Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hello,

How do I deal with the fact people are unhappy because of over population?

Thnx.
Well there's two ways of looking at it. In order to decrease the unhappy faces, reduce your population (not a likely choice). The only other alternative is to increase your happy faces by building certain structures and connecting resources that grant happiness.

.....and positioing units in cities to act as "Military Police" under Hereditary Rule.......1 Happy Face per Military Unit. :)

This is how I thought it worked too. There's something that you build that says it gives a small chance of discovering resources. Given that resources are discovered via researching technology, this is confusing me. How can resources be discovered by technology AND improvements?

I'll look up the specific structure when I'm in front of the game.

It's mines. An existing mine has a small chance (might happen ~2 times in an average game) of "discovering" a resource each turn. Like your miners hit a gold seam or something. You can only discover a resource this way if you already have the tech to see it.

So you have a mine on a tile with no resources. You're saying that the small possibility is that a resources may show up underneath it (provided you have the technology to see it)?

It's only when you build the mine that there's a possibility of discovering a resource IIRC, and I think it's mostly resources like gold and silver, which you can see without any techs.

I think we may all be talking about different things here. When I research iron working, all iron tiles are revealed everywhere I have explored. Fine.

Now my question is why the mine says that it has a small chance of discovering iron. Hasn't iron already been discovered in all the pre-arranged places on the map? It's always been there, but I couldn't see it before I researched iron working.

Now what Renata said makes sense to me. If you have a mine that's not mining a known resource, there's a small possibility that one may show up there even though it wasn't a pre-arranged location, and therefore didn't show up after researching iron working. In other words, there's a small possibility that the mine will create a resource in the tile it occupies. Is my last statement correct?

Can you have normal game speed with a gigantic map, or do you have to use marathon game speed to use the largest map possible?

In other words, I want a very large map with lots of civs, but don't want to have to wait so long to build or get advances.

Yes, game speed and map size are totally independent. You can play at marathon speed on a duel map with 18 civs, if you want.

alright im on this continent, me and this other dude, i just started the game and i found him around turn 4-5, what units should i make, early game, to conquer him?

It is early in the game. I have an open border agreement with my neighbor, which I now want to violate and declare war. Moving my attackers onto thier squares is not working, they just occupy the same square. Any idea on how to get rid of this damned treaty?

Thanks!

You are correct; oagersnap is wrong. Every turn that an "un-resourced" mine exists, there is a small chance a resource will show up there. It's not just on the turn the mine is built.

I think there might be an few exception. Have you ever noticed that except for luxury resources, resources never occur on adjacent tiles? I suspect the same might be true for "discovered" resources, that mines adjacent to resources will never discover anything. At least, it hasn't happened to me so far.

Alt-click on the player name on the main screen, or open the foreign advisor and visit the civilization and declare war from that interface.

I have two questions.

I won't be buying the game until May, because I won't have a computer to run it until then. Will Firaxis fix the glitches in the game by then, or will I have to get the patches like everyone else?

Also, how much video card memory will I need? The one I'm looking at has 128MB, is that enough?

For conquests for civ3 by the time i got it (quite a few months after it came out) it was already patched so theres a good chance it will already be patched if you get it later.

on the box min video is 64mb and reccomended is 128mb so that one should be fine.

I really need help when it comes to mods. Is there a way to combine mods? For example I am using a mod that allows the maps to looking like the actually Earth, but I also what to play with other civilizations and scenarios using that mod. Sorry if it is confusing. Thanks a lot in advance.

If you have internet access when you run Civ 4, you can check for "outstanding" patches.....and it will download the patches for you!!

If you don't have internet access, you can compare the version you are playing from the on-screen version number to the latest version mentioned on this site.........and download, if necessary..........when you have internet access, of course! ;)

If you don't have to download anything, the version you buy will have been patched. If you watch the headlines of this site, you'll be well aware of the "Patch Situation"! :)

The one thing you can be SURE of........To Play the latest version of Civ 4 WILL require patches. :)

When you talk to that guy, click 'What deals we have' if the 10 turns has expired it will let you break the deal.
The other tips are, of course, valid too. There are multiple places to break a open borders deal.

how do you increase or decrease the number of civs on a map?

Just like Civ3 each map size has a default number of civs. Also like Civ3 you can use the drop down menu on the map start up page to specify the AI civs or set a slot to "none."

IIRC from the start up page you would go single player => custom maps
