Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

So here's a quick question I have.

I noticed under "custom game" there's a long list of options unchecked.
Do you guys usually just leave them all unchecked, or do you check some of them,
and if so, which ones?

Depends on the game I'm playing but I always check something. For a military heavy game I like raging barbarians and aggresive AI. On huge maps I like advanced start just to get past those few turns of clicking end turn. Sometimes I just mix it up with random events, unrestricted leaders, choose relegions etc.

Thank you for all the replys.
Actually I play on a laptop with low resolutions, so this has to be to problem.
Ok, it's no the end of the world :)

The picture I've posted is about a game played with the BAT mod 2.0 (which includes BUG 4.0)

Well that's a highly subjective matter. I like choose religions, no tech brokering (can't retrade techs) and pretty much leave everything else as it is. Many likes to disable random events and espionage, the former because they are random and skill has nothing to do with it, and the latter because people are not used to it and doesen't like it.

Hmm, thanks for the insight.

That sounds like a good idea, thanks for the advice.

CBPE, I've had that problem before while playing on my laptop. ie. low resolution -> sometimes the list of units in a big stack spills off the top of the screen.

The best you can do is to minimize the interface

Am I bound by Apostolic Council resolutions if I'm of a different religion than the one that owns the Palace?

Palace owner religion does not matter in the slightest - what matters is the "AP religion" = the religion the AP builder had when it was built.

And yes, you are always bound by the resolutions, only effect of having a different religion than the AP one is that your votes are halved. Defying only affects the cities that have the AP religion, though, so if you just have 1 then you can defy to no end pretty much. That's very dangerous wrt AI diplo victories though since diplo win votes can't be defied.

Hey, after a couple of years w.out Civ, I want to return to the game. I want to but the complete edition, ie the one without Revolution but including both expansions. The two expansions were cumulative, they ad to the original game, right? Revolution is however a whole different game, so doesn't ad to the original game?

Correct, the complete edition contains the fully expanded version of Civ4 and
the separately released game "Colonization" as well.

Civilization Revolution is a separate multi-platform game for the Xbox 360, Ps3 and the DS.

Should you always attack with a military tech advantage? Will you almost always fail trying to attack with standard units? I know this entirely depends on the scenario, but please answer in a general sence. :)

The response is "it depend entirely on the game". You can't have this kind of general advice, especially since you can win a war with 2 entire era behind your opponent, and conversely loose with rifleman against maceman.

You should always try to attack with a military advantage. What your military advantage is, is dependant on the game. Against a higher tech military you may have to draw a stack in to the open, clobber it with collateral damage seige then wipe it out. Mobility and pillaging may be your best option. With a weak military your advantage may come from bringing other powers into the war. Getting a civ between you and your opponent to close borders with your enemy could be your advantage. Having a military tech advantage is just one way to gain the high ground.

Recently I was playing a Civ IV Beyond the Sword game, and near the end, saw that almost all of my cities had significant unhappiness. When I examined further, the explanation was that "The world considers you a villain" (or some such similar text).

I had recently selected "Defy Resolution" when asked for my vote on global Environmentalism as a civic. Are these two events linked? What are the details associated with defying a global civil resolution?

Thank you for your help,

-djl-

Defying a motio, any motion, make a -5 happiness penalty on all your city, and some other technical penalty.

It expire eventually, but if you defy again, then the penalty stack and duration is refreshed, AFAIK. AIs can starve theirs city to size 1 by stubbornly defying resolution.

If uit's AP resolution and not ON one, then only city with the AP religion will have the happiness penalty.

You don't actually get unhappiness in all of your cities for defying a resolution that would have otherwise passed, just a handful of them.

Does anyone know what the formula is for that? It seems that the biggest and oldest (and most productive) cities are the main ones targeted by the defiance unhappiness.

Actually, here is an odd one that just happened in my current game. I was UN Prez, and I called for two resolutions that would have awarded me one of my neighbor's cities. He defied both resolutions for +10  . The third time he just voted No, and I was awarded the city. However, I inherited the +10  . What'd I do? Why does the world think I'm a villain? :mischief: This just a screwy mechanic, or what?

Is there a way to right click on an enemy unit, get the percentage odds of combat and NOT attack?
F
Sure.

  1. Select your attacker, hold down the ALT key, and point to the enemy unit (do NOT click on it).
  2. Select your attacker and right drag to the enemy unit, keeping the mouse button down; right-drag back or press ESC if you don't like the odds.
