Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can you replace the music with other files? How do you do that? I have some MP3's I'd like to listen to while I play. Thanks for any help!

I'd like to see this question answered, please.;)

When you've started a game, open the options screen (CTRL O), go to the audio tab and click the custom music folder option. Then tell the game where to find your custom music by browsing towards the correct location.

Why not just have your media player open and playing songs while you're inside Civ4? Simply go to "Options" in the menu while playing the game, go to the "Audio" tab and mute Civ4's music. Then you can freely listen to your own music. That's what I do anyway. I don't see the need for making your life more complicated by replacing the in-game songs. ;)

EDIT: Roland got to it first.

A few questions of my own: Can any Submarines see Stealth Destroyers, or is it only other Stealth Destroyers that can see Stealth Destroyers? (Are there any other units that can see them too?) Also, what are Stealth Destroyers useful for? (I can't see much point in getting them above regular Destroyers... a Stealth Transport I could see the use of, but a Stealth Destroyer?)

Stealth is a separate type of invisibility. They are invisible to anything but themselves.

What they're good for... Uhmm... Mjah... I could make up a reason. You could theoretically pillage some stuff without being seen if the other civilisation doesn't use them. It does take a lot of pillaging to earn back the investment of that ship. And usually when you have a unit that another civilisation can't build then you're more advanced and you just conquer them instead of pillaging them. But you could do that.

You can't secretly bombard city defences as they don't have a bombard ability. However, I must say, secretly bombarding something would be rather uhm weird. :crazyeye: They can't see submarines or shoot down planes like normal destroyers can. You could use them when an AI gets annoying with them. That's all, I guess.

Oh, wait, they might be able to secretly blockade a city. That's rather unbelievable I must say. Like 'something is out there and we don't dare to use that sea area anymore'. :crazyeye:

Oh, I know a good strong point for them: their survivability. When your stack of battleships, destroyers, stealth destroyers, fully loaded carriers and loaded transports is fully destroyed by the enemy bombers and battleships, then they will survive as the enemy can't see them and thus can't attack them. Isn't that great! :twitch:

Alright, this is probably going to sound a tad daft, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

When your city boundaries expand, you can start using resources farther away from your actual city square.
However, when I go into the city menu, I find that I can't get any on screen except the closest 3 (radius).
In other words, I can't *click* any further than 3 squares away, since I can't *see* them.

so.. how do I scroll over? o.O

You can only work tiles in your BFC, so those are the only ones for which the city screen shows you what's happening. I've sometimes been fooled by that, too; I recently got confused about why clicking on a farm in the 3rd ring closed my city screen!

If you want to examine tiles further out you need to use the regular map screen. You get "access" to resources outside your BFC when the border expands, meaning for example a copper mine OR A FORT ON COPPER in the 3rd ring lets you build axemen, but you can't work it for the extra hammers (until/unless some other city of yours has it in the BFC).

Is there a way to see an enemy's entire stack? It seems to be limited view.

Yes, when a stack of units is too large, then the first say 20 units are shown and the rest are shown in an abbreviated way. The ones that are abbreviated are also part of the stack and they share the set of promotions shown behind them but you don't know which one has which promotion exactly.

For me, it's not really a problem as when a stack is that large, the individual promotion of unit 43 isn't that interesting anymore. It's just a matter of creating lots of siege units and lots of normal units to defeat that stack.

You can't. A city can only use the tiles in the so called big fat cross (a 5*5 area minus the corners centred around the centre city square). When the area around a city expands further than that, then it just means that tiles in that area belong to your empire, but they aren't used by any city. Note however that special resources in that area that have been improved and are connected to your cities can offer their special benefits to your empire.

Welcome to civfanatics by the way!:band::beer:

Aah, I see.

Thank you kindly, Dalamb and Roland both.

Guess I'll start over, my city placement doesn't really make any sense anymore.

Free Saturday.. Guess I'll start out with an all-day marathon to get my feet wet in this game.

Thank you very much for the help.

edit : related question - Does that mean that by building roads to resources within the BFC (amidoinitright?) you can acces these before your "cultural" boundaries expand?

No resources need to be improved, connected and within your cultural borders to provide their bonuses to your empire.

Maybe in the wrong section to post this, sorry for that.

Is thera any way to get rid of the scoring number in the right down corner?
Playing with my two buddies would be more fun if we didnt know each others (and AI`s) score :)

do you want to see your score and nobody elses or no ones score including yours.

I want everybodys score to disappear. :)
But i would like the names to stay, for easy diplomacy interaction. ;)

Well, you can click on your name in the scoreboard to collapse the scoreboard and thus see only your own score. You'd still be able to access your diplomacy easily by pressing F4 and clicking on the leader pics.

Yes, that would be the easy solution. :)

When playing (multiplayer) it would be a little more fun, not to know how the buddies is faring. The one(s) with the least points tend to be.... uhm..... "poked in the rump" :mischief:
And its easy to just "accidently" look at the score.

I feel this might be more of a modding question perhaps, maybe i should find my way over to those "tricksters" corner... :D
(and pardons for me crappy grammar :p)

Checking out the Civilopedia, I guess they have 2 first strikes, which isn't too bad. The lack of any ability to detect submarines or shoot down planes makes them rather useless compared to regular Destroyers, though. Especially since they have the exact same strength as regular Destroyers.

I guess you could get the best use out of Stealth Destroyers by combining them with a stack of other units... but then, what's the point of them being stealth units if they have to tag along with a rather obvious stack? I guess we'll just have to write them off as a fairly pointless novelty unit for the late game. ;)

Oh, another question while I think of it: How useful are Guided Missiles? I just realised that I've never actually used them in Civ4! I used to use them in Civ3 all the time, but I haven't seen reason to do so in Civ4 yet. Are they particularly useful in any situations? Seems to me that a few Bombers would be more useful than a stack of Cruise Missiles, but I might be wrong...

I have a quick question, In BTS is there any way to turn off that pop-up that comes on after a city is done creating a unit or building? It wont let me skip it and i don't need 20 workers or warriors at a time at the beginning of the game.

Erm... not directly, but why would you want to turn it off? This is the pop-up that prompts you to choose what you want to build next. If you don't build things, you won't advance in the game very fast. ;)

One work-around is to set up queues for your cities, so they'll take longer before asking you what to do next. To set up a queue, double click a city, then hold shift while clicking (in order) what you want that city to build next.

Just a warning though, this is often not a good idea early in the game, because you'll be getting new buildings/units made available fairly quickly. So build queues will hold you up from being able to build that important building or unit that you've just obtained.

Wohoo! thats exactly what i meant, but much better wording, :P thanks @ ori.

I got another one, when building a large army, i prefer to set a rally point on the map,
is there a way to have all the units go to sleep/fortify automatically when they have reached their destination.
