Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can someone tell me how much GBs take the original civilization with the two expansions, or with just "Beyond the sword"?!?

Aha. about 1.5 per city early game, that's a useful rule of thumb for reference. I had a bout of playing where I tended to put off building workers in favor of early population growth, even when I had no seafood resource. Recently, though, I've tried doing the earlier worker. Thanks for the reply.

I have another question for those around. What's the effect of opening borders on likelihood of AI war declaration? Having open borders for awhile does give that +1 bonus in relations, but does it make AI war declaration more likely in the short-term? The assumption is that the AI civ's power rating is higher than mine. So I guess the question really boils down to how does a AI civ determine what its likelihood to win a war. I've had cases where I see the AI stack move near my border, most likely for a war against me, only to back off when I moved a bigger stack into a defensive position. This experience would indicate that the AI does more than just go by the power rating in determining whether to declare war? So opening borders and letting the AI scout my territory could reveal weak spots that the AI is tempted to exploit? Is this correct?

I forgot to add re open borders. Can not opening borders make short term war more likely in a converse scenario? Let's say I have a very strong defensive set up (nice stack in a hill border city with no adjacent forests/hills to siege from), could showing this to the AI through open borders actually deter the AI? Or am I giving the AI too much credit? :)

Every number of worker per cities is essentially wrong because there are circumstances that you need more workers and circumstances that you need less. The goal should be to have no unimproved tiles that are being used by one of your cities. As long as you have such tiles, you don't have enough workers.
If you really need a rule of thumb as a starting point, then 1.5 is not so bad. It probably means that in most cases (except the excessive amount of jungle tiles case), you'll have enough workers. And CCRunner is correct, that you need less workers once you have improved the area around your cities and are just using them to (re)improve conquered cities. It's often better to start with creating 2 workers for your first city and then slowly lowering the average number of workers per city to 1.5 and lower, then to start with 0 workers for your first city and then only starting creating additional workers when you've created a second city.

The AI does scout your area to find the weaker and stronger points in your defence and then they'll attack the weaker spots. But the AI's moves are pretty predictable so this knowledge doesn't necessarily help the AI.

Say I'm fighting a war with mansa and churchill takes him as a vassal and dows me. If I take mansa's last city and destroy his civilization does the war weariness I accumulated disappear? I want churchill's land and don't want the diplomatic hits from dowing him, but my people are getting mad and I'm a long way from jails, police state, and mount rushmore.

The WW from your attacks againsy mansa's cities and units will disappear, but any accumulated against Churchills will remain until you are at peace or he is wiped out as well.

I have a question about promotions.

I am running Vassalage, have barracks, and have Great Generals settled in 3 of my cities in my current game. However, when I build units in these cities, I only get 2 promotions to these units. Does the XP needed to get another promotion increase the higher you go, is it some game glitch, or is there a limit to the number of promotions you can get per turn? If it's the first, where can I find the chart with the XP needed for next promotion? Just a curiosity thing. Thanks. :)

That's not a glitch. Promotions are at: 2, 5, 10, 17, etc... So assuming you had 1 general in each of your three cities then you would be getting 7 exp. per unit, enough for 2 promotions.

Thanks a lot! I suspected it might be something like that, but was never sure. :) I'll keep those numbers handy.

I have had a bit of a problem trying to adjust the music around...

Essentially, I just want to switch Victoria_Late and Victoria_Middle around, but whenever I rename 'em and play 'em again, they're unchanged. ;_;

Am I doing something wrong?

Happy Holidays all,

I needed to clarify something about XP vs. animals and barbs. I do know the XP caps fighting them are 5 and 10, respectively. However, I am trying out a raging barbs game for fun and I am considering taking the rare step of building a barracks in my capital very early as a result. If a barracks gives +3XP to land units, does this raise the maximum that can be attained against early animals and barbs at 8XP and 13XP, respectively? Or, does the barracks only give you a "head start" towards the firmly placed caps of 5 and 10 XP?

Thanks for any answers,

Dalamb,

Yes, I know the boundaries between levels (2/5/10/etc.) don't change, but I was wondering if 5XP/10XP is the maximum a unit can earn fighting animals/barbs. If it depends on earned experience, it left open the question about a possible 8/13 XP limit in this case with a barracks.

First post! Yay!

I actually just got Civ IV (my first one!) recently and, to show you how much I LOVE it, I purchased BtS four days later. Yep.

Anyhow, I was just wondering what the hell Global Warming is (in Civ) and whether or not I should worry about it. If so, then, what should I do about it? Is it my fault? I hope not? Will Al Gore eat my soul?

Also, maybe I'm a little late in noticing this, but the "Civilization IV" logo on my desktop is "CIV" which I found pretty punny. Think about it... "CIV" obviously can stand for "civilization" but "IV" is also the Roman numeral for 4... get it? Civ 4... in ONE!

Okay, I'm finished. Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to CFC!

Global Warming begins when anybody launches a nuke or when a nuclear power plant blows up. Once it starts, there's nothing you can do to stop it. I believe that having less :yuck: in the world does slow it down though. Not 100% sure on that...

Took me much longer than 4 days. Pretty clever though isn't it

That's dumb then. Anyone should be able to launch nuclear missiles without considering the consequences. Isn't that how the real world works? EFF THIS GAME!

:D
