Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

RJ thanks for help..

also, uhh, not sure about in Finland, but I really don't think 'what the hell' qualifies as swearing... at least not in the way he used it..

quick question - why in BTS expansion does the world think I'm a villian?
You defied a resolution from the Apostolic Palace or UN that otherwise would have passed. This results in several turns of about 5  citizens in several of your cities. The way to avoid it is to have enough votes so that simply voting "no" will do the trick (or even better, have enough votes so you become the AP resident or Sec-Gen and you get to choose the resolutions).

Could you please cut back on the swearing a little. :)

Sorry I didn't even know hell was considered swearing, I'll cut it out. I didn't exactly post a profanity laden paragraph or anything, but sorry still.

What happened was I had my capitol, it was working three mines, and I built another city 3 down right from the mines, and the new city ate the mines from my capitol. That was a loss of 12+ hammers and 3 food instantly for my capitol, and made it into a completely worthless city. I couldn't manage to get the tiles back to my capitol, even when I unworked them with the new city. They completely "belonged" to the new city, and it made my entire game a moot point and ruined it all. Game needs a feature to raze or destroy your own cities...

As RJ already said, if a tile could belong to multiple cities, you can decide which one gets it simply by clicking the tile in the city you want it to belong to. Go to that capital and click on the "greyed" out mine tiles to regain them.

Hello :)

I've just been looking through this thread by "Ignorant Teacher", and I noticed something in some of the screenshots that I haven't seen before.

Spoiler :
09.jpg

In this photo (I hope its okay that I use it), there are two "templates" for city placement, showing where the city and it's Fat Cross will be.

How exactly is this done? I've been using the Alt+S option thingy (I think its that) to mark individual tiles. Putting templates down would be incredibly useful for me.

BUG Mod ... vastly usefull mod (and proberly mentioned two or three time a page in this thread :P)

That's a feature of the BUG Mod. Alt+X to enter the "templating" mode (and before you ask, the templates are removed with a rclick :) ) and Ctrl+X to enable showing them IIRC.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Thats good to know. I'm already using BUG 4.2 and BULL 1.0. I was hoping it wasn't some other mod that could cause a conflict.

Thanks again. :)

how does bombarding work with Catapults?

I've got a big stack of Germans next to one of my cities. I've got Catapults in the area... but, is the only way to attack with them, to actually just attack the stack?

in Civ3 the catapults could fire from a square away? also, the Germans are bombarding my city with their catapults, so why can't I bombard back?

also, if the Germans attack the city, will the catapults then fire automatically like they did in Civ3?

There are two different things you are thinking of:

1.) Bombardment: Bombardment is only when a you soften the cultural defences of a city. The actual units are not damaged. It's just their :strength: is multiplied by the cultural defence of the city. Example; A warrior defending a 100% Cultural Defence city will multiply the strength of the defender accordingly. So, 2 :strength: X 100% is 4 strength. And let's say that you bombarded the city down to 50%. The warrior would defend on a 3 because 50% + 2 = 3. Get it?

2.) Collateral Damage: Is the % value of the damage put on one unit that inflicts other units of the stack. So, a unit with 10% Collateral Damage attack a stack of 10 Archers inflicts 6 units with its own 10%... Archers have 3 :strength:. - 10% = 2.70 :stregth: inflicted on six units on the same stack would be the result for the rest. You can continually inflict Collateral Damage until the unit(s) can take no more and are at absolute lowest health.

I know my examples are not that great but I hope that explains it. I had the same question a while back. I have a thread labelled "Collateral Damage" you could peek into it if you want.

so, in other words, the only time a 'bombardment' option becomes available is when my Catapult is next to an enemy city.

and, to use the catapult in any other situation, I just have to attack with it like a normal unit.

is that correct?

^Yes. Attacking with a catapult the normal way will automatically cause collateral damage.

It also shows how many units have been inflicted in the message log. :)

You'll have to browse the BUG mod subforum and its download section. IIRC, they still keep the older versions available, but why don't you upgrade to the next patch?

Of course, the older versions miss quite a lot of features. A lot has happened with the BUG Mod since patch 3.19.

if the enemy attacks my stack/city with a catapult, will it automatically fire at that point?

like, if I know a big attack is coming, should I expend my catapults in an attack on the turn previous? or are will they fire automatically on defense?

There is no defensive bombard in Civ4. If the cat is selected as the defender, it will fight back.

...and will only damage the unit attacking it. So yes, jUmpSt0p, you should throw some catapults at the enemy stack on the turn before you expect it to attack your city. I've noticed that the AI will bombard away city defenses, but not all the way to 0% all the time, so don't expect them to do that like a human player would; the AI plays the odds.

In addition, if you have enough units and can do enough collateral damage with your cats, attack the stack with your own units. Non-defensive units like mounted are great for this, especially since (a) they can damage or even kill siege units through flanking attacks, (b) with Flanking promotions some of them will probably survive low-odds battles will meting out damage, and (c) since most mounted units can't fortify or benefit from defensive bonuses, you're better off attacking with them rather than defending anyway.
