Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I'll vote never from time to time in order to defy a global civic. If I'm running a WE, I want to stay in bureaucracy and representation (or at least have those options open to me) for building spaceship parts/maintaining research with a low slider.

Hmm. I posted a question on the AP in the BtS forum, specifically asking about unhappiness from defiance.

So if I understand correctly, since votes can be as often as every 7 turns, and the unhappiness lasts 20 turns, you can never have no more than 15 ? This sort of fits my experience in my current game... I've had a city with 15 unhappies, but never for more than a few turns.

It seems to me that a second religion doesn't halve the unhappiness, it only reduces it by 5 (so 15 goes to 10 and 10 goes to 5), but I don't have a screenshot to back that up. I'll try to grab one the next time I defy *sigh*.

Not sure if this is where I should be asking but, hey I'm a Newbie. Straight to the point, can you get two AI Civs to like each other?
I don't think there's anything you can do other than to get them in each others favorite civics and/or the same religion if possible and bribe them both into a war vs. a third party. OB and trading, they're on their own.

Best option is to spread the same religion to them early on, so that they'll get a lot of diplomatic + points from being of the same faith. Of course, this works better for some leaders than others, because some leaders care more about religion than others (you know who you are, Isabella :p ).

Hmm... what patch and game version does Player 7 have? (He'll see this if he goes into the main menu and clicks "Advanced" then "About This Build".)
Latest BtS version, I am assuming (since we're playing Vanilla 1.74 and we all made sure we had that patch); but I'll find out. You don't happen to have an account on the xkcd forums, do you...? Would make all of this a hell of a lot easier. :p

edit: Someone told us to try the following, though.
Gyathaar tells me (and I have no way to verify it) that the change that's made by the 3.13 patch is to install a new version of CvGameCoreDLL.dll in the top level folder of your Civ4 software installation.

To revert your patched vanilla installation it should, therefore, be possible to delete this file and run the vanilla 1.74 patch installer to reinstate the old version of the DLL. This should then play the existing GOTM/WOTM/SGOTM games.

If you then want to run BtS 3.13 you will need to copy your reverted Civ4 installation and re-apply the BtS patch to the copy to create a dual installation.

Second religion? What do you mean with a second religion? 2 religions in a city, reduces this unhappiness???

Sorry, nope. I don't even know what xkcd is, to be honest. :p

Ah... yes, I remember now. It will be a lot easier though, rather than running older patch installers overtop of newer ones (which could potentially cause problems), for one of you with the "right" CvGameCoreDLL.dll to just send it to Player 7 via email or something. (It's only a few MB after all.)

Player 7 can then make a backup of his own CvGameCoreDLL.dll and replace it with the one he's downloaded. That way, if (when) he wants to revert his game back to the BTS version, all that he has to do is to replace the downloaded CvGameCoreDLL.dll with the one he's backed up. Far simpler (and safer) than messing around with patch installers. :)

Remember: Player 7 should be careful to ONLY change the CvGameCoreDLL.dll in the normal Civ4 folder. There are two different CvGameCoreDLL.dll files for both Warlords and BTS - make sure you're in the right folder before replacing them. And ALWAYS make a backup. ;)

Fair enough, I'll get one of the others to send it to him (my bandwidth is somewhat limited at present). Thanks so much!

Hello. I'm a newbie to Civilization. I have played a few games and I notice that the AI sometimes has small areas of the map under control without a city that I can see. Is there a way that I can control a resource without building a city? Is that what the AI is doing?

Welcome to civfanatics!

When this happens it means the AI has built a city. You'll often be able to tell where the city is because it'll be at the centre of the 3x3 square that just appeared (unless it was his capital city). If the centre of that square is still in the "fog of war" though, you won't be able to see the city.

Sometimes I'll just make a sign noting where the city is (use ALT+S to add signs to the map), and investigate it later.

Resources can only be used by you if they're inside your borders, have the correct improvement on them, and are connected up to your network. Connecting them up usually requires a road, but sometimes having it by a river will suffice if the river is connected to your roads. Usually the only way to gather a resource is to build a city near it. If your cities are too far away from it it might take too long for your cultural borders to spread and cover the resource, and in that time some other civilization might come and take it first anyway.

Feel free to ask more questions if you need further help. :goodjob:

Thanks for the praise. It's always good to know people are still reading and enjoying what I've written. :)

PieceOfMind has already provided the correct link to the all leader challenge games. Have fun reading them - I hope they help you to improve your game. ;)

Why can't I build Statue of Zeus?

I have Aesthetics and no one else has built it. But it won't appear in the build options for any of my cities.

You must have built at least 2 monuments before you can build the Statue of Zeus. It may be more for larger mapsizes but you can check this if you check the civilopedia from inside your game.
