Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Will the game be slower if every turn its gonna save? Im talking about later on the game when it goes slowly anyway...

Saving the game doesn't take a lot of time relative to the inter turn times. It shouldn't be an issue.

I had my first game next to the Zulus in close proximity to the Zulus and found it very frustrating. I know everyone says take them out early, but how early? Mass warrior rush? My game turned into a grind with him losing units, but wounding mine enough that I couldn't really take advantage. Very frustrating.

Build enough military to not look like a juicy target (and to be able to smite any stacks that might enter your territory) and distract them through diplomacy (join in on some phoney wars, give in to demands for tribute, etc). Concentrate on building up your production and commerce to the point where you have an advantage in tech and ability to produce superior units. Then let him have it. If you're new, I assume you're playing on the lower difficulty levels, and this really shouldn't be that tough to accomplish.

Happy Civing. :)

How do I enter a permanent alliance?
How do I release cities into a colony?
Will the AI always know when I've traded with it's worst enemy?
Do all civs have to have the AP religion present in order to propose diplomatic victory?
Does creating forest preserves have any effect on the severity of global warming events?
Is there a way to determine where a particular wonder is located if it's not on the greatest cities list?
Can I still found corporations while in state property?

Having a strong power rating compared to the nut jobs (Shaka, Montezuma, Genghis) often does you no good whatsoever. These are civs that I've seen declare war on me when I have rifles to counter their macemen and horse archers and a power rating 3 times theirs.

That being said, having a decent military will not stave off an attack from the psychos, but it will smack them down when they do declare war.

But getting back to Tancread's original query--just about every unit in this game has a counter unit designed to have good or even great odds against it. For Shaka's Impis, it's Axemen, with their automatic +50% anti-melee bonus (+75% with Shock, plus Combat 1's 10% on top of that). Granted, Impis move faster, but in your own territory with enough roads, Axemen will be on even terms with them in that regard.

So in a nutshell, to deal with Shaka, research Bronze Working, find and settle next to a source of copper, and build Axemen by chopping forests and using slavery. In the meantime, be as nice to him as possible--give in to his demands, adopt his religion, etc. Once you have a sufficient-sized army, crush him. Have a look at my Early Rush guide--link in my sig--for more details. :D

How do I enter a permanent alliance?
IIRC, you have to (a) enable PAs in the custom game options and (b) discover Communism. I've never used them, though, so I could be wrong.
How do I release cities into a colony?
Use the city list (F1), select one of the cities, and click the "raised fist" icon at bottom right. You'll get a dialog box with options, one of which is to grant this and other cities on the same landmass their independence (Note that: the cities must be on a separate landmass to the one where your capital is located.)
Will the AI always know when I've traded with it's worst enemy?
In my experience, yes.
Do all civs have to have the AP religion present in order to propose diplomatic victory?
Yes.
Does creating forest preserves have any effect on the severity of global warming events?
Nope.
Is there a way to determine where a particular wonder is located if it's not on the greatest cities list?
Run the BUG mod. Or send a lot of Caravels and Explorers out.
Can I still found corporations while in state property?
As I recall, no you can't.

Thanks BestBrian and Sisiutil, it looks like the answer should have been to just let him grind himself out against me. His attacks were losing him tons of people, but it felt like I couldn't wear him out or counter punch effectively. I was in excellent defensive positions, guess I wasn't patient enough. I may restart it from an early save and ax rush him and see if I can pull it off. I hadn't seen the Early Rush guide, that is giving me some ideas.

Go into CivilizationIV.ini file and set AutoSaveInterval to 1. This will autosave every turn. (You may want to increase the MaxAutoSaves as well if you like going back and trying different strategies.)

With so much micromanagement to perform in this game, mistakes will be made. Sometimes I just live with them, but sometimes a stray mouse click causes a huge blunder, such as sending a treasured and highly-promoted unit away from the rest of the stack onto a tile where it can be easily killed. Having every turn auto-saved is a quick and easy remedy for such situations.

