracy and internal warfare. And yes, most of the city-states are propped up by the guilds, as they have been from the beginning. Their continued existence is justified by the guilds, who require a constant supply of mercenaries and…other employees that the constant conflict breeds. Each of the Cities is a haven for piracy, espionage, and crime. Their rulers include pirates, corrupt merchants, and thugs with enough money to buy hired guns. They really aren’t useful for much…but of course, they discovered diamonds last year.

Elesius: Elesius was the dream of an eccentric, affluent Mettlingen merchant, who managed to buy himself not only a small fleet, but a small army and nation to go along with it. Finding a relatively deserted cove, he settled down with his army, moved in a few peasants who were desperate for a new start to life, and built up a nation almost as strange as its founder. Determinedly anachronistic, its pillars and scrolling carvings evoke the classical era of our world; it was in fact designed to imitate the mighty Justician Imperium. Of course, it is a poor reproduction at best, for there are too few people to truly make a decent empire, and the fact that its land is none too arable. Yet Elesius lives on, a nation where a few deluded "patricians" rule over a rather confused populace. This eden-like throwback of a nation may soon find itself in something of a fix, if anyone with a fair amount of power finds them.

Can you tell me more about those rebel noble houses? Are one of those the orange nations thats occupying Cyrusicm's northern territories?

The Imperator had, had enough. The guerilla war waged against the rebel nobles that fled across the Kantic Mountains had been waged for years with heavy casualties on both sides. The nobles had recruited fast cavalry troops striking Imperial troops and then fleeing into the mountains and forests. It was a game of cat and mouse with the Imperial Army chasing the rebels through the mountains and forests never catching them as they simply fell back.

Finally the center of their resistance had been reached and occupied. However the resistance had not ended. Even in occupied territory the attacked had continued never ceasing.

Thus the Immolation begun. On the night of the Immolation the last centers of resistance of the noble houses burned as the Imperial Alchemists were sent in. Using advanced weaponry they rained fire and death upon the enemy leaving nothing but charred ruins and death in their wake. Every man, woman, and child was killed the villages and cities obliterated in a massive maelstrom of fire.

The Imperial Alchemists. The mystical elite sect of the Imperial Military that employed new and horrifying weapons of war and answered personally to the Imperator. They were human weapons of terror sent to do what others could not.

It is said that the fires of the Immolation continued to burn days afterward. Smoke and soot rose high in the air and blanked wide areas of the forest. Ash and charred bodies clogged the rivers, and the stench of death permeated the land.

And on that night. The night of the Immolation. All resistance ended.

Is Alhaven an industrial nation? I'd think I like to play it maybe some time in the future.

@Cleric: They're industrializing, roughly at an 1860's technology level.

@Silver: Technically some of their capitals are under siege, still. And the mountains probably aren't called Kantic, since that's the major ethnic group of central Halidom to your west.

But besides that, you're definitely launching a major offensive, so the burning of some cities wouldn't be impossible.

Could we get some information on the dominant religions in the regions presented so far? I'm actually very surprised no one else has asked for this yet.

You can see details on Alamya, the main religion of Hadir, above the Hadiran nation descriptions.

Seraphism, the main religion of Arios, has a long and complicated history, which I'm writing up now, but I'll give you the summary.

The religion was founded in Halidom, when a rare double eclipse occurred. You see, the world has two moons, one red, and one blue. The two moons covered the sun, creating a strange effect that allowed the Kantic confederacy, on the verge of defeat, to overcome the armies of Justicia and the Claidhe in a massive, 3-way battle that remains one of the most important in Arios history to this day.

I won't bother with the long saga of expansion, but Seraphism, aggressively supported by the Kantic confederacy and introduced to Torenze by force, eventually gained sway over the whole continent when the Alamyan jihad had penetrated to Halidom itself, a minor state which had recently risen to lead the shattered Kantics.

It gradually split into three sects, arguing on the nature of the deity, Seraph. Unists are the traditionalists of Seraphism, including mostly Halidom and the Cyrus. They believe that there is only one God, period. The Facetists include the Claidhe and Jathalland, who worship a slightly different form that believes that the two aspects of Seraph are manifested in the two moons.

