Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks Ori :D

Keeping the questions rolling, here's another: Does gifting other civs with one or more units get me a diplo bonus?

What exactly is the difference between barbs and regular Civs, other than the city names? (I usually play no barbs just wondering.)

Thanks for quick answers.

Is it possible to hide units from the AI's sight? Does forest or jungle hide units? Do cities?

No. If he has line of sight on a tile, he can see what's there (save for spies). If he doesn't have open borders, however, then he can't see more than one (or two, with a hill) tiles into your empire.

*The exception is through espionage/spies. If he accumulates too much EP on you ,he can see everything.

My noob question of the day:

What exactly is the first strike conferred upon a unit from the drill promotion? Does it operate whether you attack or defend? (Looks like it's big with defensive units: Arch/Machine Gunners.) Rolling over the combat mechs in the buffy mod does bad things to my brain, but is there a simple explanation?

Finally, when is it a reccomended choice?

a first strike is a round of combat during which only the unit that has the first strike can cause damage. This means that that unit (regardless of attack or defense) will cause damage to the opponent if it wins that round of combat - and will not be damaged if it looses.

Sorry, I had loaded the game with the BUG mod and it has the columns ordered differently. In your case, it's city upkeep rounded down to the nearest integer for the red circle and number of military units in the city for the black castle.

 Wow.. Thank you

If a friendly civ (you have open borders to him) is about to settle on a piece of land that you have closed off to everyone else (I had plans to settle there in the future)
and is the only location available for settling ANYWHERE (no cultural boundaries controlling the area yet) then you settle on that piece of land before he does, will you receive some sort of malus?
It may not be visible like the ones seen "-6you have declared war" "-3fallen under the sway of a heathen religion" but something that the AI considers anyway

Finally, when is it a reccomended choice?

I think people use it when the Unit with the drill promotion/s can ordinarily win combat 1on1, but is facing multiple units

that way, when it successfully defends with Drill, it will not be wounded for the next attacker in the stack, and still fresh for the next attacker (if it defends successfully again)

Longbowman Drill III, on Hill, city defense not bombarded, across river
vs 8 axemen

there is no diplo modifier for such a situation.

Thanks for the quick answer :D
I was doubtful if AIs considered it, but I had to be sure. It's my first Immortal game :D

It's a good choice when the unit with first strikes will win the battle easily. In that case, the first strike rounds can result in an (almost) dead opposing unit meaning that the unit with first strikes is barely wounded by the battle. In this way, the unit can win multiple battles in one turn or can be used in a blitzkrieg where these units don't have to heal between battles.

Examples:

1) Longbowmen (or other primary defenders) in a city with high defence modifiers on a hill with lots of first strikes. The unit can defeat multiple attackers while barely losing hitpoints by the battles and thus barely being weakened by subsequent battles. The drill promotions also help against collateral damage effects of siege units.

2) Modern armor (or other main attackers with the option of first strikes) attacking inferior obsolete units or units that have been subjected to extreme bombardment by (stealth) bombers. The modern armor can win such battles without losing hitpoints due to the free first strike rounds and thus can quickly move from city to city without healing.

The "first strike" abilities come with the "Drill" promotions.
"Drill" also offer the "reduce colleral damage" ability. Does it not make sense to promote the first attack stack with "Drill" promotions to ease the siege weapon attack which will inevitably take place AND have the advantage of Frist strikes ?
(and do not forget Anti mounted unit units because flanking promoted mounted units can completly negate the First Strike ability)

the begginers question:
could someone tell me how play by email,Idont know how to set up with other guys

Interesting idea. I echo what others say - drill is good for STRONG units where the first strike is likely to hit to defeat a bunch of weak units. Using it to help against the large catapult stack may be a good idea. Using for units to get first strike in these cases can also help.

Best wishes,

HI,

Longtime lurker, firstime poster

Is there a way to permanently change the player details in BtS? I have my own peculiar adjective and short description that I like to see in print, and am sick of deleting [default] and typing them in.

Not that I'm aware of, unfortunately. Although I'd certainly be very interested in hearing if anyone has figured out how to do this, since storing this information is something I'd quite like to do myself.