Man I heard that. I try to live with it too for the most part. But there are those times...

Are there any other differences between the civs and the leaders besdie traits,UU,UB?

I see people in this forum talk about good/bad civ/leaders and it seems to me that there is more than the information that the game gives you on the choosing leader screen. They seem to talk about who's the best/worst leader beyond the regular game's info.

Am i right about it? or i have just figured it out wrong?

Leaders have unique personalities and favourite civics that can influence how they behave towards you and other leaders. However, these qualities have no effect on how a particular leader plays when you choose that leader.

In some cases particular combinations of traits, UU, and UB can make a leader a particularly good choice (e.g. Aggressive and a good early UU).

Ok, I am missing something so I have another newbie question. To load some of the challenges here it says to us a mod, does this mean the save game files are not in the standard format for the game? Why do I need a mod if the save file is a standard game?

How can i know the unique personalities and what infulence a specific leader?
Is it possible to know that?

Somewhere on Civfanatics, there is a thread with a table showing personalities:
- who will declare war at what diplomatic state
- build unit probability
- warmonger/peacemonger respect
- favourite civics
etc.

I don't have the link, maybe someone else can help you out.

Two questions:

1/ Hath not the potter power over the clay to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour?

2/ How worthwhile is it to open borders early in the game if I'm not using missionaries to spread religion? I understand that it's a no-no if you've blocked off areas for later expansion, but I generally decline all offers of Open Borders until at least the Renaissance era because I am perhaps overly wary of being given an ultimatum to cancel my deals and the subsequent negative "You stopped trading with us" and "You refused to stop trading with our worst enemies" diplomatic modifiers. I'm suspecting that I should be choosing my friends and allies earlier in the game than I do now. Also, do those modifiers go away after time?

PS Sisiutil, I'm sure I speak for many people when I say that the time and effort you put into helping us lesser players on this thread and elsewhere is massively appreciated. I have learned so, so much from reading your posts.

You're throwing money in the garbage every turn if you don't OB at all. Foreign trade routes give much better yields than domestic ones. In addition, OB means free diplo up to +2 in some turns. Both of these bonuses are huge in the early-mid game.

If you have a complete land block around an unsettled area, AIs will not send settlers through your territory even if you open borders. They will however send them in boats but by then you've hopefully already settled the area (also you can cancel the OB without a diplo penalty if you see a suspicious Galley incoming).

So it's a bad idea to not open any borders. As you said you need to keep an eye of who's whose worst enemy and if you can't afford to piss off the hater, cancel OB with the one he hates until the hater stops hating your trading buddy. :) If you can't be bothered to micro that much, select friends and OB to them and refuse to cancel them. Though actually the penalty for stopping trading isn't that hefty either, the worst thing about that is that the offended party won't talk to you for a hundred turns sometimes (depends on leader personality).

If im the first one to find a religion and later on it spreads to other 2 civs that close to me, how does it help me if their leaders and cities converts to my religion? do i get any benefit from it at all?

Mucho benefits. You'll receive a diplo bonus for being of the same faith, they'll actively spread your religion, and once you use a prophet to build the shrine of that religion you'll receive lots of cash.

Ok, I am missing something so I have another newbie question. To load some of the challenges here it says to us a mod, does this mean the save game files are not in the standard format for the game? Why do I need a mod if the save file is a standard game?
Because they're not a standard game. A mod can either be incorporated into your regular Civ install so it's always loaded along with the game or it can be a separate install you have to purposely load. Some mods do not change gameplay elements (such as the BUG mod) and, therefore, if loaded with the regular game, their saves can be loaded by a standard Civ install. However, may mods (such as Fall from Heaven) substantially change gameplay elements, so the mod must be loaded in order to load the save.
How can i know the unique personalities and what infulence a specific leader?
Is it possible to know that?
Yes. Anion's excellent reference guide gives very specific breakdowns, culled directly from the game's XML, on the leaders' personalities. I highly recommend it.

Thank you, and you're welcome.