The Dianist sect, or heresy, present mostly in Torenze and Princeps, says that there are two distinct gods, each embodied in the two different moons, but united into one overarching "force" by the "Seraphic Union".

I've made a religious map, but it needs to be updated, so you'll probably see it with the launching of the main NES.

I'm doing a little mixing of cultures for my cradle kingdom, here's the corresponding background story

What was this fool thinking? That this, the home of civilization would fall so easily. For thousands of years there had been invaders, but every time they were stopped at the ford. And these barbarians were not going to change it. King Ako was furious, he barked orders lining up the men just so. The spears were lined up in a tight formation, his best archers behind, arrows trained on the ford. When the last of his elite chariots was in it's place he calmed down. He across to the river. They were like animals, most were half naked and none wore anything resembling armour. Their weapons were poorly smithed, yet they had a certain menace. The long curved falxes, the heavy blades and shields, the horses and their riders. The enemy were approaching, there were obviously no tactics, they were just scattered around like cattle in a field. He could see the leaders of the rabble. They were distinguished in their attire and some basic armour. He let his eye scan to the other flank where he saw another group. Amongst these were their king. He could see it in the way he held himself. Over proud and confident. But he had an unnerving calmness about him. The stopped just on the other bank and waited.
There was what sounded like thunder, and they suddenly took on a new demeanor. There rose one cry, as if the whole army had fused and become one gigantic beast, awesome in it's strength and ferocity, half-crazed and yet completely knowing in every move and strike. As they charged he felt the ground shake, the sky seemed to darken. The only sound to be heard was a strange half scream, half roar. King Ako suddenly felt the fear that everyone of his men felt. By the gods, this might be harder than he thought.
The rain started, uncannily synchronized with the first limb to fall, independent of it's owner.

The rain carried on pouring, it hadn't done anything since the start of battle, maybe it was a curse, maybe a blessing.
He lay in the mud, just away from one of the chariots that never moved, bogged down in the mud that now covered the battle field. He heard some distant cries, probably of the last remainders being finished off.
He couldn't move, all energy, and strength had left him and he just lay there and thought. They had been driven out of their homeland many years ago. He wasn't actually born at the time, but he had heard many stories. The merciless hordes that never seemed to end. How the men, and women, had fought heroically but had inevitably been defeated. His was one of the few families that had survived the onslaught only to face extreme hardship as nomads, searching for some new place to settle down.
Had they found one? Well he probably wouldn't live long enough to find out. Half his left arm was laid on his chest, the other half was about 100 metres away buried in mud. He felt numb, and he faded into darkness. He never saw his saviours arrive, only remembered in dim dreams how he was carried back to the city.

When he awoke the room was full, the few leaders that remained, plus some scarred warriors, and his dear, younger sister. He smiled as she jumped onto his bed . To his left he saw his arm, or what remained of it, bound up. He took another look around and saw faces he didn't recognize, most likely the enemy, he thought.
"We are glad to see you awake my lord, we feared the worst, but you have recovered well."
Another man stepped forward "I'm afraid to tell you your father is dead"
"In my heart I already knew, do not cry sister, there is no nobler a death, when it is my turn to journey, I can only hope it is as such"
"Well there is another matter my lord."
"Yes?"
"The matter of you becoming king, my lord."

These are the spots that, as far as I can tell, are claimed in the cradle. Only nations who have stories written are officially on the map, but the claims for land still stand until the first update (you don't need to write anything in this thread, in other words; your spot will still be there when this is started).

Confirmed (via story):
Cuivienen
#1 Person
Grombar
Nylan
fantasmo
Toltec
jalepeno_dude

In the old world, current claims (substantiated by stories, anyway), are:

Nylan: Gosica
Insane_Panda: Jathalland
Silver: Cyrusicum
jalepeno_dude: The Two Brothers
Iggy: Sarcastic Merchant Captain (I'm not sure if you want a specific nation)

Please let me know in the likely event that I forgot someone.

A full, labeled map of the known world is likely to come tomorrow; more descriptions will come around the same time, if perhaps a little after.

My deep thanks to those who have written stories; I reread them all tonight, and this is looking to be excellent.

You've forgotten my claim in the cradle. I'm supposed to be at the outlet of the north-western river. Story will hopefully come some time soon.
